🌍 🇬🇷 I am thrilled to share that I had the privilege of conducting sessions on Citizens’ Assemblies during the 5th School of Participatory Democracy, organised by the Conseil de l'Europe, SYMBIOSIS and Andreas Papandreou Foundation in Athens from December 4th to 8th. The sessions brought together Greek civil servants from all levels of governance and representatives from civil society organisations, creating a rich and diverse learning environment. I was truly impressed by their enthusiasm, interest, and engagement with democratic innovation tools. Their dedication to fostering deliberative and participatory democracy was inspiring! My sessions focused on Citizens’ Assemblies as an innovative mechanism to bring diverse citizens perspectives into decision-making processes. Together, we explored: 🗝️ The structure, advantages, and applications of citizens’ assemblies at various governance levels. 🗝️ Key considerations for effective implementation, including suitable topics, framing questions, and inclusive recruitment processes. 🗝️ Practical strategies for integrating assemblies across the policy-making cycle, from agenda-setting to policy evaluation. Through interactive group work, participants engaged deeply with these concepts, contributing their unique perspectives. A heartfelt thank you to all the incredible organisers, participants, and contributors who made this event so impactful! Many thanks to Rémi Wagenheim, Cornelia Perle, Daniele Del Bianco, Ramona Velea, Dako Muradashvili, Natalya Сhornogub, Melis TÜRKER, Ljubisa Vrencev, Despina Syrri and Piera Amourgi. A special acknowledgment to George Papandreou, former Prime Minister of Greece, for his involvement and unwavering support alongside his amazing team, as well as to Athens' Mayor Haris Doukas. 🤝 I look forward to continuing to work with our great colleagues in Greece!

We are on the verge of the first-ever Democracy Intergroup of the European Parliament! Yesterday, the initiative of several international organisations was championed by Michał Wawrykiewicz (European People's Party), bringing together MEPs across the political spectrum to expand citizens' participation, safeguard the rule of law and combat the spread of misinformation. We are grateful for the support expressed by Chloé Ridel and Brando Benifei (Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament), Nathalie Loiseau and Veronika Cifrová Ostrihoňová (Renew Europe) and Sergey Lagodinsky (The Greens/EFA in the European Parliament). Momentum is growing across political families to unite and defend the values of representative and inclusive democracies — let's make it count! Last week in Tirana, we witnessed the launch of a new community of practice on deliberative democracy. Under the auspices of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, the meeting brought together elected officials and civil servants from municipalities and regions across South-Eastern Europe. From countries including Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania and North Macedonia. Participants were introduced to the concept and practice of deliberative democracy, learned how the Congress supports deliberative initiatives in the region and heard testimonials from elected officials in Mostar and Banja Luka, two cities from Bosnia and Herzegovina, on their experiences with Citizens' Assemblies. Yves Dejaeghere was invited to hold a session on concepts and evolutions in democratic innovation. This meeting is part of the project 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵-𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 in which the Congress will also provide intense capacity-building for public officials from the region keen to expand and implement this knowledge. FIDE will continue to support this project with Damir Kapidzic and facilitation trainer Christiane Amici Raboud. Finally, the Congress has also published a practical guide on deliberative methods for these local authorities, of which FIDE was a co-author. This guide has already been translated from English into Bosnian, and translations into Serbian, Macedonian, Albanian and Montenegrin are currently being made. 🚀 I was delighted to participate in the panel debate "Empowering a Green Future: Just Transition and Citizen Co-Design in Environmental Policies” at the Eurocities' Environment Forum 2024, hosted by the City of Vienna in its magnificent city hall. 🌍 In my pitch, I emphasised that involving citizens in climate governance is essential. Without it, we risk a disconnect between policy measures and citizens' needs, which can lead to climate policies being either watered down or poorly accepted — something we've seen at different stages of the European Green Deal. 🤝 Climate citizens' assemblies are a great way to co-design effective climate policies because: 🔍 They can give a voice to concerns about long-term impacts, representing the interests of future generations who are absent from current decision-making processes. ⚖️ They can counterbalance the influence of powerful vested interests, prioritizing citizens' perspectives and the common good. 💬 They can help limit over-reliance on technological solutions, integrating social values into the policy process. Of course, this only applies if politicians and civil servants take these processes and, above all, their outcomes seriously. It was a pleasure to be on the panel with Seona Candy, who brilliantly outlined what a just transition entails and how it can be achieved democratically, and with Vujo Ilić, who powerfully highlighted the indispensable role of citizen deliberation and active participation in shaping effective and inclusive climate governance. 🔗 You can rewatch the panel under this link:[https://lnkd.in/eX3gFvNh]. Many thanks to the organisers, especially Aleksandra Ziętek, and the entire Eurocities and City of Vienna team for making this event possible! #EurocitiesEnvironmentForum #Deliberation #CitizenEngagement #ClimateGovernance #JustTransition #ClimateAction #CityofVienna #GreenFuture FIDE - Europe

In the wake of the recent U.S. election outcome, a stark reminder of democracy’s fragility, the need to bolster democratic institutions has never been more urgent. As polarization grows, public institutions face the pressing challenge of rebuilding public trust. This was the spirit of the latest meeting hosted at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg for the 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲. Members shared their diverse capacity-building initiatives aimed at strengthening institutions and embedding citizen participation more deeply into governance processes. In a notable highlight, the network was welcomed by the Austrian Ambassador and permanent representation to the Council of Europe, Aloisia Wörgetter, who underscored the importance of citizen engagement. Through this support, members connected with Austrian politicians, key representatives in the Council of Europe, and the former Greek Prime Minister, George Papandreou, to build further connections around citizen participation. 🤝 This network is managed and supported by Bertelsmann Stiftung. Members also engaged in collaborative sessions designed to foster synergies and develop new strategies. These discussions are paving the way for stronger, more unified efforts to enhance democratic participation across European institutions. #DemocraticInnovation #DeliberativeDemocracy

⛔ We are leaving X. It has been a long due decision. Over a year ago, as X’s degradation became clear, we opened a Mastodon account to transition our followers gradually. Despite our consistent posting, building an active, engaged community on Mastodon has proven challenging, and we continue to work towards a vibrant space for public dialogue. X has become a hub for rising hate speech, misinformation, and toxic behaviour, eroding its capacity to support constructive discourse and democratic values. These developments strike at the heart of what FIDE stands for, and we can no longer endorse a platform that disregards the principles of respectful, inclusive dialogue. With this announcement, we call on others to support online spaces that uphold democratic values—platforms where respect, truth, and inclusivity prevail. Let’s build communities that prioritize the integrity of information and open, diverse engagement. 🐘 Follow us on Mastodon at https://lnkd.in/dGFbT6sN #DigitalDemocracy #DemocraticInnovation #DeliberativeDemocracy
