As part of the Belgian Council Presidency, Minister Tinne Van der Straeten invited leading industry representatives together with the DGs of the 27 national energy ministries of the Member States to Bruges yesterday, where we discussed the next steps in advancing sustainable #energy #infrastructure, facilitating the international #Hydrogen trade and delivering #offshore renewable energy to all. Electricity grids form the foundation for clean energy transition and a well-functioning modern society. It is important that the regulatory framework supports cost-efficient anticipatory investments in electricity network as well as the development and utilization of flexibility. It is great to see that there are actions on EU level to resolve this challenge.

Some in Belgium want to go for 8GW of new/extended nukes... To do what? We have already regularly negative prices and more RES will be connected. Why not going for a real pan-European supply policy (as we are supposed to do...) with more flexibility, more interconnectors, more storage (and not just grid-scale), more community energy (including citizens...), more efficiency, etc. ? 8GW of nukes is 8GW of unsolved waste issues, is very costly and will be a permitting nightmare to say the least. Am not against nukes, but I prefer using the ones developed by our European neighbors (imports do work with our European energy market...) and focus on a more realistic, healthy and less costly approach. Some common sense please...

ENGIE Belgium and Google have joined forces again! Google and ENGIE have signed a series of new Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (cPPAs), under which ENGIE will provide over 118 MW of renewable power to Google’s digital infrastructure in Belgium. This partnership supports Google's goal of achieving net-zero emissions and 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030. ENGIE will supply Google with energy from four new onshore wind farms (26 MW total) and extend the existing offtake from a 92 MW wind park for another 8 years, totaling around 3.7 TWh of carbon-free energy. This collaboration reinforces ENGIE’s leading position in the PPA market, having sold 2.4 GW of green electricity to industry and large energy consumers in 2023.   As part of its #ENERGIZE2030 strategy, ENGIE aims to accelerate the energy transition in Belgium and contribute to building a carbon-free, reliable, and affordable energy system. Today, ENGIE Belgium teams started the construction of the Vilvoorde Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)🔋. With an installed capacity of 200 MW, this #battery park, which will be one of the largest in #Europe, will be able to store 800 MWh of energy and return it to the grid for 4 hours. This project, which will be able to cover the electricity consumption of 96,000 households, will soon be completed by the Kallo (100MW / 400 MWh) and Drogenbos (80MW / 320 MWh) battery parks, for which we have already obtained the permits. These projects will contribute to ENGIE's goal of achieving 10 GW of installed battery capacity worldwide by 2030. With the growing share of #RenewableEnergies in the energy mix, the contribution of Battery Energy Storage Systems to ensuring the reliability and security of energy systems is becoming essential. Renewable energy in Belgium: 2023 Review and 2024 Outlook Belgium has seen significant growth in renewable energies in recent years. In 2023, the share of renewable energies in the Belgian energy mix will have reached 25%, compared with 18% in 2022. This growth is underpinned by a sharp increase in renewable energy production capacity, particularly solar power. By 2023, Belgium has added 2.7 GW of renewable energy production capacity, including 1.7 GW of solar and 1 GW of wind. These additions offset the drop in output from Belgium's nuclear power plants, which were shut down for safety reasons. Belgium is planning an ambitious growth path for renewable energies. The country has set itself the target of increasing the share of renewable energies in the energy mix to 32% by 2030. To achieve this target, the Belgian government has put in place an ambitious action plan, which includes doubling energy efficiency and significantly increasing renewable energy production capacity. The outlook for 2024 is promising. The Belgian government has announced that it will invest €1.5 billion in renewable energies by 2024. Belgium aims to cut carbon emissions by 55% by 2030 to meet the European Union standards. This goal is to reduce dependence on old nuclear reactors and gas generators and increase renewable energy use. For this project, Elia Group, a Belgian power transmission operator, focused on transitioning their legacy drawing file management system and engineering processes to a centralized digital platform and smart digital workflows. The team used Bentley software to optimize accessibility and traceability for more efficient planning management. This enabled them to handle over two million documents over 2TB used by more than 700 users. This technology also helped the team create a 3D model of the substation layout. Using digital technology enables efficient substation design, lightning protection and controls, clash detection, visualization, and digital analysis via hybrid modeling and digital twin simulation. The project expects to save 30,000 hours and up to EUR 150,000 per year. #digitaltwin #energy #assetmanagement #3Dmodeling #infrastructure #engineering

