Today Jean Van Wetter (Managing Director Enabel) and Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel (Chair of the management board Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH), represented by Reinhold Elges (Director of the GIZ Representation Brussels), in cooperation with the Practitioners' Network for European Development Cooperation launched the European Think Tanks Group ETTG Collective Report “Staying engaged as Team Europe in fragile settings” 🔗 https://bit.ly/3D4XuEQ   This follows an October high-level roundtable on how European implementing agencies can effectively support fragile contexts. 🤝  🖇️ https://bit.ly/4gsejYT   Key insights from the ETTG Collective Report: Dr. Julian Bergmann from German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) stressed the importance of the emerging consensus that the EU stays engaged in fragile context - and the need to realise that this is a starting point and not a strategy. Deep local political understanding and multi-level, needs-based intervention strategies are key for building strong, effective #partnerships in fragile contexts. The report outlines practical solutions for implementing agencies to enhance their engagement in regions like the #CentralSahel. 📰✍️     Moderated by Sophie Desmidt from ECDPM 🌍, the panel discussion featured Erica Gerretsen (European Commission’s DG INTPA), Lori-Anne Théroux-Bénoni (Institute for Security Studies), Pascal Yao Konan (AfricanUnion), and Simon Connell (SNV).  👉 Key takeaways:   - The cost of disengagement outweighs risks of staying engaged in fragile contexts.  - Staying engaged, however, is not a standalone solution.  - Integrated approaches are crucial to put #HumanDevelopment needs back at the centre of #TeamEurope’s engagement.  - #GlobalGateway has a role to play in fragile context. But #TeamEurope needs to invest robustly in enabling environments through the 360° approach to help ensure that Global Gateway delivers for partners in fragile contexts. - Ultimately, the aim should be to achieve #resilience in the face of global challenges - worldwide. 🌍    Going forward, the results of the Collective Report will be put into action to aid implementing agencies working better together as #TeamEurope in the framework of the Commission-wide integrated approach on fragility (Hadja Lahbib & Jozef Sikela).    ✨ Looking forward to continuing the great collaboration with Enabel in 2025! 🌍 In a world of rising challenges, staying engaged in fragile contexts is no longer optional - it's essential. 📢 This morning, Jean Van Wetter and Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel, Chair of the Management Board of GIZ, represented by Reinhold Elges, GIZ Country Director for Brussels, continued the important dialogue on “Staying Engaged as Team Europe in Fragile Contexts”, following October's initial discussions. The objectives? Tackling development, peacebuilding, and humanitarian challenges in a rapidly shifting global landscape. With the support of the European Think Tanks Group ETTG, we co-developed a collective report offering practical recommendations for European engagement in these complex environments. Key takeaways include: 🔑 For the EU: ✔️ Address the risks of disengaging from central governments and its long-term impact. ✔️ Equip agencies with clear mandates and consistent messaging for stakeholders. ✔️ Advocate for a unified European position to enhance coherence and unity. 🔑 For cooperation agencies and development actors: ✔️ Enhance expertise and share knowledge across organisations. ✔️ Embrace locally driven approaches and flexible funding tailored to fragile contexts.. ✔️ Strengthen coordination and joint implementation among European stakeholders. 💡 These insights aim to ensure that #TeamEurope stays committed, effective, and impactful in fragile settings.
