Save the date! The Philea Forum 2025 will take place in Lisbon, Portugal on 2-5 June, exploring “Power and Equality: A Balancing Act”, hosted by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Recent global events have amplified awareness of systemic inequalities and historical injustices. These incidents have sparked a societal reckoning with racial, social and economic justice, placing philanthropic organisations themselves under scrutiny for their role in perpetuating or challenging existing power imbalances. A clear line has since been drawn connecting widening inequality and power imbalances to rising polarisation and challenges to democracy. The Philea Forum 2025 will address these critical issues, exploring the intersection of inequalities, power imbalances and structures which are sustaining them (including within philanthropy) and the ways in which we can help create the more equitable and just society we want and need. We will explore what truly equitable societies might look like and identify steps to create them. Registration will open the first week of February 2025! https://bit.ly/3OaUPfj

African philanthropy has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, including the growth of private foundations and funds, family and community-based initiatives, individual giving and collective solidarity mechanisms. Driven in part by the increasing wealth of Africa’s affluent class, this rise in philanthropic activity is giving way to increased African voice and say over the type of programmes they want to create and be funded, particularly on the African continent. The second webinar of the “Evolving Practices of International Cooperation” peer-learning journey will take place on 11 December exploring “Aligning Funder Strategies Between Global North and South”, organised by the Funders International Network for Development (FIND). As the world faces growing climate impacts, the debate around mitigation versus adaptation has never been more pressing. Instead of seeing adaptation and mitigation as opposing forces, funders should find ways to integrate them. Stefan Flothmann, Mindworks Lab and Jozsef Feiler, European Climate Foundation explain how this approach can empower communities, build social capital, reduce climate denial and engage new audiences in climate action in a recent Opinion. Find out how funders can align climate mitigation and adaptation below! https://bit.ly/4eL6R9R
