Understanding your audience makes communicating with them a thousand per cent easier, I reckon. What's the point in writing a communications strategy, yarn, or even email if the intended audience has no interest or investment in the topic? I mean, you can, but I'm not sure this is the most effective way of connecting with your audience. Now, please bear with me as I link this thought to some of my colleagues' fantastic work. On August 1, SEC Newgate Australia will discuss the latest insights from our research team's Mood of the Nation briefing. Did you know? The number of journalists in Aotearoa continues to decline in direct correlation with decline in local advertising revenue, while digital advertising revenue for unregulated offshore entities is only increasing ($1.86 billion in 2023). Looking specifically at the newspaper publishing, radio broadcasting and free-to-air television industries: – In 2023, there were approximately 1,290 journalists and editors (10% decrease from 2013). – The decline in roles can be directly correlated with the change in traditional forms of advertising revenue, over a 15-year period between 2008 and 2023: 📺 Television ad revenue has fallen $113m (–17%). 🗞️ Newspaper ad revenue has declined $463m (–61%). Call For Papers 2024 JERAA Conference University of Melbourne Wednesday 27 - Friday 29 November 2024 Early Career Researchers Day Tuesday 26 November 2024   Forward: facing the next wave of journalism disruption   ‘Forward’ is about imagining and preparing for the future and then proceeding to face the challenges and possibilities ahead. For contemporary journalism, it implies critically anticipating and dealing with the consequences of seemingly endless waves of technological disruption. This year, the news industry - practitioners, educators, researchers and consumers - are experiencing the impacts of Artificial Intelligence, the defunding of news on digital platforms, copyright battles, further downsizing of media businesses and the belligerence of big tech, and all in the context of looming elections and global conflict. The 'Beltway' is all aflutter about the work from home policy but I think that's a distracting sideshow - there are far more substantive issues impacting public sector performance that should be discussed. Last week’s performance report on the Ministry of Transport (New Zealand) - Te Manatū Waka was a textbook case of what goes wrong if you don’t get the “people stuff” right. It is the final instalment of a trilogy of such reports, that included Inland Revenue NZ and Ministry for Pacific Peoples, that test drove the Peter Hughes-led PIF version 2.0 (Performance Improvement Framework). The review ratings for MPP and IRD were unsurprisingly poles apart, with MOT somewhere in the middle, but closer to the MPP, than to our stellar-peforming tax collectors. They are all excellent case studies - IRD's was of how to do get things largely right, but with work to do to just stand still. The issues at MPP can largely be attributed to a rapid growth spurt and decades of underinvestment in both Pacific peoples more broadly but also Pacific public servants more specifically. But MOT has no excuses and its report uncovered a festering problem going back many years - although you would hardly know it from reading the first few pages. The hypothesis I suggested in today's column for BusinessDesk NZ, was that star people = star performance. Each agency was rated on 20-plus performance factors - the list was slightly different across each, but the reviewers were at least consistent in using the same three factors for the workforce area. The rating scale was - weak, developing, embedded and leading. Under workforce - MPP had 2 weak and 1 developing ratings 😱 MOT had 1 weak and 2 developing ratings 😕 IRD had 1 developing, 1 embedded and 1 leading rating 😇 The workforce ratings seemed highly correlated with the distributions of performance ratings across the other areas - hence my conclusion that a certain proverb, well known to New Zealanders, is more than just a beautiful sentiment - He aha te mea nui? Direct Aid Program 2024-25 - Indonesian Deadline 2 October 2024 Submissions are now open for the Direct Aid Small Grants Program, funded from Australia’s aid budget and managed through the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s overseas posts, including the Australian Consulate-General in Bali. Aims The program aims to support projects with a strong development focus that complement Australia’s broader aid program which contributes to sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction. DAP projects should promote a distinctive and positive image of Australia. Funding Information There is no minimum amount that a single DAP project can receive but the maximum is AUD60,000 over the life of the project. Eligible Activities DAP activities should primarily be aimed at achieving practical and tangible outcomes of high development impact. DAP is able to fund activities that have a direct, practical and immediate impact, including capacity building programs in the areas of governance and human rights engagement.