  Hydrogen will be the new gas in the European Energy System. Innovation is the key to successfully open this door. Recently France and Germany decided important steps to make this idea real. The Hydrogen Core Grid in Germany, projects for example Hy-FEN, BarMar in France and french german cross-border initiatives like MosaHYC are key elements of The European Hydrogen Backbone. RICE GRTgaz, DVGW Deutscher Verein des Gas- und Wasserfaches, DVGW-Forschungsstelle am Engler-Bunte-Institut des Karlsruher Instituts für Technologie (KIT) are leading Research & Development Organisations on Gas and Hydrogen, and have ambitous Hydrogen R&D-initiatives in force. Michel Hardy, Tanguy Manchec, Julien ESTIENNE, Frank Graf and Frank Gröschl evaluated actual research results and discussed new ideas. Pipeline integrity, Storage development, Hydrogen Purity, Testing procedures, Metering are essential R&D actions to enable the Gas Infrastructure transformation towards Hydrogen. European R&D-Collaboration lets the European Hydrogen Backbone grow.

Timing works out well sometimes. On this #EuropeDay, just one month before the European elections, we are witnessing a crucial debate about the future of the energy transition. Europe has done a lot over the last 5 years to accelerate this transition, and at ENGIE, we're proud to have been part of the discussions aimed at setting the framework for this transition to happen. A new moment in this energy and climate policy is approaching, starting with the European elections on 9 June and the start of a new mandate for the European Commission. We have learned from the last few years, and at ENGIE we believe that the EU must focus on the following priorities: - Integrating cost optimization into energy strategy - Filling the blind spots of tomorrow's energy system - Making the energy transition a lever for Europe's reindustrialization and competitiveness - Building a coherent, simple, pragmatic regulatory framework - Better targeting of transition supportive financing Europe can count on the Group's support to achieve this. One thing is certain: it is an illusion to think that the Member States individually can make this transition on their own. Europe has never been so much needed! 📣Last 26th June both the 🇪🇺Directive 2024/1711 and the Regulation 2024/1747 as regards improving the Union’s electricity market design #EMD were published in the official Journal of the EU 📑. 👇Just in case you are asked about the key elements of the #Directive or you need a 2-minute summary, I would like to share with you the following: ✅In legislative terms: 🇪🇺It amends the Directives (EU) 2018/2001 and (EU) 2019/944 🏁It will enter into force next 16 July. 🗓️Member States must transpose it by 17 January 2025. By way of derogation, new art. 4 and 15a by 17 July 2026. ✅I leave you below 🖐️five points I consider #NEW ones: 1️⃣ #EnergySharing is now part of the EU energy legislation and this Directive makes clear that active consumers (of any kind) have the right to energy sharing in a non-discriminatory manner. 2️⃣ #ProtectionFromDisconnections becomes a firm right for vulnerable customers and customers affected by energy poverty. Under this Directive, regulated prices are possible as well for vulnerable customers and customers affected by energy poverty. 3️⃣ #ElectricityPricesCrises is well defined in the Directive through concrete price conditions. If these conditions are met, under the proposal by the EC, the Council can declare a regional or Union-wide electricity price crisis and trigger certain public interventions in price setting for electricity supply. 4️⃣ #SupplierRiskManagement must be regularly assessed by national competent authorities. Stress tests and reporting requirements on suppliers could be tools by which to assess supplier hedging strategies. 5️⃣ #FlexibleConnectionAgreements should have a proper regulatory framework in which transmission system operators and distribution system operators offer this connection possibility in areas where there is limited or no network capacity availability for new connections. #MoreEurope #MoreMarkets
