The qualified immunity doctrine was established to shield government officials from accountability when they violate people’s rights. The doctrine’s stated purpose is to help government officials do their jobs more efficiently, but its main effect has been to make it easier for government officials — from police officers to college administrators— to violate people’s constitutional rights with impunity. Since its adoption, qualified immunity has essentially nullified accountability for government officials— even for indisputable constitutional violations or egregious acts like murder. Too often, this leaves citizens hopelessly deprived of any chance for accountability or recourse. But isn’t the whole point of the First Amendment to limit what the government can do to the people? And when courts grant immunity to government officials who violate the First Amendment, what’s left to deter them from continued abuse of power? The bottom line is that qualified immunity threatens everyone’s expressive freedoms. If it’s not reformed soon, the dangerous doctrine will further undermine our First Amendment rights, leaving the people with no remedy for the abuse of power the Bill of Rights was meant to protect us from. According to The Washington Post’s polling average, neither Vice President Kamala Harris nor former president Donald Trump is currently clearly favored in enough states to get to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. Harris is ahead in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Nevada, while Trump leads in Georgia and Arizona. North Carolina is tied. But with the help of our polling averages, we’ve identified five likely paths to the White House based on Harris and Trump’s standing in the polls. We’ve also identified three less likely paths, including a tie in the electoral college.

President Claudia Sheinbaum’s remarks regarding President Donald Trump’s tariff threat were phrased with more than a little defiance, yet the details underscore a willingness to work on the core issues of immigration and trafficking. ***** Her remarks underscored growing tensions as Trump plans to tighten immigration policies and impose a 25 percent tariff on Mexican imports. Trump declared that the tariffs would remain in place "until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!" "Caravans of migrants no longer reach the border," Sheinbaum said on Tuesday while presenting a letter she plans to send to Trump in the coming days. She also emphasized Mexico's efforts to curb the flow of drugs, including the synthetic opioid fentanyl, while noting that it remains "a public health and consumption problem within your country's society." ***** https://lnkd.in/gA_TVJ9R It is tempting to ascribe her assurances that migrant caravans are going to stop traversing Mexico to get to the US southern border as a response to the pressure of a threatened 25% tariff on Mexican goods. Regardless of the reasons why, if Mexico is willing to take steps to curtail illegal migrants from reaching the US southern border, then Mexico is to be encouraged to continue with such steps and to do more. The tariff stick is always going to be much more effective if accompanied by a carrot of some sort. Balancing the carrots and the sticks is the stuff of modern diplomacy. A relationship with Mexico which constructively addresses the security of the Southern border is always going to be preferable over tariffs alone. Will President Trump get such a relationship? We shall soon find out.
