Gerdau won our Excellence in sustainability Steelie Award for their ESG in the supply chain programme. The 123-year-old company and Brazil’s largest steel producer, has a diverse chain of suppliers, and bringing them in line with their values has become crucial. They have 18,000 business partners globally, 12,000 of whom are in Brazil. In order to encourage the supply chain to adopt governance, compliance, and human rights practices, as well as sustainable initiatives and exert control over their social and environmental management, Gerdau has implemented an ESG Management Journey in the supply chain, which includes the following initiatives: Inspire, ESG Clause, and ECOAR. Exploring Liquid Metal Embrittlement (LME) in Advanced High Strength Steel Components. Liquid Metal Embrittlement (LME) can lead to surface cracks during resistance spot welding of advanced high-strength steels, a critical material used in automotive body construction. While the mechanisms of LME have been extensively studied in academic, single-spot tests, there remains a lack of comprehensive data on components produced at industrial scale. In a collaborative effort with Paderborn University and Fraunhofer IPK, WorldAutoSteel has built upon earlier LME research to produce a Phase 2 report focused on real-world components. Currently, there is no standardised methodology for greenhouse gas (GHG) chain of custody approaches, leading companies to create individual schemes tailored to their specific requirements. As the number of these schemes increases, the demand for industry guidance has become more evident. To address this need, worldsteel, in collaboration with its members, has formulated a set of Principles and Guidelines aimed at enhancing transparency and clarity in the application of chain of custody approaches within the steel sector. There has been a revision to the October 2024 crude steel production data released on Friday 22nd November. The figure for South Korea has been revised, affecting the Asian and global figures. The new global figure is 152.1 million tonnes, a 1.0% increase on October 2023.
