The NBB is delighted to have hosted over 200 master students from the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management on 12 November. 🌍📈 Climate change may affect food inflation in Belgium   👉 Climate change is affecting Belgium through rising average temperatures, more intense precipitation, and more frequent and more intense extreme weather events such as floods and heatwaves.   👉 These developments affect food inflation via both supply and demand channels.   👉 Although the literature is still limited at this stage, it mainly focuses on food inflation, given that the agricultural sector is directly dependent on weather conditions and because food represents a significant share of our consumption. 🍅🌽   👉 Climate change could lead to a moderate increase in food inflation in Belgium, especially during the summer months. 📢 Since the beginning of this month, Belgium has headed up the Belgian-Dutch constituency at the International Monetary Fund (#IMF), taking over from the Dutch after four years.    👉 Belgium will lead and represent a group of sixteen countries on the IMF’s Executive Board for the next four years.  Aside from Belgium and the Netherlands, the other members of the constituency are Andorra, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Georgia, Israel, Luxembourg, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania and Ukraine.    👉 National Bank economist Jeroen Clicq has been appointed the new Executive Director. His alternate is Marnix van Rij from the Netherlands.

📢 Depuis le début du mois de novembre, la Belgique assure à nouveau la présidence de la constituante belgo-néerlandaise au Fonds monétaire international (FMI), après quatre ans de présidence néerlandaise.    👉 Durant les quatre prochaines années, notre pays sera à la tête d’un groupe de 16 pays au sein du Conseil d’administration du FMI. Ce groupe comprend, outre la Belgique et les Pays-Bas, Andorre, l’Arménie, la Bosnie-Herzégovine, la Bulgarie, la Croatie, Chypre, la Géorgie, Israël, le Luxembourg, la Moldavie, le Monténégro, la Macédoine du Nord, la Roumanie et l’Ukraine.    👉 Jeroen Clicq, économiste à la Banque nationale, a été nommé au poste d’administrateur. Il est assisté par le Néerlandais Marnix van Rij, nommé comme suppléant. Félicitations, Jeroen!

📢 Sinds begin november neemt België bij het Internationaal Monetair Fonds (#IMF), na vier jaar Nederland, opnieuw het voorzitterschap van de Belgisch-Nederlandse kiesgroep op.     👉Ons land zal de volgende vier jaar een groep van zestien landen leiden in het dagelijks bestuur van het IMF. Deze kiesgroep bestaat naast België en Nederland uit Andorra, Armenië, Bosnië en Herzegovina, Bulgarije, Kroatië, Cyprus, Georgië, Israël, Luxemburg, Moldavië, Montenegro, Noord-Macedonië, Roemenië en Oekraïne.     👉 Nationale Bank econoom Jeroen Clicq werd aangesteld als nieuwe Executive Director. Hij wordt bijgestaan door de Nederlander Marnix van Rij die werd benoemd tot Alternate Executive Director. Proficiat Jeroen!

US presidential election 2024: what impact will it have on the Belgian economy?   🔍 With marked differences between #KamalaHarris and #DonaldTrump on key issues such as trade policy, immigration and the regulation of big tech, the outcome of this election will not only determine the future of relations between Belgium and the United States, but will also influence our businesses, jobs and economic growth.   NBB economist, Kristel Buysse, will discuss these issues at a conference organised by the Forum Financier Belge Oost-Vlaanderen. On 23 and 24 October, the NBB hosted a physical Cyber Information and Intelligence Sharing Initiative (CIISI-EU) event in Brussels.   This event gathered amongst others central banks, clearing houses, exchanges, payment system providers and law enforcement authorities.   The purpose of this initiative is to share intelligence and best practices to enhance the protection of the financial system against cyber risks and in the fight against cybercrime.   After a welcome from Samuel Goret, head of TIBER-BE team, some members presented their updates and concrete examples how to identify, protect and respond to cyberattacks. Nicolas Schroeders, head of SOC, was also on hand to share his observations.   Although CIISI-EU holds a monthly online meeting to share and update the latest intelligence and cyber security news, physical events like this one provide a good opportunity for community members to meet in person and strengthen their international relations.
