🌿 Agroecology Europe at the Heart of CAP Discussions 🌿 We are pleased to announce that Agroecology Europe is actively contributing to two newly launched Thematic Groups by the EU CAP Network. Representing our association are board members Ole Ostermann and Cristina Laurenti. 🔸 Enhancing Biodiversity on Farmland for Improved Resilience Ole Ostermann brings his expertise to this group, which focuses on how policy schemes and their implementation can better #support farmers in promoting biodiversity. The goal is to enhance the sustainability of farming, #restore habitats, and build more #resilient agricultural systems. 🔸 Gen Z: Leading Generational Renewal in Farming Cristina Laurenti represents Agroecology Europe in this group, addressing how CAP measures can better support the next generation of farmers. With #youngfarmers leading the discussion, this platform ensures #youthperspectives are front and center in shaping the future of agriculture. For Agroecology Europe, these TGs provide a key opportunity to contribute to EU-level policy discussions and to share the work of our #WorkingGroup on Biodiversity and Youth Network. On Wednesday 11th December, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen joined the EU Youth Policy Dialogue organized by the European Commission #DGAgri. This event brought together 25 #youthnetworks from across #Europe to discuss the #future of farming, #food, and rural areas. We are proud that our Youth Network was selected to represent young agroecological voices. Cristina Laurenti (Coordinator of the Youth Network) and Jesse Donham-Buratti (Coordinator of the Intersectionality Working Group) ensured that #agroecology was part of the conversation. On the critical topic of generational renewal, we emphasized: 🍃 Competitiveness is crucial but must be #just, avoiding benefits for the few at the expense of others. 🍃#Sustainability requires a balanced focus on environmental, social, and economic dimensions. 🍃Support for #small-scale farming is essential, especially for new entrants who often face significant challenges. 🍃#Community-based markets, such as CSAs and cooperatives, are vital for creating resilient market opportunities and fostering rural development. 🍃The conclusion from the Strategic Dialogue is clear: business as usual is no longer an option. Agroecology provides a #science-based, #grounded pathway for a more just and sustainable agri-food system. 🍃We need increased opportunities for #training, #consultancy, advisory services, and #peereducation focused on agroecology 🍃Youth voices must be included in all decision-making processes. A youth advisory board should be #institutionalized and supported, recognizing the financial and time constraints young people face. We are grateful for this opportunity and look forward to continuing the conversation. Most importantly, we are eager to see these inputs translated into tangible #actions for a brighter, more sustainable future! At #EUagriFoodDays, agriculture stakeholders and representatives discuss the future of food & farming. We welcome new EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen into his new position and hope he mill make sure: 👩🌾 Farmers get fair prices for their produce 🌿 CAP supports a transition to agroecology 🥗 All consumers have access to affordable, healthy food And while participants discuss the future of farming, we brought activists from across Europe to share the harsh, often unheard reality of rural communities living near animal factories - facing air and water pollution, intimidation, health risks. 🐷 The EU’s Vision for the Future of Agriculture must prioritise a transition away from intensive animal farming. Stop factory farm expansion, enforce EU laws across all member states and protect the planet - putting people before the profits of big multinationals. 📜 OPEN LETTER FOR CLIMATE ACTION AND JUST TRANSITION IN AGRICULTURE 🌊 Together with over 20 civil society organisations, we call on Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera Rodríguez and Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra to put #climateaction and a just transition for EU #agriculture at the core of their work. Our recommendations: 1️⃣ Lay out a #climate pathway for the #EU agri-food sector with a binding and ambitious emission reduction target that keeps the EU on track to meet the Paris Agreement goal while exploring a consumption-based climate target that addresses the EU’s impact beyond its borders. 2️⃣ Develop a strategy for shifting animal #farming away from industrial models that harm our environment, communities, animals, and health. 3️⃣ Support a #justtransition with accessible funding for #farmers who want to change their business model for improved #sustainability and #resilience for the future. As the Strategic Dialogue consensus report concluded “The time for change is now”, and we look forward to working together also with Christophe Hansen, EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Food and Jessika Roswall, EU Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy. 🌎 The Anteprima di #TerraMadre gathering in Rome brought together 150 young activists from across Italy, organized by SlowFood Italia. The central theme of this event was #regeneration, focusing on reshaping the future of #food and environmental sustainability through joy and collaboration. Participants, aged 18 to 35, came from #diverse backgrounds, united by their shared vision of a more sustainable world. 🐝 Members of the Agroecology Europe Youth Network participated in the event. Irene Katsaros, a representative, emphasised the need for a “joyous revolution” as a way to tackle the burdens placed on younger generations. AEEU’s objectives were to connect these #young voices with #agroecology practices and principles, aiming to foster an ecosystem-based approach to #foodsystems that respects natural and human #ecosystems alike... 📌 Read on what we learned and the impact of the conversations: https://lnkd.in/dTUKcvAv
