🎉 A significant milestone has been reached! Wyre, Telenet, Proximus and Fiberklaar have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a potential future collaboration on the further deployment of fiber networks in Flanders. This brings a win-win-win for the citizen, the region, and the telecom sector. 🚀 A potential collaboration will not only reduce the disruption for citizens but also enable the roll-out of more fiber. This is fantastic news for consumers: fiber will be rolled out at larger scale, while our Hybrid Fiber Coax today already delivers speeds of 1 Gbps all over Flanders and parts of Brussels. 🌐 Once approved by the relevant authorities, we can now shift into high gear to further digitalize Flanders and keep it on the map as a region with one of the fastest and most reliable telecom networks all over Europe. I was quite impressed by this week's European Spectrum Management Conference #EUSpectrum in Brussels, by Forum Europe. Four themes stood out:   1️⃣ After years of silence, there was a refreshing focus on #indoorwireless. While some was a consequence of Wi-Fi Alliance as one of the event’s sponsors, it was a theme that cut across multiple presentations and panels. There was a fractious debate about next steps for the upper #6GHz, discussion of #Private5G (although not much on #neutralhost) & alignment with #DigitalDecade goals for Gigabit connectivity. Also, references to sustainability & lower energy use for indoor systems + FTTP vs. macro RAN blasting through walls. 2️⃣ Spectrum sharing is being taken seriously, especially hybrid-sharing for U6GHz, and enterprise / local spectrum in the 3.8-4.2GHz band. Sharing with & between other technologies and user groups - satellite, military and broadcast - got airtime too. Various regulators and some vendors seem to be onboard (notably Qualcomm), with debate now on "how" rather than "why" - cross-technology signalling, databases, sensing etc, plus trials & specific rules. There's still a lag on "when" though - the EU is moving slowly here. There's a parallel realisation that #6G and #5G Advanced will have to deal with sharing, especially in 6GHz and proposed new 7-8GHz bands. The latter got a very stern presentation from NATO making it clear it's not going to be cleared for mobile use. Basically, Europe needs spectrum sharing. So it should learn to be good at it - and start working fully on it now. Nokia & Ericsson are slow to drop their #5G maximalist positions though (or at least their policy teams). No, outdoor XR isn't a killer reason for more exclusive IMT spectrum. 3️⃣ Everyone is excited about new satellite use-cases and the agenda items for WRC27, especially direct-to-device, but there's plenty of questions over how re-use of existing MNO spectrum to/from space would work in a market with lots of national borders. There seems to be more of a spirit of cooperation - and some sensible regulatory oversight/input - than in many areas of telecoms. One to watch 4️⃣ Various diplomatically-subtle but well-articulated attacks against the European Commission white paper, which with Letta’s report on the Single Market, suggested there should be more centralised control and harmonisation of spectrum #policy across the EU, vs today's powers held by national regulators and 46-country European agency CEPT / Electronic Communications Committee   The EC does not have a stellar record on spectrum – notably strong-arming all EU members into 26GHz mmWave for 5G years early, despite clear signs nobody wanted it. There is huge diversity in spectrum landscapes at a national level (broadcast, military etc), as well as differing appetites for experimentation. Expect plenty of pushback against the proposals. 🔚 In conclusion: A really good event. I'll leave the 5th theme (AI-for-spectrum) for another post.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 ‣ Scaling up production of photonic integrated circuits can reduce costs per chip from thousands to tens of euros. ‣ Integrated optics in compact transceivers have cut power consumption significantly, following a decade-long trend of energy efficiency. ‣ DWDM technology can increase data transmission capacity by 100 times compared to single-channel optics, reducing the need for new fiber installations. Dutch trade association NLconnect invites interested parties to participate in the public consultation on the Product Category Rules (PCR) for passive and active components for fiber optical network components for communication services. NLconnect strives for a level playing field when drawing up Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) of active components and passive materials in the fiber optic industry. Two PCRs are now available for public consultation. Earlier this year, a working group under NLconnect drew up PCRs for active and passive fiber optic products, such as fiber optic cables, ducts, closures, FTUs, fiber trays, modems, routers, ONTs, and switches. With the NLconnect PCRs, manufacturers and suppliers can map the environmental impact of commonly used products in the fiber optic and telecom industries in a standardized way and reduce emissions. Both PCRs are a supplement to the EN 15804 standard (the European standard for the LCA-based environmental performance of construction products), the EN 50693 standard (the European standard for the LCA-based environmental performance of electrical of electronic and electrical equipment) and the Dutch PCR for construction products, "Bepalingsmethode milieuprestatie bouwwerken," of the Nationale Milieudatabase (NMD). The PCRs will be available for consultation from June 21st 2024 to July 22nd 2024.

