It was great to hear about the promising pipeline of projects planned for the coming years in North and North West Queensland. CopperString is a once-in-a-generation project, and it will connect the North West Minerals Province to the National Electricity Market (NEM) for the first time in Australia’s history. It will enable many other projects, including critical mineral exploration and renewable energy developments. 📣 New WA Bid Contribution Policy for Major Projects 🏠   Western Australia has a record pipeline of major infrastructure projects in the pipeline. Finance has been collaborating with the MBA and tier one and two contractors to explore initiatives aimed at increasing market capacity and competition in WA. 🏨 The Minister for Finance announced today the new Bid Contribution Policy for Non-Residential Major Projects. The policy provides a clear, consistent and transparent approach to providing financial contributions of up to $750,000 towards the bid costs incurred by businesses tendering on eligible construction works valued over $100 million. 💸 This includes contributions on critical projects including hospitals, correctional facilities and cultural buildings. ⛪ Value for money and timely delivery is a priority, that’s why we #collaborated with industry to implement best practice. The original 1928 bridge across the Hotham River in WA’s Wheatbelt was replaced with a new 88 metre structure, built with 1700 cubic metres of concrete and 600 tonnes of steel. Main Roads WA engaged BMD Group for the new $15.2m construction. While the combination of concrete and steel may seem indestructible, both materials require robust protective coatings to maintain integrity and strength. We recommended two proven custom systems, which were applied by coatings specialist Adam Baxter from Nanokote WA: ·      Steel piles were air-sprayed on-site with Dulux® Zincanode 402 for cathodic corrosion resistance, a must for steel spanning waterways ·      Dulux® Durebild STE provided extra barrier protection ·      Dulux® Weathermax HBR created a durable, low maintenance finish with superior gloss and colour retention ·      Concrete components were air-sprayed with Dulux® Durebild STE and finished with Dulux® Weathermax HBR Dulux® Protective Coatings WA State Sales Manager Joel Bock explains why Weathermax HBR is used extensively in infrastructure projects: “It’s a high-performance polyurethane topcoat with anti-graffiti resistance necessary to meet Main Roads Specification 908 requirements and handle repeated exposure to graffiti removal agents, all while retaining colour and gloss to keep assets looking good long term.” Image courtesy of Nanokote WA. A look back to history... The 1998 Williams Report was one of the earliest reviews of the engineering profession in Australia. This report includes the results of a survey of engineering graduates, with some questions similar to those asked of BeLongEng participants. An interesting change over time is the educational background of the graduates' caregivers. In 1987, between 9-20% of the graduates' caregivers had completed a university degree. By 2022, this figure had risen to nearly 46%. Satisfaction with the qualification has also increased significantly, from 70% in 1987 to 90% in 2022.

