My mentor, Lydia Liu, a revered leader in global insights and analytics transformation, has profoundly impacted my development. Leveraging her knowledge and experience, Lydia provides insightful guidance on navigating UCB's networks and addressing challenges and opportunities I encounter.

Lydia's mentorship doesn't solely solve my problems but provokes thought and enhances decision-making abilities. This mentor-mentee relationship isn't one-sided; we exchange views, ideas, and experiences fostering a strong learning environment.

Operating outside my immediate team and reporting line, this relationship encourages confidentiality and offers fresh perspectives, unshackled by my routine work environment.

Our relationship focuses on authenticity. We understand each other, sharing successes and failures alike. We celebrate accomplishments yet remain humble and open to learning. Trust forms our interaction's foundation, echoing GuideMe's welcoming and non-judgmental environment.

Navigating early career growth, Lydia's mentorship, and the GuideMe community have become my compass, guiding me towards my goals. Our journey may not be clear-cut, but the discovery and growth have been transformative.

GuideMe mentorship is a journey of professional growth, a collaborative exchange of experiences, ideas, and lessons, extending beyond our roles. I invite you to follow this journey as we cultivate an environment ripe with growth, exploration, and mutual learning at UCB.

In the digital age, the confluence of AI (artificial intelligence), NFTs (non-fungible tokens), and the Metaverse presents multifaceted challenges and opportunities for GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) institutions. This research provides an academically rigorous exploration of this complex interplay, guided by the central question: “How do GLAM institutions address the ethical implications of adopting AI-generated NFTs, and what strategies can be employed to ensure the preservation and authenticity of cultural heritage in the digital realm?”

The Literature Review lays the foundation, examining the evolution of NFTs, AI's transformative potential in digital art, and the challenges within GLAM institutions. It emphasizes ethical considerations in preserving cultural heritage in AI-generated NFTs.

The research employs qualitative methodology, anchored by three emblematic case studies: Italy's Uffizi Gallery Incident, British Museum's collaboration with the Sandbox Metaverse, and Vatican's NFT Gallery Initiative. These case studies illuminate legal ramifications, strategic collaborations, and the alignment of technology with institutional values.

The analysis delves into ethical implications, covering ownership, authenticity, economic impacts, environmental concerns, legal issues, and stakeholder responsibilities. A comprehensive strategy for GLAM institutions provides guidance on technical requirements, AI-driven digitization, NFT creation, and Metaverse integration.

The Digital Age has offered various possibilities for how we can enhance our daily lives with digital technologies. Even though it seems a given for many of us, there are still people who do not enjoy this benefit. One of the “offline” countries, where these people come from, is Afghanistan. Many circumstances suppress the evolution of digitalisation. The first is “the endless war.” One of my Afghan students mentioned that whenever the telecommunication company built a satellite or any other component to deliver signal or internet connection in the city, the Taliban bombed it immediately because people could get easier access to education and information. The second is female illiteracy. The majority of my Afghan students to whom I taught English were illiterate women who could not read and write. Therefore, even if the telecommunication company were able to successfully build infrastructure, the digital gender gap would be immense, and the majority of men would not allow women to possess any digital device. The third is religion. The Internet provides us with the freedom of expression worldwide. However, there still persist obstacles to the Internet in the Afghan constitution, particularly article 3: “no law shall contravene the tenets and provisions of the holy religion of Islam in Afghanistan” (Afghan Embassy, 2004). Therefore, social media platforms are censored in most cases.

The interrelation between telework and the COVID-19 pandemic has offered a completely new insight into the traditional organisation of work and led to the development of the phenomenon referred to as the ‘new normal.’ By focusing on the EU workforce, this thesis investigates how TICTM (Telework and Information and Communication Technology-based Mobile Work) has shaped their behaviour during COVID-19 from the point of view of European trade unions. This research contributes to the existing literature by arguing that the preparedness of individual member states played a crucial role in workers’ trust in national government and the extent to which the European workforce was able to benefit from the TICTM during a chaotic, precarious and unpredictable period. A semi-quantitative approach was adopted using the constructivist grounded theory methodology to explore workers' experiences with TICTM, generating a model of TICTM factors shaping their behaviour based on participant’s accounts. Eleven virtual interviews were conducted with European trade unionists, one e-mail interview with the European Trade Union Confederation’s representative and sixty-five responses were obtained via survey. The model developed three theoretical codes: adaptation to the new normal, moral uncertainty, and digital movement.

Transnational studies and the term transnational diaspora offer new insight into the interrelation between a specific minority ethnic group and the Internet. By focusing on Afghan refugees, this thesis investigates how the Internet shapes their behaviour both during the migration journey and upon arrival in the destination country, the United Kingdom. Although the engagement with the Internet was examined only after the accommodation in the host country, three causes of cyberspace isolation throughout a migration journey were investigated: financial issues, limited access, and unplanned migration. This research contributes to the existing literature by arguing that the occurrence of immoral content on social media has played a crucial role in the utilisation of the Internet and that the motivation of having a modern lifestyle weakens the potent cultural bond. A qualitative approach was adopted, using the constructivist grounded theory methodology to explore Afghan refugees’ experiences with the Internet and generating a model of Internet factors shaping refugees’ behaviour based on participant’s accounts. Fifteen interviews were conducted with refugees in London and two virtual interviews were conducted with organisational representatives. The model developed three theoretical codes: utilisation of the Internet, moral uncertainty, and behavioural factors. This study developed a substantive theory contributing to diaspora and transnational studies.

It explored the following 'big' questions: What does development mean? Why are some countries poor, repressive, and violent? How does globalisation influence development in sub-Saharan Africa? How do historical institutions influence development in sub-Saharan Africa? To what extent does gender equality, urbanisation, and corruption influence development in sub-Saharan African, and vice versa?