How do you find anything? We are now 26 years on from the first meetings in 1998, the archive has over 1.5 million TDocs. Step in AI, what if I could do semantic searches? What if I could take patent claims and look for CRs that are similar? What if I could look at trends on work items, or specs, or companies? Well, Iprova have done just that, the Standards Module in Invention Studioevo+ Having been active in 3GPP since the start, chairing, being lead delegate, running a team of the best engineers in the business, I know my way around. Give me a concept and I can find when it was introduced, which specs to look in, and who did what. When I was offered a trial license, I was a little sceptical that any tool would be better than me, but it was. You still need to know the basics (excellent training material on the ETSI and 3GPP websites) but I am now a convert. Like any AI tool it takes a bit of trial and error to formulate the questions, but after a few minutes it was pulling up TDocs I would not have found myself. I would highly recommend standards delegates, patent experts, standards managers getting a license and giving it ago.

On the #security front, issue #8 of 3GPP newsletter contains an article on the Security Assurance (#SCAS) specifications developed by SA WG3. Thanks to my colleagues in SA3, we have been prolific in creating Security Assurance specifications for all major EPC nodes, eNB (4G) and almost all 5G core network nodes. Theses specifications define the basic fundamental test cases which are are used in the GSMA NESAS certification program which are mandatory for the EU and many other regional #cyber-certification and compliance programs.

The company on Tuesday announced the exercise of an additional contract option by CoreWeave. What Happened: Core Scientific (CORZ), a digital infrastructure provider for Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) mining and high-performance computing, announced Tuesday that AI hyperscaler CoreWeave exercised its option for additional infrastructure pursuant to the terms provided as part of its previously announced 200 megawatt (MW) hosting contract. Under terms of the agreement, Core Scientific(CORZ) will modify its infrastructure to deliver approximately 112 of incremental MW for HPC to host CoreWeave’s Nvidia Corp(NVDA) GPUs. Core Scientific (CORZ) said site modifications are expected to begin in the second half of 2024 as the company works towards operational status, which is anticipated in the first half of 2026. “We have now contracted with CoreWeave for a total of 382 megawatts of HPC infrastructure, reflecting the strong demand for high-power data center infrastructure and the unique ability of our team to deliver it,” said Adam Sullivan, CEO of Core Scientific(CORZ). “The latest contract also validates that our strategy for developing application-specific data centers aligns with the increasing energy density requirements for high-performance computing that legacy data centers do not typically satisfy.” The new contract with CoreWeave is expected to add approximately $2 billion in projected additional cumulative revenue over the contract’s 12-year term, bringing the total consideration up to approximately $6.7 billion. 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) introduce significant changes to communication networks by addressing the challenge of delay variations, which are much larger than in cellular networks. This is managed through the introduction of an additional K_offset in 5G Release 17, which adjusts scheduling and resource allocation to accommodate the variable delay times introduced by satellite communication. 🚀 A Leap in Wideband Attenuation: The 2005 Innovation 🛰️ In the mid-2000s, the design of wideband attenuators faced significant challenges, especially at high frequencies where parasitic capacitances of FETs impacted performance. This 2005 research paper introduced a groundbreaking approach to tackle these issues, setting the stage for future advancements in high-frequency communication systems. 🔍 The Breakthrough: The team designed a voltage-controlled attenuator (VCA) with a unique π-network and bandpass filter topology, using 0.15µm GaAs pHEMT technology. By incorporating parasitic capacitances within the bandpass filter structure, they effectively eliminated interference, creating a VCA that achieved consistent, wideband operation from 24 to 32 GHz. Highlights: 1️⃣ Dynamic Range: 12dB ± 0.5dB across the 24-32 GHz range 2️⃣ Power Handling: Managed up to 0 dBm input power 3️⃣ Insertion Loss: A low 2-3 dB ✨ Why It Mattered: For its time, this design significantly advanced the possibilities in RF and microwave systems, establishing new benchmarks for stability and efficiency in variable attenuation.
