A defining moment for cooperatives worldwide: The Launch of IYC 2025 Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India officially launched the United Nations International Year of Cooperatives 2025 in a historic moment at #ICANewDelhi2024. This is especially significant as India, with its strong cooperative movement, takes center stage as the host of the ICA Global Cooperative Conference for the first time in 130 years. A proud moment for cooperatives in India and the rest of the world The last time the world celebrated the International Year of Cooperatives was in 2012, exactly 12 years ago. Highlights from the launch include: - Speeches from global leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself, and leading cooperators celebrating the transformative role of cooperatives - The unveiling of a commemorative stamp for IYC 2025 - The opening of the ICA Cooperative Haat-Expo, showcasing cooperative innovation This launch sets the stage for a year dedicated to amplifying the cooperative movement’s impact on communities worldwide and how cooperatives build a better world. The workshop on "Textile Cooperatives as an Alternative Response to Global Demands" highlighted how cooperatives in the textile sector are leading the way towards a more sustainable and people-centred circular economy. Here are some key takeaways: 🔹 #Sustainability: Textile cooperatives show that ethical sourcing and circular production models are not just possible but impactful—linking environmental care with local empowerment. The #impact is #glocal, addressing multiple environmental, economic and social challenges. 🔹 #Cultural Heritage: Coops like Manos del Uruguay and herder cooperatives in Mongolia are showcasing how cooperatives contribute to the #creativeconomy, as they preserve and promote cultural identity 🔹 #Collaboration is Key: Across regions, cooperatives are proving that collaboration within and between #valuechains (coop2coop) strengthens resilience and expands market access. 🔹 #Challenges: Admin burdens like #certification remain a hurdle, especially for smaller coops, but solutions like capacity building and standard support are paving the way.