It's International Women in Engineering Day on Sunday 23 June 2024. It recognises the incredible contribution women engineers are making to the profession and encourages more women and girls to pursue a career in engineering. At La Trobe, Nazanin Feizollah is passionate about engineering. With a background as an architect and industrial designer, she chose La Trobe's Master of Construction and Engineering Management to "gain more information and technical knowledge about construction.” "What excites me most about this course is the opportunity to get real-world experience through industry-based learning placements," she says. Nazanin is also an executive committee member of La Trobe’s Engineering Society, which has helped her to build industry connections. “It has helped me to learn more about the construction and engineering industry and make good connections. Our goal is to create a network between students and engineering professionals, and to bridge the gap between study and work.” Nazanin says that while many things have changed for women in construction and engineering, there are still persistent gender stereotypes in the industry. “When I say I'm studying construction and engineering management, there are still some people who are surprised. Some people think that it's an industry just for men. While this can be frustrating, I think it’s important to acknowledge that many companies are trying to encourage more women to enter the sector.” Her advice to women hoping to enter the industry is to build their self-confidence.  “The most important thing is self-confidence. I like to challenge myself and I love to learn new things. Council will work with the community on a reduced version of the Kerang to Koondrook Rail Trail after environmental constraints impacted the project’s initial concept designs. Council has spent the past two years utilising $500,000 provided by the State Government’s Regional Development Victoria Investment Fast Track Fund and $125,000 from its 2022/2023 Budget to complete planning works for the proposed 22-kilometre cycling and walking trail between Kerang and Koondrook. The project’s initial proposal was to utilise the former tramway route between Kerang and Koondrook as a basis for the trail, however the trail’s proximity to the Ramsar-listed Fosters Swamp east of Kerang and areas of federally-protected endangered grasses has led to a reduction in the length of the trail. As a result of the initial planning, Council will focus on developing an alternative proposal involving a nine-kilometre rail trail between Koondrook and the former Hinkson railway station. Any changes to the project’s scope will need to be approved at a Council meeting, with the project not achievable without significant financial investment by the State and/or Federal governments. AWARD WINNER! 🏆 PSM Upstream Solutions Engineered Crates, Safer Roads 🥇 We are the proud AWARD WINNER of this years Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety WorkSafe WA Work Health and Safety Excellence Awards 2024 in the ‘Best solution to a work health and safety risk' category for our Engineered Structural Preservation Crates. When we founded PSM in 2016 and started preserving, storing, maintaining and packaging critical spares for the resource industry. we quickly came across a problem. Crates that the spares arrived in were substandard, presenting a major HSE risk to those having to handle the damaged crates. We also have learned that there are thousands of incidents on our roads every year, with cargo falling off trucks and putting the lives of the general public in danger. First, we tried to find a supplier of wooden crates that could supply structurally sound crates with a guaranteed Working Load Limit (WLL). To our big surprise, there were none. Realising we had to do this ourselves, we embarked on a journey of engineering, research and development, testing and prototyping to come up with a timber crate that complies with the National Transport Commission’s design guidelines, as well as AS1720.1, the Australian Timber Structures Code. By engineering the design of the crates, taking into account the weight, dimensions, Centre of Gravity (CoG), friction factors and load distribution of the asset on the crate base, we can guarantee a Working Load Limit (WLL) of each crate we manufacture. Lashing points are clearly marked on the outside of the crate to make use of the structural strength of the crate, and anchor points are added internally to securely strap the asset to the crate base. Crates are manufactured using structural timber for all load bearing parts and non-structural timber for all non-critical parts, to keep the costs down. We also issue a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) with each crate, guaranteeing the strength, durability and Working Load Limit (WLL) of our product. We have even thought about re-use by using screws and latches when assembling the crates. Why throw away a perfectly good crate when you can use it again and again over a ten year design life? But most importantly, we have come up with a product that significantly reduces the HSE risk of handling and transporting goods on our roads, keeping people in logistics, transportation, maintenance, as well as the general public out of harm’s way. And that can only be a good thing. CELEBRATING 25 YEARS: ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE AWARD 2013, ENGINEERS AUSTRALIA NEWCASTLE DIVISION As we continue to celebrate 25 years of Delaney Civil, we are looking back on our achievements over the last 25 years. One of our proudest is the Engineering Excellence Award we won in 2013 for the Engineers Australia Newcastle Division. Delaney Civil won this award for our work on the Duffs and Marlee Bridge Replacements project. This project involved the replacement of two timber truss bridges over Dingo Creek, along with roadworks on Bulga Road for the bridge approaches. The two bridges are located approximately 7km northwest of Wingham, on the NSW Mid North Coast. Each bridge replacement took place within a 10-day closure period, with Duffs Bridge actually being reopened on the 7th day of the planned 10-day closure. The innovative design solutions that Delaney Civil implemented on this project include: - Development of identical designs of the two bridges, presenting a significant cost saving - Using variable-sized culvert spans which catered for the difference in bridge length and hydrology requirements - The use of prestressed concrete planks with transverse post tension bars, which do not require an in-situ deck – meaning they are trafficable immediately and reduce closure times It was these innovative design solutions and construction approaches that led to Delaney Civil winning the Engineering Excellence Award for this project! #delaneycivil #constructionindustry #25years #EngineersAustralia #EngineeringExcellence #Award #Bridges

Addressing the complex challenge of mitigating thermal bridging while maintaining structural integrity is a priority for modern construction to achieve the necessary NZBC H1 Energy efficiency compliance. We've been at the fore of this issue, collaborating closely with our clients and architects to develop tailored solutions. Recently, we were fortunate to be invited to a Respond Architects hosted Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects CPD course presented by Thermal Innovations. Thermal Innovations presented their range of products designed to tackle precisely this challenge, and we were grateful to participate in this insightful session. Our recent collaboration with @ThoughtForm Architects highlighted our efforts to deliver on detailing that meet NZBC H1 Energy efficiency requirements while ensuring structural load paths remain intact. By utilising Thermal Innovations products, we've submitted our first consent application, marking a significant milestone in how we achieve this requirement. Thermal Innovations offers Structural Thermal Breaks with exceptional thermal and structural properties, ensuring high compressive strength while meeting the unique needs of each application.

The cost of the Borumba pumped storage hydro project has increased by $4 billion, bringing the total to over $18 billion, according to a new report by Queensland Hydro. The project is also facing significant delays, with completion now projected for July 2035, almost three years later than originally planned. The report indicates there is less than a 1% chance the project will be ready to deliver power by its initial 2030 deadline. It attributes these issues to unrealistic assumptions made during the project’s planning phase under the previous Labor government. Queensland Treasurer and Energy Minister David Janetzki criticized the handling of the project, stating: “Labor’s energy policy was a house of cards waiting to collapse.” He added, “Queensland Hydro’s report showed there was less than a 1% chance of the Borumba Pumped Hydro project being completed on time.” The minister plans to meet with Queensland Hydro today to address the project’s financial, environmental, and stakeholder challenges.
