I recently saw a Semrush hiring post for freelance editors. There was an editing test at the end, and no test has ever made me so happy! I didn't take the test; I didn't want to apply for the position. But what I found pleasantly surprising was that the test focused on an aspect of editing that is often overlooked but absolutely crucial: fact-checking. Instead of solely assessing the candidate's ability to polish the language or improve the structure, Semrush's test challenged the editor to identify and correct inaccurate information. Here's the sentence they provided: "A blog post that demonstrates E-A-T and has clear headers (also called H2s), title tags, meta descriptions, meta keywords and other SEO tags will satisfy Google and help users navigate your site." At first glance, the sentence seems to be information-heavy, and that’s what needs to be changed. But with a closer look, you might notice that some of the information is not entirely accurate. (Can you spot it? Find the answer in the comments) The test emphasizes the importance of fact-checking as a critical skill for editors. Fact-checking is a time-consuming and meticulous process that requires: - Thorough research and verification of information - A keen eye for detecting inconsistencies and inaccuracies - The ability to find reliable sources to support or correct claims Unfortunately, many marketers don't fully grasp the effort and time that goes into fact-checking, and as a result, this skill is often overlooked in standard editing tests.
