The BBC investigation into #child labour in jasmine in #Egypt has been getting a lot of traction this week. Our Global Human Rights Risk Database flags an increased risk in Egypt and one of the key drivers is a surge in inflation in Egypt. This skyrocketed from 8.5% in 2022 to 24.4% in 2023 and is poised to reach over 32% this year. This means that food and energy prices are much higher for workers and their wages do not go as far. As such, companies can expect to see an increased risk across all sectors. As companies develop their human rights risks assessments they need to consider major economic shifts, along with political, climate, etc. Our Global Human Rights Risk Assessment provides sector-specific human rights risk scores, heatmaps, data and analysis for over 25 countries. #CSRD, #CSDDD

Yep, COPs need reform. Yes, reforms need to be meaningful. I think even more meaningful than those suggested here. Fully agree with the outset Sandrine Dixson-Declève and Johan Rockström (PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, with whom I agree on pretty much everything relating to #climate and #biodiversity. But don't you think we also need, in particular: * Move from unanimity to majority for COP decisions? * Move from voluntary to mandatory by creating a contractual framework under UNFCCC, allowing those who are ready to move ahead in groups/clubs? They should be in a position to set legally binding and enforceable rules amongst each other, and, on a non-discriminatory basis, with outside laggards (border-adjust, sanction, etc). * Move from guessing to measurement regarding national emission inventories? Climate TRACE (and others) are doing very relevant work, applying the latest technology to measure emissions globally, down to individual sources. Highly recommend new podcast "Whose planet?" from the fabulous Nani Jansen Reventlow and Systemic Justice. Vice Minister Steven Collet delivers his key note address at DIHAD Conference and Exhibition. The current system of aid is not sufficient to address the global needs. Sudan underfunding, Gaza lack of access for humanitarian aid, the distorion of food markets by aid. We need to get rid of aid silos. NL continues to be a top European humanitarian donor. We invest in early warning systems for drought and conflicts. We back not just refugees but also host communities, and support enterpreneurship for refugees. The Prospect partnership is a prime example. We need to gear humanitarian aid in the context for development. And by pooling funding we can be more impactful. We do it with the UN and others. I am uplifted that the UAE is coordinating their NGOs for more impact. 1. Step up. New energy with new funding and new partnership as this conference radiates; 2. Stepping up together with Private Sector together, we have to realise there are so much more actors to work with Philantrophy, Private Sector. 3. We need to coordinate together on the humanitarian principles when doing so. And never forget, we dont work for people but with people. I have previously written about big number fetish in the #aid sector and I am afraid this is another example. “120 million people are now forcibly displaced” reads all the advocacy products from UNHCR promoting their new, flagship Global Trends report. So what’s the problem? The entire report is based on showing and analyzing the trends of displacement up until year end 2023. That data shows 117,3 million people are displaced. So why are they saying 120? Because they have a super interesting model for nowcasting the number of displaced which in April showed that now in fact the numbers are up to 120. This number is mentioned one time in the 48 page report and as such does not really have any substantive link with the content. As such the advocacy material has no link with the report they are trying to promote. So why not - instead of confusing everyone - focus on the substance: 117,3 million which is also a more solid grounded figure. Because 120 is bigger and round and easy to understand and if no one reads the actual report you are trying to promote then it won’t create any confusion. For anyone trying to read the report, you are confused from the start as you on page one meet this graph which unlike all the advocacy that led you to open the report tells you it’s 117,3 millions That turns out to be a bit misleading in itself as the numbers there add up to 118,6 million as indeed some categories overlap and therefore can’t be neatly stacked. All this to say that the Global Trends report is a brilliant piece of work by brilliant people that I use all the time to inform my work but the coms - Dios mio

The EU must be a beacon of highest ethics in international relations. A voice of freedom, justice, solidarity and human rights. Europe's history and the many atrocities we committed in the past oblige us today to be the most committed, outspoken and effective advocates of human dignity. "The EU is founded on the the values of human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities." (Article 2, first sentence, of the Treaty on the European Union) The EU needs to use all its political tools to defend human dignity at home and abroad. #EUDiplomacy #valuesandeurope

🇪🇺🇧🇪Belgian commissioner Hadja Lahbib was recently approved by the European Parliament as the new Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management and Equality of the European Commission. We congratulate her for this important new appointment 👏 During her hearing, Ms. Lahbib underscored key challenges for EU Humanitarian Aid, among which how to better Protect Humanitarians and medical personnel, as well as and the need to reinforce International #HumanitarianLaw (IHL) compliance. Here are some highlights from her audition remarks: 💬 " Violations of International Humanitarian Law have become the rule rather than the exception." 1️⃣ #IHL is essential for protecting #civilians during armed conflicts. However, violations are alarmingly on the rise, obstructing #HumanitarianAid delivery and causing increasing deaths among #HumanitarianPersonnel. 💬 "I will speak out firmly against violations of International Humanitarian Law, wherever they occur, and I will support measures that promote their prevention." 2️⃣ Commissioner Lahbib emphasized the need for stronger efforts to promote respect for IHL, calling the #EU and its member states to take a firm stance against such #violations and #enforce preventive measures. 💬 "The emergence of new challenges requires stronger and more coordinated and systematic approaches involving all relevant EU actors." 3️⃣ More solid and coordinated strategies are needed to ensure aid access, Protect Humanitarians and medical personnel. Strengthening collaboration among EU member states and the European Parliament will be key to supporting adherence to IHL and safeguarding humanitarian personnel. 👏At Protect Humanitarians we congratulate Hadja Lahbib on her important appointment. Given that it is so affordable, so then we must ask: so why is this NOT a global priority, cascading down to our national governments? It's cool to see when our previous and current work lives collide, isn't it ? Research communications and humanitarian communications are two very different beasts (the pace being the most obvious difference!) but I like when they dovetail. My new job at the Oxford Policy Engagement Network involves telling the positive stories of collaborations between Oxford researchers and policy professionals out there in the 'real world' that bring about real and meaningful change. So it's great to see a perfect example of this in a film we produced last year highlighting the work of Andrew Thompson, Professor of Global and Imperial History. Andrew worked with 50 leading NGOs from the UK and beyond to investigate the pressures NGOs are facing in the current climate, and identify changes that need to be made for them to adapt. The study, carried out by Nuffield College researchers, in partnership with Save the Children International and the Centre for Humanitarian Leadership, reveals many INGO leaders know that large-scale changes are needed in the sector. In the survey, leaders expressed concerns about the ability of their organisations to respond effectively to major events and many confessed to feeling ‘stuck’, because of internal dynamics, making it difficult to confront the changing humanitarian landscape, and adapt to the new realities without ‘losing their souls’. How can citizens weigh more on the political agenda? How can democracies tackle political polarisation through more inclusive decision-making? Finding ways to make local decision-making in Europe more inclusive is one of the goals of Horizon-funded research. Projects on participatory democracy show that democratic engagement can harvest novel policy ideas while reconnecting citizens with institutions. 🏛️ ✋ Participation by residents in local decision-making across Europe can bolster public trust in political processes while also countering populism. Many people view their governance system as too distant to be influenced, leading to a polarisation of public debate, with reactionary political forces exploiting social divisions. To counter this trend, social movements and local government actions aiming to expand political participation should be encouraged. Grassroots initiatives such as neighbourhood assemblies, participatory budget communities and citizen panels should be strengthened, too. 💪 #engagement #ParticipatoryDemocracy #polarisation #populism #EUElections2024 🗳️
