🌍 A Decade of Collaboration: The VLIRUOS IUC Partnership with Universidad de Oriente. Cuba (Santiago de Cuba) From 11-15 November 2024, the Institutional University Cooperation (IUC) partnership celebrated its concluding phase in Santiago de Cuba with a week of academic workshops and a Closing Award Session. Launched in 2012, this partnership brought together Flemish higher education institutions—coordinated by Vrije Universiteit Brussel and supported by Hasselt University, University of Antwerp, Ghent University, and KU Leuven—to tackle key challenges: 🔬 Improving #publichealth through biomedical applications 🌱 Boosting agricultural productivity while addressing #biodiversity and #climatechange 🏛️ Preserving cultural and historical #patrimony 💡 Advancing #renewableenergy, biofuels, and ICT The Closing Event saw participation from Cuban and Flemish dignitaries, professors, and stakeholders, reflecting the deep institutional and societal impact this collaboration achieved. 💪 Though this VLIRUOS project has reached its conclusion, the partnership and shared commitment will continue to inspire future endeavors. 🌍 On November 14, we joined the 11.11.11 action, representing Flemish higher education institutions committed to academic cooperation for global sustainable development. This action highlighted the urgent need for continued international solidarity and support for global partnerships. The challenges we face—war, climate crises, migration, pandemics, poverty, and inequality—demand collective action. International cooperation delivers real impact, from eradicating diseases like polio to empowering young leaders who drive change in their communities. It’s not just aid; it’s a strategic investment that fuels economic growth, sparks innovation, and fosters social progress worldwide—benefiting us all. The solutions we create with global partners also inspire innovative progress here at home.🌱✨ We urge federal negotiators to stay committed to international solidarity and maintain investments in global cooperation, even amid financial constraints. We just had the kick-off meeting for the #CARES Project—a collaborative initiative funded by VLIRUOS aimed at fostering sustainability and circular economy practices in Ethiopia’s coffee sector! 🌱☕ Led by Luis Diaz Allegue and Siegfried Vlaeminck from the Universiteit Antwerpen, and in partnership with Shimelis Kebede and S.Anuradha Jabasingh from the Addis Ababa Institute of Technology, this project will explore innovative approaches to make coffee production more sustainable, while enhancing local livelihoods. We’re thrilled to embark on this journey together and can’t wait to see how CARES will unfold in the coming years, making a positive impact on both the environment and the Ethiopian coffee industry.
