📄𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗣𝗨𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 by Francesca Colli "Climate Policy Integration and Von der Leyen 2.0: Climate Advocacy in Changing Time" EGMONT - Royal Institute for International Relations * The 2nd Ursula von der Leyen Commission starts on a much more sober footing. Farmers’ protests around Europe & the “green backlash” make it a more difficult time for climate policy, and those advocating for it * Although the new European Commission structure indicates a willingness to keep with the #GreenDeal and climate action, there is a “worrying lack of clarity on who calls the shots” on key issues * Both academic research and experience show that integrating climate into different policy fields runs the risk that climate concerns are minimized compared to other issues * Advocating requires flexibility: the ability to understand different viewpoints, be able to speak the same language as partners and perhaps even the willingness to compromise * Strengthening the work on climate change as watchdogs and enforcers of existing policy, but will be vital if the European Union is to reach its climate targets *#Climate and #environmental advocates should continue pushing for integration of more than just climate and energy concerns. Emissions are now integrated into competitiveness and growth but others are not *Ultimately, integrating climate and environmental concerns into EU #policy has the potential to lead to better policies that can tackle the interconnected crises that the EU faces. About us
EGMONT – The Royal Institute for International Relations is an independent think-tank based in Brussels. Its interdisciplinary research is conducted in a spirit of total academic freedom. Drawing on the expertise of its own research fellows, as well as that of external specialists, both Belgian and foreign, it provides analysis and suggests international policy options that are meant to be as operational as possible. Benefiting from the role acquired by Brussels in the global arena and from the prestigious setting of the Egmont Palace, the Institute offers an ideal forum to visiting Heads of State, Heads of government, representatives of international organisations, foreign ministers and other political figures. Conferences, colloquia and seminars nurture the work of the research fellows. They also give participants the opportunity to exchange views with other specialists and with a well-informed public made up of representatives of the political, economic and academic spheres, the media and civil society. Along with research and meetings, the Institute has also developed specialised training activities, both in Brussels and abroad. It can, on request, offer specific programmes for visiting and resident diplomats and foreign professionals. Closer collaboration with other research centres, both in Belgium and in the rest of Europe and beyond, has resulted in a growing number of joint conferences and in more structured cooperation on research and publications. It has proved to be mutually beneficial and enriching.

🌍 The Arctic – Belgium’s Role in Shaping Its Future ❄️ Today, EGMONT - Royal Institute for International Relations hosted a dynamic conference focusing on Belgium’s strategic role in shaping the future of the Arctic. Experts and policymakers gathered to discuss Belgium's national, European, and international contributions to this crucial region, while also spotlighting the need for Belgium’s first Arctic Policy. 📌 Key Highlights: Opening remarks by Pol De Witte, Director General of EGMONT, who opened the conference by setting the scene, outlining the role Belgium plays in the Arctic and underscoring Egmont’s continued work on this topic. Keynote Speeches: Inspiring talks from Ambassador Véronique Petit Ministry of Foreign Affairs Belgium, Jasper Pillen, Jean-Pascal van Ypersele, and Kestutis Sadauskas European Commission , emphasizing the Arctic's significance for climate action, global cooperation, and innovation. I had the pleasure of moderating the first panel on Climate, Research, and Innovation, featuring thought-provoking insights from Frank Pattyn, François Massonnet, Wieter Boone VLIZ - Flanders Marine Institute, and Jill De Visscher APECS Belgium - Association of polar early career scientists Belgium. Together we explored Belgium’s pioneering role in polar research and its contributions to climate science. Panel 2: Economic Interests, International Cooperation, and Security Moderated by Marie Anne Coninsx, featuring Bernard Gilliot, Honorary President at VBO FEB, Pieter-Jan "PJ" Provoost at Agoria, Geneviève Brisson at Délégation générale du Québec à Bruxelles (DGQB), and Kurt Engelen at Royal Higher Institute for Defence, this session highlighted the geopolitical and economic stakes of the Arctic, stressing the need for sustainable and secure international engagement. 📄𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗣𝗨𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 by #JeanLouisDeBrouwer " #Transnationalism : a New Way of Thinking about Migration? " * The Transnationalist hypothesis illustrates the extent to which migration, is a structuring factor in #InternationalRelations and therefore influences the relative autonomy of state actors in a given context * #Migration is one of those flows that encircle the actions of states and whose growing power, leads us to measure the limits of a classic conception of #Sovereignty * Migration, which states claim to be regaining control over, is a structuring factor in international relations and therefore influences the relative autonomy of state actors in a given context * Placing #MigrationManagement among the priorities of #ForeignPolicy implicitly enshrines this #Interdependence: the billiard ball model and the cobweb model * The European Commission finding itself in a weak position tried to emerge from it by proposing a ‘new pact’ on immigration and asylum which introduces a complex system that will take time and significant resources * This is creating new forms of dependence at a time when the European Union is seeking to ensure its #StrategicAutonomy, which is essential if it is to consolidate its position in a world system in transition 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 👉 https://bit.ly/3Ze8cQU #MigrationPolicy #GlobalGovernance #EUForeignPolicy #AsylumPolicy #StateSovereignty #ImmigrationReform #EU

📄𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗣𝗨𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 by Victor De Decker "Trump brings sledgehammer to China and the dollar ¨ EGMONT - Royal Institute for International Relations * Why should the dollar be the world reserve currency?’ This challenging question was posed by a young Republican senator from Ohio, in the spring of 2023, to Jerome Powell, chairman of the Federal Reserve Board * In January, Trump will again be sworn in as president of the United States of America. He will be flanked by the same senator from Ohio: JD Vance * To translate an organised depreciation of the dollar into a coherent policy, Trump will depend not only on his #trade team but also on a cooperative Federal Reserve * Any intentional depreciation is out of the question for the Fed chair Jérôme Powell, dutifully abiding his twin-mandate of price stability and maximum #employment * This creates a remarkable power struggle: while Trump targets #Beijing as his biggest economic rival, ironically, his closest opponent is closer to home in the #Eccles Building. 📄𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗣𝗨𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 by #SvenBiscop "EU Strategy 2025-2029: We Have the Instruments, Now Set the Objectives" * An instrument is not a #policy. At the start of a new #European legislature, the #EU should take the time for a strategic review * The reality is that the structure of world politics is not new: #multipolarity is its natural state * The fact that another power is rising is not problematic per se – it all depends on why and how they use their power * The world is not bipolar – neither the powers nor the other states are aligned in two mutually exclusive #blocs * World politics is not a confrontation between #democracy and #autocracy – when the national interest demands it, states (including EU Member States) cooperate with any other state * The rules-based order is not defunct – powers are competing for positions in the United Nations rather than building a parallel system * We are not in a permanent “grey zone” between #war and #peace – #deterrence still works, so the great powers do not go to war against each other * #GrandStrategy is the agenda of the European Commission as a whole, the President and #HR included, only if the European Union realises that this strategy will carry any weight 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 👉 https://bit.ly/49cemph #Geopolitics #EUGrandStrategy #SvenBiscop #strategy #competence
