Today was a true milestone moment for the Global Battery Alliance as #Germany #Serbia and #Zambia declare their intent to join as government members of the GBA at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference In his opening remarks to the conference in the presence of the Heads of the International Monetary Fund, The World Bank, UNDP and the Heads of State of Namibia, Mauritania, Barbados, Rwanda and many more, Federal Chancellor #OlafScholz said the GBA was the ‘world’s most important partnership to scale sustainable, responsible value chains for batteries’ Handing over their declarations of intent to GBA Executive Director Inga Petersen were none other than His Excellency the President of Serbia A. Vucic, German Federal Minister Svenja Schulze and Permanent Secretary C. Hichikumba of Zambia. Since starting as a conversation around a coffee table at the World Economic Forum almost ten years ago, the GBA has grown to become the world’s largest multi-stakeholder partnership in the energy storage space. Sincere thanks to the teams at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the panelists including Simon Njovu, Thorsten Pinkepank and Moderator Greg Radford as well as the full team and members of the Global Battery Alliance for taking our partnership to the next level! Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) press release available here: https://lnkd.in/eBgWWJ9e Gim Neo Dr. Martin Brudermüller Benedikt Sobotka Atle Høie Jon Creyts @Robin Zeng

🌍🔋 We are pleased to announce our participation in the Global Battery Alliance's 2024 Battery Passport pilots, marking an important step towards improving transparency and sustainability in battery value chains. 🔋🌏 As part of the GBA's collaborative efforts, CATL contributed to two #pilot projects for its Shenxing and CTP #batteries. These projects, verified by independent agencies, reflect our ongoing commitment to fostering a greener and more sustainable future. Highlights include: 👣 A carbon footprint of 49 kgCO2eq/kWh across both pilots, showcasing efforts to reduce #emissions throughout the battery lifecycle. 🍃 Strong alignment with Battery Passport criteria, focusing on #transparency, traceability, and environmental considerations. 📚 Development of seven rulebooks addressing key #sustainability topics such as greenhouse gas emissions, circular design, and biodiversity. CATL is proud to support this initiative, which aligns with our broader vision for sustainable development and #circularity. By collaborating with industry partners, we aim to contribute to global standards for battery sustainability and promote advancements in regulatory and product #innovation.

It was a pleasure to join this roundtable to launch the collaborative report with Deloitte on uncertainties related to meeting the #battery #recycled content targets in the #EU. The paper points to lots more work to be done, to balance the incentives for recycling and repurposing of batteries, responsible sourcing and production of recycled materials, and facilitating the global trade of used EVs and recycled feedstock. All of these are themes the Global Battery Alliance will take forward in it's Circularity and Critical Minerals programme in 2025. Kudos and pleasure to work with our Circularity expert Pramoda Gode on this effort!
Did you know that more than 60% of global Lithium demand is attributed to EV batteries, up from just 15% in 2017? With the global transition to electric vehicles accelerating, concerns are growing over the substantial demand for minerals required for battery production. It's therefore been a pleasure for Deloitte to collaborate with the Global Battery Alliance during the last months. Together, we have modelled the future availability of critical minerals, focusing on recycling as a means to address scarcity, environmental concerns, and EU regulatory targets. Many thanks to Kaisa Toroskainen for co-hosting our roundtable discussion together with representatives from the Automotive, E-Mobility, Industrial Materials and Waste Management sectors, as well as to all the GBA members who contributed to our study. And of course to Maarten Dubois Indi de Graaf Sjoerd de Jager Bianca Melodia Nina Neubauer for all the extensive research and analysis! Thanks Alessandro Blasi for championing #batteries and to the The Washington Post for this brilliant illustration of why we need them!

The "BATTERY ERA" in a nice cartoon from Washington Post.. 🔋 ⚡️ 🚙 Batteries are the fastest-growing energy technology, pushed by the favourable alignment of factors... : 👉 Costs of batteries have significantly plunged over the last year and all largest manufacturing companies signals a continuation of the trend. 👉 Price of key metals for batteries have been declining significantly providing deflationary pressures. 👉 A growing attention from multiple governments about importance of batteries both for EVs and for #power storage. 👉 Demand is simply booming for EVs the sales have increased of almost 7 times in just few years; for power storage the growth trend is simply vertical. 👉 #Innovation is going fast and faster, doing more with less as far as concerns traditional components, while new chemistries are tested and introduced into the market. #data #energy #technology #sustainability

Whilst circularity is much larger than recycling and begins with circular product and process design, - as the world accelerates toward clean energy transitions #recycling of critical minerals is becoming a vital strategy for securing a sustainable supply. The recent publication 'Recycling of Critical Minerals' by the International Energy Agency (IEA) highlights several important points: ⛏️ Recycling can reduce the need for new mining by up to 40% for certain minerals by 2050, while also decreasing environmental and social impacts. This will be key in meeting global climate goals. 💲 The market for recycled energy-transition minerals is expected to reach $200 billion, yet current recycling efforts are falling behind the growth in material consumption, especially for materials like copper and nickel. 🗒️ Many countries lack comprehensive strategies for recycling. Policy frameworks that include financial incentives and material recovery mandates are important to improving recycling systems globally. 🔋 With the growing demand for EVs and storage solutions, battery recycling is a key opportunity. It could meet up to 30% of the demand for lithium, cobalt, and nickel by mid-century. ♻️ Significant gaps in recycling infrastructure exist, particularly in developing economies. Supporting these regions with technology transfers can help close the gap and promote sustainable development. The IEA’s report highlights the importance of expanding recycling infrastructure and enhancing collection rates to reduce dependence on primary minerals, cut emissions, and promote a more circular economy. The future of clean energy depends on how well we manage the resources we already have. https://lnkd.in/dfabuusT
