Application-based TV: what’s new? Technological and cultural shift in television consumption patterns: ✓A paradigm shift, where the entry point for TV content consumption shifts from a broadcaster’s channel selection to the selection of a broadcaster’s application. ✓It conceals the traditional concept of TV channels. ✓Apps can control all audiovisual content, from multiple sources. ✓Content delivery methods become completely transparent to viewers, facilitating seamless integration with broadband content and services. ✓Viewer profiles as an inherent feature, data accessible with viewer’s consent. ✓Crucial aspect for delivering personalized and engaging TV experiences.

In 2023, the new Dutch audio currency Nationaal Media Onderzoek (NMO) Listening was introduced to the market. This represented a big change in methodology from e-diary to passive electronic measurement using the MediaCell+ app on a smartphone. It brought more granular weekly data, which prompted agencies and advertisers to invest more in radio (+9% in 2023). In 2024, NMO took the next step in further developing the audio currency, and watermarking technology was added to audio-matching in the official audio figures. This ‘best of both worlds’ solution provides stakeholders with detailed (passive-measurement-driven) insight in consumption by platform, allowing accurate measurement of listeners’ transition from FM to DAB/IP. In addition, watermarking helped to remove all ambiguity around simulcast radio/TV broadcasts and has added on average 8% of listening time to what was already captured by audio-matching alone. In their presentation at the 2024 asi International Radio & Audio Conference in Venice, Yvette van den Berg of NMO (Nationaal Media Onderzoek) and Jerôme Schalkwijk Schalkwijk of Ipsos compared the two techniques and showed that combining different measurement technologies delivers the best results for the industry. Yvette and Jerome won this year’s prestigious Tony Twyman Award for best paper at the asi Radio & Audio Conference, kindly sponsored by dataBreeders. 🚨 Features of "Video Quality Monitor", episode 4 🚨 In previous posts, I detailed the metrics, the many different video and audio inputs and the reporting functions in "Video Quality Monitor" (VQM). Today, let's see the special features in VQM. VQM includes several original features: - if you plug an infrared receiver/emitter, you can capture infrared codes from a remote control and re-play them in a script. VQM can also send network commands to control a STB. Useful for STB test and validation. - if you plug a GPS receiver to your PC (a laptop for example), you can create geographic maps showing the quality of video and audio with respect to location. Useful for 3G/4G/5G deployments. - if you want to measure lipsync, VQM can generate an audio/video test signal that you can use as input of your processing chain (encoding, transport, decoding...) in order to check the synchronization between audio and video - VQM can extract the PTS (Presentation Time Stamp) and DTS (Decoding Time Stamp) of a video. Useful to detect lost frames. - VQM can detect pre-defined content (logos, error messages, etc) - VQM can generate particular videos to measure contrast modulation and it can measure colorfulness. Useful to benchmark display devices. - VQM can measure video camera noise, with or without motion compensation. Useful to benchmark video cameras. - VQM can save video samples of problems (low quality, too much blur, etc.). And since all inputs are buffered, VQM can save samples showing how was the video BEFORE the problem happens (so you see the video before and you see the problem appearing). - VQM can save the packets of an MPEG-2 Transport Stream. - VQM can detect the dead pixels in a video - In VQM, you can create scripts to automate processing steps - VQM can be controlled by command line and more...
