On stage at the #AItransition summit in Milan 🇮🇹. An event watched by 2.500 people, organised by Il Sole 24 Ore and Radio 24. My main points: ➡️ Europe is a producer of technologies with over a million SMEs active in the digital sector, 70% in software ➡️ But, there is a widening gap in productivity between the EU 🇪🇺 and the US 🇺🇸 ➡️ The reason is that European companies do not own the digital infrastructure they use, namely cloud, platforms and generative AI. ➡️ Our private and public sectors must have a common strategy and invest together to deliver Europe’s digital infrastructure #eurostack My introduction was followed by a panel moderated by Enrico Pagliarini with Antonio Capone, Claudio Ricci of TIM Enterprise and Marco Pennarola of Fastweb.

DIGITAL SME is optimistic after yesterday's #hearing of Henna Virkkunen, the EU's designated EVP for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy. In the aftermath of the #US election, it was great to see that a lot of attention was reserved to the topic of #tech #sovereignty by MEPs. We also welcomed the focus by the Commissioner-Designate and MEPs on simplification and enforcement of existing regulation-making gatekeepers compliant with DMA and online platforms abiding the DSA rules should be a priority - and on building an innovative ecosystem in #Europe. It was great to see several MEPs raising the need to build a Digital Public Infrastructure and save Europe from reliance on tech giants for our #digital needs. We welcomed the approach emphasised by the Commissioner-designate to look into attracting private investment to build the #Eurostack, acknowledging the role played by open #innovation and standards and by #SMEs in delivering digital innovation in Europe. These are all crucial components for Europe to attain more autonomy, which many MEPs and the Commissioner-designate agreed is even more strategic to pursue after the US elections. With this aim, DIGITAL SME stands ready to work with the new Commission and MEPs on securing digital sovereignty for Europe!

Very interesting data about #digitalSMEs in the UK: ✅ Over 191.000 active companies in 2023 ✅ Digital SMEs have almost doubled in the last decade ✅ They employ over 700.000 people ✅ Over 70% are in software Statistical data from EU countries are fragmented, or just not available. There are, however, many similarities with the data from the UK. Overall, #techSMEs are a driving force of growth, skilled employment and innovation.
