Deforestation, land grabbing, water pollution. What do these things have in common?🤷 They are just a few of the devastating consequences caused by the extraction and processing of raw materials within the mining industry. The environmental and social impacts of irresponsible mining practices can devastate communities worldwide ⛏️🏡❌ Justice for those negatively affected by the mining industry should not only focus on current generations, but also prioritise future generations. By adopting a multidimensional approach to policy and practices, we can change to ensure intergenerational justice 🫂✊ With the global boom in demand for critical raw materials, the EU must take responsibility for its role in harming the global environment through excessive extractivism💪🪨 #GenerationClimateEurope

Did you know? In 2023, the EU officially defined ‘energy poverty’, but data on how it impacts young people is still missing! Plus, policies rarely treat youth as a distinct group. Generation Climate Europe launched a survey this year revealing that 60% of young people worry about meeting their energy needs, like staying warm or charging their devices. While this is not representative of the entire EU youth population, our report is a vital first step in understanding energy poverty among youth and shaping policies that tackle its social, economic, and environmental impacts. ⛏️🌍Did you know that the impacts of the global mining industry have a huge role in Europe’s energy transition?! 🌍⛏️ Critical raw materials are crucial components essential to everyday modern life- powering our phones, electric vehicles, wind turbines, and much, much more 📱 The EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) outlines the EU’s strategy to protect and diversify Europe’s supply of critical raw materials 🛠️ Although, the CRMA supports the enhancement of circular practices and increased data transparency, it could also enable mining companies to bypass environmental regulations 👎 The CRMA is designed to ensure speedy EU access to essential strategic materials, however this means that meeting rising resource demand could be prioritised over environmental protections 🌳❌ In addition, the CRMA accelerates the process of dispute resolution, rushing the information and consent process of mining companies with affected communities 🙅🪨 By the end of 2024, the first list of the Strategic Projects for both the EU and third countries will be published! 📝 📢 Stay tuned to the GCE Resource Justice Team’s campaign on critical raw materials to discover more about the global mining industry and the EU’s role in shaping it! And be sure to stay updated this week as GCE attends the EU Raw Materials Week, from the 9th to 13th of December in Brussels! 📢

🪨✊⛏️What are the intergenerational impacts of mining? How can we safeguard young people and future generations to ensure intergenerational justice in mining industries?⛏️✊🪨 📈With resource consumption projected to rise dramatically over the next few years, UNEP & IRP’s Global Resource Outlook of 2024 warns that “without urgent and concerted action to change the way resources are used, material resource extraction could increase by almost 60 per cent from 2020 levels by 2060… far exceeding what is required to meet essential human needs 📈 ♻️To support the projected demand for resources, the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), is pushing for diversified extraction and processing of raw materials. As part of this effort, establishing Strategic Projects to extract, process and recycle critical raw materials within the EU, and Strategic Partnerships with third countries to diversify the EU's current supply chain are essential ♻️ 🗣💬This interactive panel discussion, organised and moderated by Generation Climate Europe (GCE) as part of the European Raw Materials Coalition, brings together civil society organisations to discuss the intergenerational implications of mining in light of the Critical Raw Materials Act. Speakers will discuss the safeguards needed to protect young people and future generations from the harmful effects of raw material extraction, processing, and disposal, and how EU mining ambitions affect these parties within the EU and third countries 🗣💬 🇪🇺 Additionally, it will emphasise the pertinence of youth involvement within EU decision-making. This conversation comes at a pivotal moment in European politics, coinciding with the start of the new European Commission's mandate and the appointment of an EU Commissioner responsible for intergenerational fairness 🇪🇺 📝 Sign up here to join the conversation! 📝 https://lnkd.in/edhD5WgG
