Advancing Parkinson's Disease Treatment: Harnessing Gut Microbiome Research to Develop Novel Therapeutics. Exciting news from the local University Hospital Ghent and the VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research! A groundbreaking stool transplant (FMT) study sheds light on the potential of the microbiome as a therapeutic intervention for Parkinson's disease (PD). The GUT-PARFECT trial, conducted by the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital Ghent, Belgium, in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research, was set up as a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised, phase 2 trial, aiming to evaluate the clinical effects and safety of a single FMT in patients with early-stage Parkinson's Disease (PD). The primary outcome measure was the change in the Movement Disorders Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) motor score obtained during off-medication evaluations. After 12 months, patients who received FMT with healthy donor stool demonstrated a significant improvement in the MDS-UPDRS motor score compared to those who received placebo. Importantly, adverse events were limited to temporary abdominal discomfort, highlighting the safety profile of the intervention. These very promising findings, published in the Lancet (https://lnkd.in/eT9Eut_e) underscore the potential of modulating the gut microbiome as a therapeutic approach for PD and pave the way for further exploration of rationally designed microbiome therapeutics in larger cohorts of patients with PD in various disease stages. These data encourage us in our efforts to provide a completely novel treatment strategy to PD patients across the globe. In close collaboration with the VIB, Ghent University and international collaborators we continue to leverage our CORAL technology in addressing the complex challenges of Parkinson's Disease and developing defined and standardized microbiome-based therapeutics with the potential to impact the course of the disease. Once more a great achievement for MRM Health: The topline results from our Phase 2a clinical study with MH002 in the rare disease indication Pouchitis look very promising! Following the recent positive results obtained with MH002 in Ulcerative Colitis, the consistent treatment effects observed with MH002 in Pouchitis further underscore its potential in indications characterized by mucosal damage and inflammation. 🔬 Key Study Highlights: Safety: MH002 was safe and well tolerated with no evidence of adverse reactions when administered for 8 weeks. Efficacy: We noted a consistent effect on all clinically relevant parameters, with a clinical remission rate of 46% at week 8, a mean decrease in the modified Pouchitis Disease Activity Index (mPDAI) symptom score of 42% and a concomitant mucosal healing and reduction of mucosal inflammation. The study was performed as a stand-alone treatment with MH002, in an 8-week open-label remission induction design with 14 patients. Phase 2/3 Progression: Encouraged by these results, we will continue the development of MH002 into Phase 2/3 development at full speed, further supported by recent positive regulatory feedback. These results are a further key milestone in our mission to lead the field and advance safe and effective microbiome-based therapeutics to the patient!
