📢 This #InternationalDemocracyDay, civil society calls on EU leaders to take decisive actions to foster a vibrant civic space, uphold democracy and safeguard fundamental rights. The open letter #EUCivicSpaceNow, initiated by Civil Society Europe and backed by 415 civil society organisations —from 26 Member States and 4 EU candidate countries— is addressed to the upcoming Polish, Danish, and Cypriot Presidencies of the Council of the European Union, as well as the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Parliament. The letter outlines concrete actions to promote democracy, enable, support and protect civil society, strengthen civil dialogue and protect human rights amid growing concerns over the erosion of democracy in the EU. Specifically, it calls for prioritising: 1️⃣ A European Civil Society Strategy 2️⃣ A strong mandate for a Commission Vice President responsible for democracy, civic space and civil dialogue 3️⃣ The adoption of a Civil Dialogue Agreement 4️⃣ Empowering funding policies 5️⃣ A European Democracy Semester 6️⃣ A stronger role of the Fundamental Rights Agency Read the letter, share and support our cause! 👉 https://bit.ly/3zjaaXe

The European Coordination for Civil Society Organisations
About us
Civil Society Europe (CSE) brings together 22 European networks of civil society organisations (CSO) working towards regenerating the European project around the shared values of Equality, Solidarity, Inclusiveness and Democracy. Our main objectives: to facilitate and enable horizontal and vertical dialogue between European civil society organisations and policy-makers and help strengthening CSOs in their activities and relations with the institutions. The organisation was founded in December 2014 in Rome at the close of the European Year of citizens as an initiative of organisations that had worked together in the European Year of Citizens Alliance. Its membership has grown since then to encompass the various sectors of civil society. CSE has been established as an international not for profit organisation under Belgian law since June 2016. CSE is funded through membership fees and contributions by its members. CSE is an independent voice promoting a space for structured civil dialogue and citizen’s participation at all levels.

How do we protect human rights defenders and civil society organisations? 🤔 Together with Civil Society Europe (CSE) and nine other NGOs, we’re publishing two papers focusing on how to #ProtectRightsDefenders and CSOs in Europe. In the first paper, we look at what currently exists (and what doesn’t). For nearly a decade, the EU has had guidelines for protecting HRDs and CSOs from outside Europe. But nothing similar exists for those that are *inside* Europe. In the second paper, we explore the pathways to fill those gaps. We look into the different, often complementary options for a protection ecosystem for Europe In the months ahead, we need a concerted effort to build on these papers and work towards an effective protection ecosystem for Europe, where human rights defenders are confident they will be protected.
