🚀 EBA Takes Crypto Seriously with New Technical Standards The European Banking Authority (EBA) has released a comprehensive set of technical standards under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR). European crypto regulation MiCA went in to effect as of 1st of July. Circle announced their stablecoins USDC and EURC are MiCA compliant. The interesting part is that they also have an e-money licence from France. Watch this space for emergence of crypto payments innovation in Europe. Today, let's break down two fundamental ones: On-Chain and Off-Chain Transactions. Think of on-chain transactions like a bank transaction that’s officially recorded in your bank statement, while off-chain transactions are like handing someone cash directly; it’s quicker and doesn't appear on your bank record. ⚡️On-chain transactions occur on the blockchain itself. Every transaction is recorded on a public ledger, after being verified by participants in the network (like miners or validators). Everyone can check these transactions using publicly available tools like Blockmate AML Explorer (https://lnkd.in/ehQ66YjF). ⚡️Off-chain transactions happen outside the blockchain. 🚀 Czech’s No.1 in Digital Assets 🚀 The Prague’s Central Securities Depository (CDCP) has become the world's first institution to receive authorization to operate a DLT-based settlement system under the European DLT Pilot Regime, granted by the Czech National Bank and notified by ESMA. Starting from November 18, 2024, CDCP will offer issuers the ability to register their securities using this cutting-edge technology. What does this mean for the market? This platform opens new avenues for financing SMEs through bond or stock subscriptions without intermediaries. It also adds value for companies offering Employee Stock Ownership Programs (ESOP) and creates enormous opportunities for fintech firms like crowdfunding platforms to directly connect and provide additional securities services. With DLT, securities accounts can be easily managed, and shares or bonds can be credited or transferred seamlessly. Transactions can be settled with or without monetary payment, depending on agreements with the counterparty. Anyone can open an account simply via BankID and access it through a web or mobile app available on www.cdcp.cz. Omnify was launched by ACABES for Technology, the technology provider for Arab Bank, as its first application programming platform designed for banking-as-a-service with key features: KYC, Accounts and virtual IBAN-enabling wallets, and payments, Customisable virtual and physical cards-as-a-service and Loyalty engines ⚡️ Payments Winner: Santander with PagoNxt Payments Hub Platform PagoNxt Payments, part of the Santander Group, developed the Payments Hub, a global technology platform designed to streamline account-to-account (A2A) payments for financial institutions. Connecting regional payment schemes across Europe and the Americas, such as SEPA, Faster Payments, PIX, and SWIFT it serves both Santander and the broader market. It processed over 1 billion transactions annually across four regions, significantly reducing transaction costs through a software-as-a-service model and decommissioning legacy systems. #innovation

Do you remember that 5 years ago, on September 14, 2019, the first #PIS transactions were carried out under #PSD2 using APIs prepared by banks? Hooray! 🎉 #OpenBanking in Europe was supposed to change the game, but let’s be honest—it’s stuck. Everyone’s still hoping PSD2 or the upcoming PSD3 will work some magic. The truth? It won’t. This regulation isn’t beneficial for banks because they don’t earn additional revenue from it; they’re just helping to grow their competitors. And when things finally start to improve, the big companies will take over again. Look at Visa. They’re launching a new service that lets you pay directly from your bank account, skipping credit cards. This sounds great, but it’s also a way for big players to maintain their grip on the market. Here’s what Visa’s new account-to-account payment service will do: ✅ Easier payments: You can set up direct debits on shopping sites with just a few clicks. ✅ More control: You can closely monitor your payments and reverse any incorrect charges. ✅ Future plans: It starts in the UK in 2025 and will expand to other parts of Europe later. Even though Visa says this will offer more control and security, it’s just another way for them to stay on top. They’re not here to save us (the consumers); they’re here to ensure they remain the leaders. I won’t go over all the problems Europe faced while implementing PSD2—there were plenty, and many still remain. But let’s consider what we could do differently in the future to avoid making the same mistakes and ending up with a less competitive market dominated by a few big players, leaving no room for innovation. ✴ Stricter, unified regulation: The rules should be stricter, without allowing for national-level deviations. PIS in Poland should function the same way as in Portugal, with no local variations in implementation. ✴ Technical requirements should be part of the regulation: When legal and technical aspects are separated, we end up with a "zoo" of different APIs, which definitely doesn’t improve efficiency. A unified approach to both legal and technical standards is essential. ✴ Legacy systems must not be overlooked: While focusing on innovation, we shouldn’t forget legacy systems. If PSD2 had come with the requirement for all banks to implement Instant Payments, it would have been a completely different story. Agree? ✴ Pricing remains an open question: 💶 What should be done about pricing, especially for payments made via PIS? 💶 While PIS pricing became very attractive for merchants due to competition, what about the costs of bank transfers made through PIS for customers? 💳 It doesn’t seem logical or fair that PIS with Instant Payments in Lithuania is free, while in Spain a user pays up to 2 EUR, especially when card payments are free for consumers everywhere. Maybe PSD2 was meant to save banks? 🤔 Do you remember when PSD2 and open banking became mandatory in the EU in 2018? In the years prior and afterwards, many banks complained as they were forced to offer 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦 access to third parties putting their own customer frontend at risk of losing relevance. Many banks built sub-ideal APIs, often with poor connectivity and in same cases even missing data fields. If customers cannot use third party services properly, maybe these third party services just go away and customers return to the bank-own frontends? But guess what, these third party services and PSD2 exists because of customer demand.  Banks can limit the performance of their 𝘰𝘸𝘯 APIs but cannot change customer demands. With embedded finance and the fintech development in general, we are seeing an ongoing rise of infrastructure providers. Building, designing and launching financial services will become easier and easier. Customers have more choices than ever. And if banks are not addressing their customer needs, others will. Many banks fought the implementation of PSD2. But I feel, they should be thankful for the open banking regulation, because it forced them to leave their silo and interact with customers, fintech companies and non-financial brands. It was just a first step but maybe an important one for (some) banks to understand how they can continue to grow? What do you think?
