Really great insights and thought leadership during the Australian Institute of Company Directors "Melbourne Directors' Briefing: The Boards Role in Culture" yesterday evening. It was really awesome to hear from truly experienced non-executive directors and board members on the board's role in shaping a company's culture that extends beyond traditional governance to the strategic orchestration of a company's ethos and values. It is crucial for boards to actively engage and activate the cultivation of a culture that fosters innovation, inclusivity, forward-thinking and forward looking mentality and ethical behavior. It becomes critical to acknowledge the need for a paradigm shift from passive oversight to dynamic participation in culture development. I thoroughly enjoyed listening about the connection of culture with a) data analytics and generative AI (great use case on comment analysis), b) the working from home perspective, c) the need for KPIs that are not only backward but mainly forward-looking, d) the purpose and vision, e) the focus on outcomes and trust f) the need to engage cultural issues for long-term impact and g) the organization and its ability to perform, while preventing deterioration. My main take is that boards should leverage their unique position to proactively engage in cultural stewardship so as to ensure that a company's cultural framework resonates across all levels of the organization. This involves not only setting the tone but getting outside of the boardroom so as to embed cultural imperatives into the strategic vision, commit to continuous learning and adaptability, promote culture of resilience and continuous improvement and prioritize psychological safety and employees empowerment. According to Hargraves Institute research, belonging (one of the 6 key elements of healthy collaboration) ensures team members feel valued as part of a larger purpose. AHRI’s latest Quarterly Work Outlook report has highlighted the concerning impact of Australia's skills gap on productivity. The report predicts high turnover to be a key cause of this issue.
