Why are so many finance functions in such a poor state? I hear horror stories from candidates on the daily on the kinds of finance functions they are inheriting. I'm hearing about basic stuff like the ATO asset and liability accounts being unreconciled with massive differences going back years, issues with stock carrying values and issues with lease accounting and revenue recognition. I had an issue once where the client was a large Pty Limited for several years but had no idea they needed to be audited. What do you think is the reason for this? Under-resourcing, poorly trained staff, poor technical screening of candidates when they join? Love to hear your thoughts because poor performance and poor compliance is at epidemic proportions.

A reminder for you that to claim a tax deduction for personal super contributions SMSF members must complete a Notice of intent to claim or vary a deduction for personal super contributions. Once received, a fund trustee must send a written acknowledgment, confirming they have received a valid notice of intent to claim a deduction. The ATO emphasised that members must receive the acknowledgment from their fund before they can claim the deduction on their tax return. #supercontributions #smsf #accountants #advisors #virtualcfoservices

Having the right number of experienced finance professionals within the finance function department can often be a challenge for foreign owned Australian subsidiaries and private companies. Issues can be triggered in various instances - when a staff member leaves with minimal time notice and appropriate transition planning cannot be undertaken or when an organisation elects to internally promote a professional to a leadership role / transitions to another department. It can be useful for Australian companies, still in growth / development phase, to maintain some flexibility and adopt a hybrid method, specifically entailing (a) hiring finance professionals whilst also (b) contracting an external organisation for complex compliance requirements or sensitive operation requirements.
