Huge thanks to Commission for Countering Extremism, VVSG, Stad Mechelen, and Hannah Arendt Instituut for their valued contributions to the recent extremism workshop hosted by British Embassy Brussels. Healthy discussions on the impact of extremism risks on UK and Belgian society. We shared good practice on extremism research and approaches to multi-agency and multi-level governance - a productive and insightful day.

Celebrating the Rich Tapestry of British Performing Arts in Belgium 🎭 I was delighted to host “A Night of British Theatre & Carols' at the British Residence, in collaboration with the UK Mission to the EU and the Scottish Government. The performances showcased the vibrant cultural exchange that makes our creative community unique. In celebration of the UK’s rich cultural tapestry, we journeyed through our nations - from the lyrical verses of Northern Ireland’s Seamus Heaney and Wales’ Dylan Thomas to a monologue from Hugh Dow on what it means to be Scottish and an extract from Wyrd Sisters by English author Terry Pratchett. Shakespeare, panto, and carols highlighted how performing arts, and creative industries serve as a bridge between cultures, fostering international partnerships and strengthening the role of English-language theatre in Belgium's cultural landscape. We're proud to support these local theatre groups that contribute to Brussels' dynamic arts scene while promoting cross-cultural understanding through the universal language of performance. Meet tobacco dog Boycie who recently visited Zeebruges, at Port of Antwerp-Bruges with his handler from the UK Border Force. HM Revenue & Customs and Belgian customs at FOD Financiën recently shared expertise on how to detect smuggled tobacco. Crime gangs use the profits from the sale of smuggled tobacco to pay for their activities in illicit markets such as modern slavery, human trafficking, drugs, firearms and prostitution. Belgium is an important neighbour and partner to the UK in protecting the UK border.

UK Minister Emma Hardy attended the Greater North Sea Basin Initiative Ministerial Meeting, hosted by Minister Tinne Van der Straeten, Minister Paul Van Tigchelt and Minister Hilde Crevits. Along with Ministers from Denmark, France Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the European Commission, the UK and Belgium signed the Antwerp Ministerial Declaration. This represents a shared commitment to tackle biodiversity loss and marine ecosystem degradation in the North Sea through regular knowledge sharing among North Sea neighbours. We look forward to ongoing collaboration with Belgium, our North Sea Neighbours, and the European Commission to protect our environment and tackle climate change.
