New EU rules on trans-European transport network will enter into force this week, including urban nodes in relation to sustainable urban mobility ! They will strengthen the backbone of our mobility system by setting many targets, including: 🚆a minimum speed for trains of 160km/h; 🅿️ safe and secure parking areas every 150 km along the network; ✈️ an obligation to connect major airports with long-distance rail; 📦 more rail freight to meet the current demand.

A different kind of workday for Celestino Sánchez Martín this week as the #XCross_project, funded by Europe's Rail Joint Undertaking, hosted an excellent workshop at the Gravenweg facilities of RET. Participants had the unique chance to connect with experienced welders from RET (Rotterdam Electric Tram) and ProRail. The session was a valuable opportunity to explore the practical side of welding and grinding #railway turnouts and to learn how these critical components function in real-life operations. The railway stretching from #Ghent to #Bruges, in northwestern #Belgium, is currently being upgraded to become a four-track line. Two new tracks are currently being built and the two existing ones will be renovated afterwards. The line is quite valuable for rail freight as it links the three largest ports of the country. The Dutch state secretary for infrastructure, Chris Jansen, recently attended a Digital Automatic Coupling (DAC) demonstration with his German counterpart and sees potential in the new tech. Result of a sophisticated German lobby. The DAC tech is very expensive tech push that, without massive state aid for the replacement and conversion of the rail vehicle fleet (wagons and locomotives), cannot create a positive business case and that does not provide added value for freight trains (the majority of the commercial freight trains) that run in a fixed composition. The #DAC is interesting for the (to a major extent German) supplying industry of rolling stock and components and a heavily subsidized state rail freight transport company. DAC massively increases the costs of rolling stock and leads to accelerated depreciation and decommissioning of existing (even modern) stock. Please, avoid the same mistakes that were made with ERTMS, certainly in the Netherlands. The commercial rail freight transport sector needs assets that are affordable, efficient, and reliable. Unaffordable tech push only prices rail freight transport further out of the market. Product development must be focused on customer value for rail (transportation) users. Taxpayer money can only be spent once. Commercial rail freight transport has (urgent) other priorities to reverse the fully underway reverse modal shift to cheap and highly competitive road transport and to be able to grow commercially and economically healthy. Who wants to be a dinosaur? Why not spend our taxpayer money usefully? Why not the political and policy focus on and decisiveness for realizing a healthy market operation on an interoperable and competitive European rail network with room for entrepreneurs and a level playing field? 🚆 Is the Railway Industry Ready to Meet Growing Demand? The latest data from Pro-Rail Alliance highlights the varying levels of rail investment across Europe, sparking important discussions about the future of rail travel. 📊 Luxembourg leads with a notable €512 per resident investment in 2023, Switzerland and Austria follow with €477 and 336 per resident, showcasing its exemplary and punctual railway system built over the last years and decades. Sweden (€336) and UK (€277) are also making significant strides. However, it’s surprising to see strong economies like Denmark (€133), Belgium (€115), and Germany (€115) investing relatively less. For Germany, this modest investment raises concerns given its central role in European transport. Meanwhile, France (€51) and Spain (€70) are at the lower end, indicating a need for more robust investment, even if there are well working high speed networks in place. With demand for rail travel growing, the gap between investment and need is widening. Without stronger funding, our environmental and connectivity goals could be at risk. 🌍 While Austria and Switzerland are currently role models, the differences in Europe are huge and I believe the path to making rail the easiest, most efficient, and sustainable option for travel between 100 and 1,500 km is still long. 100% agree. Trucks must not disappear. But if we want to improve not only CO2 but even more mobility, we have to switch much more and faster to road + rail/inland waterway. Combination of the modes of transport has to be a priority.

To enable this growth, NS is exploring the potential of Automatic Train Operations (ATO).   ADSE Consulting and Engineering contributes by participating in both the ATO main rail network project and the Remote Driving (RD) project. ADSE created a structured approach from start-to-finish. From defining the research framework to identifying how driver tasks would change with the introduction of RD/ATO technologies. 4th Annual Europe’s Rail Community Event for NS & ProRail FP4 Rail4Earth WP23 Air Quality on Covered Platforms and Tunnels Tuesday 26th we had a community event with NS and ProRail in the NS Trefpunt. We were able to show the progress we made during the last two years in Europe’s Rail on the subject air quality on covered platforms and tunnels. We also had an interesting and fun workshop with the participants of the community day, where they tried to brainstorm together which factors influence the air quality in underground stations. It showed that the subject is quite complex and gave appreciation for the subject. In WP23 of Flagship Project 4 Rail4Earth we try to get a better understanding of non-exhaust emissions by: ·      Defining protocols for air quality measurements ·      Inventorying of low-cost sensors ·      Creating an air quality prediction tool ·      Determining solutions that improve air quality ·      Agreeing on emission factor calculation We work together with SNCF, KTH, Trafikverket, TNO, ProRail and DB.
