📢 On 2 December EASSH issued a joint statement together with 13 other R&I stakeholders to urge the European Commission, European Parliament and EU Member States to endorse the crucial role of SSH in #FP10. Together we call for: 1️⃣ A European funding programme for #research and innovation that: (a) places researchers representing all disciplines at the heart of all aspects of its decision-making processes; (b) is inclusive of all disciplines; and (c) invests more in #SSH research that encourages #innovation, shapes markets and environments for sustainable transformation and societal well-being. 2️⃣ Strengthening the full integration of SSH disciplines in the implementation of EU R&I investments. 3️⃣ Dedicated funding for SSH in FP10 to address the major threats and opportunities of Europe, from innovation to sustainable and inclusive growth. EASSH Director, Gabi Lombardo PhD states: "Research in the humanities and social sciences is foundational for strong European institutions. Disciplines providing critical insights into human behaviour, societal dynamics, and cultural contexts, have the capacity to shape critical innovative processes and effective policies. To maintain European leadership, we need an ambitious research funding programme for SSH with #researchers in the driving seat." ✍️ Signatories: AURORA, Coimbra Group, EASSH, ECIU, ERUA-European Reform University Alliance , EUniWell - European University for Well-Being, Federation of Finnish Learned Societies, ISE, League of European Research Universities (LERU), NORCE Norwegian Research Centre , OPERAS Research Infrastructure, SSH-raad (Social Sciences & Humanities), UNICA - Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe, YERUN - Young European Research Universities. 🙏🏿 Thank you everyone for pulling together and making this paper into a strong position for the SSH! 👓 Read the position paper: https://lnkd.in/d7v44XP6

14 large umbrella organisations are calling for a robust programme of funding for research in SSH in FP10. See our position paper EASSH – European Alliance for Social Sciences and Humanities
Prosperous and Competitive Europe: A truly interdisciplinary FP10 At this critical moment in history, the EU needs to fully endorse research in the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), the European comparative advantage in global science. In 2025, Pillar 2 of Horizon Europe, Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness, is already showing commitment by increasing the budget for research areas within democratic governance, cultural heritage and social inclusion. Knowledge generation from the SSH is essential to effectively feed the ongoing public debate from governance to ethical and sustainable technological development. FP10, the next EU Research & Innovation Framework Programme, has promising opportunities to build on the SSH integration from the former programmes to strengthen the backbone of an innovative and competitive Europe. With this joint statement, our associations as key stakeholders of research and innovation urge the European Commission, European Parliament and EU Member States to lay the groundwork for a value-driven Europe. We strongly believe that this will be achieved by endorsing the crucial role of SSH in FP10. Therefore, we call for: 1. A European funding programme for research and innovation that: (a) places researchers representing all disciplines at the heart of all aspects of its decision-making processes; (b) is inclusive of all disciplines; and (c) invests more in SSH research that encourages innovation, shapes markets and environments for sustainable transformation and societal well-being. 2. Strengthening the full integration of SSH disciplines in the implementation of EU R&I investments. 3. Dedicated funding for SSH in FP10 to address the major threats and opportunities of Europe, from innovation to sustainable and inclusive growth. An excellent and very timely workshop to frame SSAH in the innovation and competitiveness debate with the contribution of research to make a better world. Discussions included non-monetary metrics of innovation which benefits people and societies, but also data analysis and creativity, design that support a wide range of industries in marketing, design and new products. Research in SSAH also provides the contents to make innovation like generative AI functional and effective, we only need to expand the research results databases to include results from non-English language and different disciplines. The workshop cleverly showcase how non-technological research has high value, not just in monetary terms but also in impact on wellbeing. Proud to have been part of this workshop and EASSH – European Alliance for Social Sciences and Humanities is looking forward to support further the unit on research valorisation to produce their report for people prosperity.
Today, I had the privilege of opening the workshop 'Shaping Europe’s future: Knowledge Valorisation of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts (SSAH) for societal impact and human-centred innovation', co-organised with the Universities Denmark. This vibrant event highlights the growing recognition that SSAH disciplines play a pivotal in addressing global challenges. Research in these fields provides essential insights that complement other innovations, enabling sustainable solutions and driving societal progress. Building on the EU’s Guiding Principles for Knowledge Valorisation, we now have a framework to translate research results into tangible benefits. With Codes of Practice on intellectual asset management, standardisation, co-creation, and citizen engagement already in place, we are working towards a multidisciplinary collaboration that integrates SSAH disciplines better into the innovation landscape. President Ursula von der Leyen’s vision for a European Research Area Act, anchored in the “fifth freedom” of free movement of researchers, knowledge, and technology, aligns perfectly with this goal. Reports by Mario Draghi and Enrico Letta emphasize the importance of breaking down silos and fostering cross-border, cross-disciplinary collaborations to unlock Europe’s full potential. At the workshop, participants explore inspiring case studies and exchanged best practices on creating societal value from SSAH research. The insights will culminate in an outcome paper, providing a foundation for future policies and practices. This conversation is only the beginning. By bridging disciplines, fostering innovation, and amplifying the impact of SSAH research, we can shape a more inclusive and sustainable future for Europe. Thank you to all the participants, speakers, and co-organisers for making this event a success! ✨ EASSH believes that we can improve the design of the next framework programme #FP10. Our 5 key recommendations are: 1️⃣ We require a commitment to collect new information during the proposal submission process and the project implementation phase that will enable and support better ‘research-on-research’ methods. 2️⃣ Data should be made publicly available to allow #research-on-research teams to provide further insights and develop new methods. 3️⃣ The system of flagging does produce a positive effect to integrating more #SSH. 4️⃣ We recommend that the Commission examine the processes to draft calls and select projects. This is crucial considering the relevance of SSH in shaping markets and environments for societal well-being. 5️⃣ Programme evaluation requires similar integration of SSH expertise. 📄Full paper: https://lnkd.in/evCdA9VV 🙏 Please help us spread the word!
