We foster cooperation among electricity transmission system operators in Europe
About us
ENTSO-E, the European Network of Transmission System Operators, represents 39 electricity transmission system operators (TSOs) from 35 countries across Europe, thus extending beyond EU borders. ENTSO-E was established and given legal mandates by the EU’s Third Package for the Internal Energy Market in 2009, which aims at further liberalising the gas and electricity markets in the EU. Due to unbundling and the liberalisation of the energy market, the transmission system has become the meeting place in which the various players interact. ENTSO-E members share the objective of completing and ensuring the optimal functioning of the internal energy market. They also support the ambitious European energy and climate agenda. Through deliverables such as long-term network development plans (TYNDPs), pan-European network codes, coordination of research and development plans, EU-wide system adequacy, etc, ENTSO-E is contributing to building one of the world’s largest integrated electricity market, the benefits of which will not only be felt by all those in the energy sector, but also by Europe’s overall economy, today and into the future.

📢 ENTSO-E and EU DSO Entity are presenting the work plan for 𝐃𝐒𝐎/𝐓𝐒𝐎 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 in 2025. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭? 🤔 As reported in the #GridActionPlan, ENTSO-E and EU DSO Entity are requested to work together to promote uptake of smart grid, network efficiency and innovative technologies. 📖 We have agreed to develop a joint repository of the technologies available in this context with application examples and level of readiness ➡️ This will be the 𝐃𝐒𝐎/𝐓𝐒𝐎 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚. We view this as an important task which will increase the visibility of existing technologies to enhance deployment of #smartgrids, increase grid utilisation and ensure security of supply in Europe. 🔷 The 𝐃𝐒𝐎/𝐓𝐒𝐎 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 will describe known technologies the #systemoperators can apply. It will also describe different use cases and applications around Europe where it already exists, so that all system operators can see what others do, exchange #knowledge and eventually implement new technologies in their own grid. 🔷 The new platform will also be open for stakeholders’ support, where specific applications and use cases can be submitted. Submitted applications will be reviewed by the associations according to transparent guidelines. 🤝 We look forward to further work and cooperation to make the 𝐃𝐒𝐎/𝐓𝐒𝐎 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 the best version yet! Thanks to all engaged stakeholders in the planning stage in which we look forward to future collaboration. Thank you CurrENT Europe, E.DSO, Eurelectric, T&D Europe , & European Commission. 📢 ENTSO-E’s Position on Anticipatory Investments Today, ENTSO-E participated in a Workshop organized by DG ENER on Anticipatory Investments, a key topic introduced by the Electricity Market Design Reform. This was a great opportunity for us to present our newly adopted position on the topic. While grid investments are typically covered by long-standing EU and national regulatory frameworks, anticipatory investments bring new opportunities and challenges for TSOs. In our position paper, we: ✔️ Define anticipatory investments ✔️ Discuss the opportunities and risks involved and propose potential mitigation measures ✔️ Identify key principles to help the development of the European Commission's upcoming guidelines We are excited about the European Commission’s forthcoming guidance following the Grid Action Plan and look forward to engaging with policymakers, regulators, and stakeholders to ensure a strong, resilient energy future. 📑 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/eGYr5CZY #EnergyTransition #ElectricityGrid #AnticipatoryInvestments #ENTSOE #Collaboration

The energy transition will be supported also through careful assessment of system needs for flexibility. ENTSO-E publishes a study that looks at the evolution of system flexibility needs through 2030 and beyond. Flexibility plays a crucial role in integrating renewable energy sources in the power system by managing the variability of electricity production and demand. Through this report, ENTSO-E leverages its members' experience in operating the electricity system and their knowledge of adequacy and planning studies to provide a quantification of flexibility needs across the Member States 🇪🇺 to initiate discussion and build further expertise on the topic. The key insights from this study are outlined below: 🔢 Pan-European flexibility needs linked to generation and demand variability are projected to double between 2025 and 2033 across all examined timeframes. ⏱️ The need for short-duration flexibility and ramping capabilities is expected to roughly double by 2030. This need varies according to country size and generation mix. 🌧️ Prolonged shortages in variable renewables generation are expected to have regional impacts, affecting multiple neighbouring zones simultaneously, heightening the risk of system stress and reducing the mitigation effect of interconnections. 🌍 Interconnectors will play a crucial role in mitigating flexibility needs across various timeframes, except during prolonged shortages in variable renewables generation that affect multiple countries.
