Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming the Brussels Network of Women in Aviation to our HQ. 👩✈️ This informal network, led by Vanessa RULLIER-FRANCAUD from the Aerospace, Security and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD), brought together over 100 women from across the aviation industry to exchange ideas, showcase their expertise, and gain insight into EUROCONTROL’s work. At EUROCONTROL, we are dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive working environment and we work with a number of partner organisations to promote diversity, equity & inclusion in the aviation ecosystem. The event provided an inspiring platform to share our ongoing DEI initiatives and highlight the critical role we play in supporting European aviation. 💬 “EUROCONTROL has continuously changed, and I believe that we can best improve productivity with the right blend of people and by integrating different people with different abilities to produce the best results,” said Iacopo Prissinotti, setting the tone for the discussions. Céline Shakouri-Dias, our Director People, also pointed out a historic milestone we achieved recently: 💬 “For the first time in the Agency’s history, we have achieved gender balance among EUROCONTROL Directors.” She underlined how “we also want to ensure a more diverse representation in other managerial positions.” The day’s highlights included the presentation by Yolanda Portillo - accompanied by part of her team -  offering insights into the vital role played by our Network Manager Operations Centre (NMOC) in managing European air traffic. Participants also toured our state-of-the-art operations building, where they learnt about innovations such as: 🔹 Our weather desk set to expand for next summer to improve responses to adverse weather events, 🔹 The future space desk to manage monitor launches and re-entries and coordinate airspace use effectively. It was great to connect with this incredible network of female experts and reaffirm our dedication to advancing DEI across the aviation sector. Together, we can continue to build a more inclusive and innovative future for aviation. #DiversityInAviation #WomenInAviation #EUROCONTROL #DiversityEquityInclusion #AviationLeadership #Innovation

  • Research and technology (R&T) are the engines driving Europe’s aeronautics sector. To stay competitive, sustainable, and at the forefront of innovation, the 10th European Framework Programme (FP10) must deliver a dedicated funding approach for civil aeronautics. Civil aeronautics is not just about mobility; it’s a cornerstone of Europe’s economy and society. It powers technological breakthroughs, creates jobs, and strengthens strategic autonomy. FP10 is pivotal to preserving Europe’s leadership in aeronautics and achieving ambitious targets like the Digital European Sky and Destination 2050. With focused investment, FP10 can foster cross-border collaboration, support excellence in R&T, and cement Europe's position as a global aeronautics leader. 📄 Read ASD’s recent Position Paper on FP10: https://lnkd.in/eewKFZfD

  • Can Europe lead the global race toward sustainable aviation? This week, the European Civil Aeronautics Summit 2024 gathered in Brussels to reflect on the aviation sector's role in the EU’s climate goals, the European Green Deal and the Clean Industrial Deal. Guillaume Faury, CEO of Airbus & ASD President, opened the summit emphasising the sector’s importance to European innovation and prosperity. “This is one of the few sectors where Europe is a world leader – something we must cherish, protect, and support.” A high-level panel titled "A European Industrial Deal to Complement the Green Deal" featured Faury, Klaus Schneider (Liebherr Aerospace and Transportation), Roberto Cingolani (Leonardo), and Beatriz Yordi (DG CLIMA). The discussion centred on regulatory challenges and the innovation gap. Roberto Cingolani expressed hope that European policies would remain technology-neutral, avoiding favouritism toward specific technologies. Faury and Schneider both called for streamlined regulations to maintain competitiveness, with Schneider noting the cascading impact of excessive rules on supply chains. Beatriz Yordi wrapped up the panel with optimism, expressing confidence in the potential for global solutions and continued multilateral efforts to address climate change. An interview with Florian Guillermet, Executive Director of EASA, explored challenges in the regulatory landscape in relation to safety, sustainability, and innovation. “We can never assume that because it was safe yesterday, it will be safe today and tomorrow,” he said. He explained the balance regulators need to strike: "If we set regulatory requirements too early, we could stifle innovation. If we come in too strong at the wrong time, there won’t be space for innovation. If we’re too late, we won’t give the market enough visibility." A panel on "The Future of European Civil Aviation Research" brought together experts from industry and research. Rosalinde van der Vlies (DG RTD) stressed the value of disruptive innovations to decarbonise aviation. Eric Dalbiès (Safran) praised the leverage effect of public–private partnerships, which amplify research capabilities by encouraging consortia formation and supply chain inclusion. Axel Krein (Clean Aviation) explored hydrogen’s potential as a scalable alternative fuel, while Gary Way (Rolls-Royce) emphasised the industry’s commitment to safety in deploying revolutionary technologies. Jose Vicente de los Mozos (Indra Sistemas) highlighted challenges in transitioning to digital airspace systems, likening it to “replacing the engine of a plane while the plane is flying.” Christophe Grudler MEP closed the summit with a call for Europe to defend its leadership in aviation, prioritising clean aircraft development, SAF production, and supply chain resilience. ✨ The exchanges that took place this week during the European Civil Aviation Summit were nothing less than sparkling. The event organised by Aerospace, Security and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD) and European Business Summits brought on stage many of very close allies of Clean Aviation 🤝  from Rosalinde van der Vlies to Eric Dalbiès (Safran), from Florian Guillermet (EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency) to Andreas Boschen (SESAR Joint Undertaking), from Guillaume Faury (Airbus) to Gary Way (Rolls-Royce).   🔭 As we look ahead to Framework Programme 10 (FP10), our ED Axel Krein emphasised a critical goal: drastically shortening the aircraft development cycle in Europe from 8 to 5 years. The key ingredients for success? Boost competitiveness through significant investment, and bridge the valley of death so as to close the gap with full-scale prototyping ✈️   Some take-aways: 💚 The sector is committed to decarbonise. It is our license to grow. R&I is a key component to reach decarbonisation goals. 🇪🇺 90% of aviation R&I still happens at national level, we cannot afford as a Union to be fragmented. Better integration is needed at all stages, from R&I to end-of-life, to maximise efficiency. ✅ 6️⃣ A close collaboration with EASA is necessary to ensure that projects' consortia are targeting CRL6 (Certification Readiness Level) by the same time they will deliver projects at TRL6. 💫 All players involved must break silos to favour an ecosystem approach (manufacturers, airlines, airports, fuel providers and policymakers). The way forward for a common strategy shared by Member States and the European Commission? Implementation, implementation, implementation! #ECAS2024 #AviationInnovation #Sustainability #AviationFuture
