💡How to add a new component to design system When adding new components to a design system, it's essential to ask the right questions to ensure the component's necessity, usability, and alignment with the overall design principles. Here's a set of key questions I use to guide the process: 1️⃣ Purpose and Need ✔ Is there a genuine need for this component? What problem does it solve? ✔ Are there existing components that can be adapted to fulfill this need? ✔ What are the use cases for this component? Will it be widely used across the system or only for specific use cases? 2️⃣ Alignment with Design Principles ✔ Does this component align with our design system’s principles? (e.g., consistency, simplicity, flexibility) ✔ How will it fit into the visual language and interaction patterns of the existing system? ✔ Are there interaction patterns or visual elements within the design system that influence this component's design? 3️⃣ Functionality and Flexibility ✔ What specific functionality does this component need to support? Are there unique behaviors or interactions? ✔ Is the component flexible enough to accommodate future needs or variations as the design system grows? ✔ How will this component scale across different screen sizes and contexts (e.g., desktop, mobile)? ✔ Will adding this component add complexity to the design system? If so, is it justified? 4️⃣ Usability and Accessibility ✔ Is the component accessible and compliant with accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG AA)? ✔ How will users interact with this component? What usability best practices should be considered? ✔ Does this component work well with assistive technologies, such as screen readers? 5️⃣ Consistency and Reusability ✔ How reusable is this component across different parts of the system? Can it be used in various contexts? ✔ Does this component introduce any redundancies or overlap with existing components? ✔ Are there design tokens, colors, typography, or icons within the system that this component should utilize to stay consistent? 6️⃣ Technical Feasibility and Implementation ✔ What technical challenges might arise in implementing this component? ✔ Are there constraints or dependencies to consider in the codebase? ✔ How will the component be tested? Does it need specific tests for functionality, responsiveness, and accessibility? 7️⃣ Documentation and Maintenance ✔ What documentation is required to ensure designers and developers understand how to craft this component? ✔ How will this component be maintained over time? Who is responsible for updates and bug fixes? 8️⃣ Impact on Design System Users ✔ How will adding this component affect current users of the design system? What changes do they need to introduce in current design to support it? ✔ Are there educational needs for designers and developers (such as training sessions) to adopt this new component? 🖼️ New component decision tree by Luis Ouriach #design #designsystem #ux #uxdesign #ui #uidesign

💡UX Research Canvas   UX Research Canvas is a structured framework proposed by The Fountain Institute that is used to plan, define, and organize UX research activities for a project. 1️⃣ Why This section defines the purpose of the research. Why is it needed? Is there a specific issue or goal driving the need for UX research? 2️⃣ Key questions This outlines the primary questions the research aims to answer. These questions are usually aligned with the project's goals or challenges. 3️⃣ Assumptions List any assumptions that the team already has going into the research. These could be assumptions about user behavior, product functionality, or market expectations based on prior knowledge or research. 4️⃣Type of UX Research There are four main types of UX research that can be conducted: ✔ Exploratory: Used to discover new opportunities, themes, or directions. ✔ Foundational: Helps understand existing products, services, or users. ✔ Evaluative: Focuses on the usability of current products or services. ✔ Generative: Aims to create and test prototypes based on prior knowledge and insights. 5️⃣ Recruitment criteria This section defines who should be included in the UX research. It specifies the criteria for selecting participants, including mandatory and optional characteristics. 6️⃣ UX research methods This details the specific UX research methods that will be used to gather data. Common methods include user interviews, surveys, usability testing, etc. 7️⃣ Key stakeholders Identify the relevant stakeholders involved in the project. Stakeholders could include product owners, developers, marketers, and end-users. 8️⃣ Timeline Specifies the amount of time the research should take, along with any key milestones or dates important to the project. 9️⃣ Hard deliverables This outlines what assets will be produced from the research (e.g., reports, prototypes, presentations) and how they will be shared with the team or stakeholders. 🔟 Success metrics Defines what success looks like for the project. These can be qualitative and quantitative metrics that indicate whether the research objectives have been achieved. At the bottom of the canvas, there's a UX Research Statement  that summarizes the core goal of the research: We will (actionable verb) the (object of the research) so that we can (outcome of the research). This statement can be used to communicate the nature of research to stakeholders. #ux #uxresearch #design #designresearch #productdesign

Avoid confusion. A small guide that explains Brand strategy + Design. 1. Brand Strategy + Developing your brand strategy builds your brand’s foundation, helps you research your target audience, establishes clear positioning and allows you to plan ahead. – The risk is that your brand strategy ends up as a PDF tucked away on your computer. Campaign planning and product development don’t align and are created from a place of urgency and confusion. 2. Design + This is your visual identity. It will either attract customers or it won’t. Consistency is key and absolutely foundational for every touchpoint. – When you develop the design without any strategy, it’s merely decoration and not very sustainable. 3. Brand Strategy + Design + The design is the strategy visualized. Integrating the two combines logic with magic. Campaign planning and product development align and are created from a place of control and clarity. – Few consultants do both brand strategy and design. Many agencies do, but often in different teams. There’s a risk of a lack of alignment and full integration. This is why I focus on offering brand strategy + design combined. Do you want to learn more about how to turn confusion into clarity when building your brand? Feel free to reach out or give me a follow. #brandstrategy #design
