As we approach the anniversary date of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adoption, it’s an appropriate time to reflect on how we’re tracking. In fact, every year a report is put together by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network - This organisation takes publicly available information and ranks how each state is making action towards the goals. It’s been a busy old time for Bead and Proceed (we’ve been trying to practice more yohaku - a beautiful Japanese concept that we’ve unpacked in a previous Proceed Peptalk… but anyway)! Now we are finally getting on to sharing the latest results and sadly… the stats are not great. Currently, Aotearoa has 6 SDGs that face major challenges, which include: 🔴 Zero Hunger 🔴 Responsible Consumption and Production 🔴 Climate Action 🔴 Life Below Water 🔴 Life on Land 🔴 Partnerships For the Goals 🔙We’re going backwards on Life Below Water And we’re currently sitting at #26 on the SDG Global Rank. Last year, we were at #27, before 23, before that #16 and before that, we were sitting at #11. This doesn’t necessarily mean we’re going backwards as some states have moved ahead and if you had to guess who are in the top three positions…it’s a typical Scandinavian Success Story with Finland at #1, Sweden in #2 and Denmark in #3. However, this isn’t the Olympics. What’s important is actually achieving the goals (rather than where states are ranked) and sadly no state is on track to achieving all 17 by 2030… which is why I left my law job to paint beads for a living. But seriously… I truly am on a mission to educate, engage and inspire action towards the SDGs from school students to business leaders to city councillors to charities. We all have the power to BEAD the change we want to see in the world and to be agents of this positive change. With the anniversary date approaching, ask yourself: how are you, your business, your team, your community making traction towards the SDGs? CONSUMERS AT THE CENTRE OF THE GREEN TRANSITION On 8-9 October 2024, 37 ministers and heads of consumer agencies from 55 countries attended the OECD - OCDE Consumer Policy Ministerial meeting. Australia chaired the meeting and was represented by Catriona Lowe, Deputy Chair of the ACCC. The key outcomes of the meeting included the approval of the Declaration on Protecting and Empowering Consumers in the Digital and Green Transitions. The Declaration contained the following commitments on protecting and empowering consumers in the green transition: ●strengthening consumer protection from misleading, deceptive, and unsubstantiated environmental claims, which thereby also levels the playing field for honest businesses and fosters business incentives to provide more sustainable options; ●empowering consumers by improving their access, including in marketing and through labels, to clear, accurate and easy-to-understand information about the environmental impact of goods and services; ●examining how consumer policy can support consumers’ ability to choose more sustainable goods and services and to safely and easily repair, reuse, repurpose, share, lease, recycle, and sustainably dispose of products or otherwise reduce their environmental footprint, as they desire. #environmentalclaims #ESGclaims #greenwashing

Congratulations to the newly launched Taskforce on Inequality and Social-related Financial Disclosures (TISFD) putting the “S” in ESG under the same spotlight as climate, biodiversity, and nature! The TISFD will develop a global framework for companies and financial institutions to include within their public reports more effective disclosures about impacts, dependencies, risks, and opportunities related to social issues, including inequality. 📊 Standardise disclosures for social-related financial risks 🌍 Provide tools to assess how inequality affects company performance 🔗 Integrate social factors into financial decisions alongside environmental ones 📈 Increase transparency and accountability on issues like wages, social equity, and human rights The Taskforce has the support of more than 100 organisations from across business, finance, labour, civil society and international organisations, and Chaired by global leaders: - Peter Bakker, CEO for the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development,  - Sharan Burrow, Former General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation - ITUC, - Arunma (AEEM) Oteh, Academic Scholar for Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, and  - Gabriela Ramos, Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences for UNESCO. CDP and the Net-Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU) (a centralized repository of corporate GHG emissions data) have expanded their partnership to provide free public access to core climate data from over 10,000 companies, representing more than 50% of global market capitalization. This initiative aims to streamline corporate climate reporting, align with global reporting standards, and support the objectives of the Paris Agreement by enabling stakeholders to track progress toward climate goals. By making critical climate data openly accessible, the partnership fosters greater transparency and collaboration in addressing climate change.

The Climate Change Commission's latest report is out today, looking at whether we're doing enough as a country to adapt to a changing climate. You can find the whole report on our website - https://lnkd.in/gkpizJAG - but here's my quick overview 👇   The impacts of climate change are getting worse and are affecting people's lives and livelihoods around the motu: floods, fires, droughts – things that pose risks to our homes, our communities, our businesses, our farms, and our infrastructure like roads and water supplies.   But we've also found that there are opportunities and things Aotearoa New Zealand can do now to respond. Investor groups have urged the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to include #socialfactors in its draft guide to #sustainabilitycollaborations. The draft guidance outlined that the ACCC is open to authorising competition law exemptions for financial institutions to collaborate on sustainability-based initiatives in cases where the benefits would outweigh the detriment of diminished competition. The draft, which opened to consultation in July, received comments from the Principles for Responsible Investment, Australian Council of Superannuation Investors and the Australian Sustainable Finance Institute. #climatechange #collaboration #healthandsafety #salary #humanrights #Australia #workforceconditions
