On top of the article's conclusions, I would like to add that the motto "green or greed" used in the speeches of some NGOs reveals that environmental protection is not the only issue; these groups also challenge existing socio-economic models (the "greed" part), and this is a call for developing novel (better and fairer) social contracts.
The European Union is developing initiatives such as the Critical Raw Materials Act to ensure sustainable and affordable access to critical raw materials, while upholding environmental and social standards. However, domestic mining presents challenges as some deposits are situated within environmentally protected areas, necessitating a balanced approach between resource extraction and conservation efforts. This article delves into the public narratives surrounding mining projects in five European countries: Portugal, France, Slovakia, Italy, and the Czech Republic. The analysis unveils differing perspectives along two main divides: security of supply versus environmental protection. While policymakers stress the importance of increasing domestic mineral production to reduce import dependence, environmentalists and local communities voice concerns over the ecological impacts of mining. These narratives underscore a fear of change among local populations, driven by scepticism about prescribed solutions and a perceived disconnect between top-down directives and bottom-up concerns. The analysis highlights the necessity for inclusive policymaking, effective communication, and a nuanced approach that aligns the EU’s sustainability goals with the legitimate aspirations of local communities. 🔊 From the 9th until the 13th of December 2024, CIRAN proudly participated in another edition of the #RawMaterialsWeek held at the Le Plaza Hotel in Brussels. Organised by the European Commission – Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG Growth), the Raw Materials Week is the largest policy event on raw materials, yearly organised since 2016. It attracted over 1,000 participants from industry, administration, civil society, research and academia to discuss the #future of #rawmaterials in #Europe. 🗣️ CIRAN's participation in the 2024 RMW has been twofold: 🌱 Minja Marijanski, Environmental Specialist and Project Manager from our Consortium partner organisation Proman Consulting, was invited by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe - UNECE Sustainable Energy to present CIRAN’s work at the 7th Event on the United Nations Framework Classification for Resources (#UNFC) and the United Nations Resource Management System (#UNRMS) 🌍 W. Eberhard Falck, one of CIRAN's coordinators from the International Raw Materials Observatory, was a guest speaker at the START - HE PROJECT workshop with Filipe Neves (LNEG), a Side Event at the RMW gathering experiences from other projects EU-funded #research and #innovation projects working on #CRM #sustainability #SLO #supplychains: GSEU - Geological Service for Europe - Francesco Pizzocolo FutuRaM project – GeoZS - Geological Survey of Slovenia CRM-geothermal – Katrin Kieling (Helmholtz-Centre Potsdam - German Research Centre GFZ) SUPREEMO Horizon Europe – Arne Petter Ratvik (SINTEF) REESOURCE – Carlos Escudero-Oñate (Institute for Energy Technology) REPTiS – Artem Yarovinsky (VELTA LLC) CIRAN is proud to be part of these meaningful discussions, contributing to the global dialogue on #CRMs and #sustainability. Events like the EU Raw Materials Week reinforce the importance of innovation, cooperation across projects and initiatives, and the need for forward-thinking approaches in navigating the challenges of balancing natural resource management, circularity, economic growth, and sustainability. 👉 Read all about it in our News section! We were delighted to see VECTOR recognised as one of the #EUHorizon projects contributing towards the application of #UNFC within the critical raw materials space in presentations during the United Nations Tools for Resource Management Session at EU Raw Materials Week today, co-organised by UNECE, and GSEU - Geological Service for Europe and FutuRaM projects. VECTOR research contributes to a greater understanding of social, environmental and geoscience challenges to #mining within #Europe, helping to provide key insights as to how these integrate within UNFC assessments.
