Just like dial-up internet, VHS recorders and the typewriter – technology gets left behind when the world moves forward, this is what’s happening to 3G in Australia. From September, Optus is switching off 3G and repurposing it to boost the reliability, capacity, and speed of our 4G network and rollout 5G to even more Australians. We are reaching out to customers DIRECTLY with this important message to upgrade their impacted device and ask that they contact us to discuss their options. Additional support is also being provided to vulnerable customers to help keep them connected. Customers can check if their device is impacted by texting '3' to '3498' (mobile devices only, please text from the device you are concerned about). If you receive a message from Optus and are impacted by the 3G Shutdown, call 1300 219 070 or visit your local Optus retail outlet to discuss your options. The types of Optus devices impacted by the 3G shutdown may not just be handsets but also data-only devices such as tablets and dongles. This will include customers who are still reliant on 3G only devices and also those who may be using a 4G device that may rely on the 3G network. In some circumstances, a device will be on the 4G network but uses 3G for emergency calls, this includes devices purchased overseas that aren’t compatible with Australian 4G technology. The Australian Financial Review article on #AI and Macquarie Technology Group Macquarie Technology Group successfully expanded beyond its telco offerings, and recently has been investing heavily into data centres – the infrastructure needed to support the AI boom. The company will be the first to build a data centre specifically for AI, called IC3 Super West. Heat and power ”It’s a function of timing. We finished plans a year to a year-and-a-half ago, but at the same time AI took off, so we redid our plans for the new centre to be ready for AI,” Tudehope says. “There will be more to come… but we’re first out of the blocks.” To run AI algorithms requires far greater power than cloud computing, and generates significantly more heat. Tudehope says traditionally this was managed in existing data centres by having every second rack of servers empty, which wastes space. In IC3 Super West and other data centres designed for AI, they used liquid-based cooling of the GPU chips, or complete immersion of the servers in cooling tanks. “Data centres built until now were for cloud. There’s still extreme demand for that, we see AI as being in addition, not in place of, cloud demand,” Tudehope says. Macquarie has also just added AI into its cybersecurity arsenal, using it to identify genuine attacks and filter out “false positives”. It’s also using AI to boost productivity internally – a Macquarie software programmer that’s skilled in the Python programming language can now also work across other languages thanks to AI. “It’s making staff more productive and more effective and using their skill sets more broadly,” Tudehope says. “Too often AI is thought about by leaders as this new way of reducing staff, as opposed to can AI be something that makes people’s jobs more interesting and less dull, boring and dangerous.” Full article here: https://lnkd.in/g2JbnwQ7

India's telecom regulator's decision to penalize providers who fail to meet minimum 4G service requirements sends a clear message: accountability is non-negotiable. It's time for providers to prioritize delivering on their promises to customers. I fully support this move towards greater accountability in the telecom sector. Users deserve better call quality, faster data speeds, and fewer dropped calls. Together, let's raise the bar for service quality!

The trend of network sharing among Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) is gaining momentum. TPG and Optus's rural network sharing collaboration sets a remarkable benchmark for the industry, showcasing how it leads to lower costs per gigabyte and effectively bridges the digital divide. MNOs are increasingly focusing on cost optimization strategies with an emphasis on sharing end-to-end infrastructure. This mirrors the evolution of the tower industry, where MNOs initially viewed towers as a competitive edge, but eventually shifted towards sharing arrangements, transferring capital expenditure risks to Towercos. The future of network infrastructure lies in collaborative sharing models. It's imperative for Towercos, regulators, and MNOs to proactively envision this transition and collaboratively build frameworks to facilitate seamless sharing arrangements. Embracing network sharing is not just a cost-saving measure but a strategic imperative for advancing digital connectivity and fostering inclusive growth. Excited to share my latest analysis on the Impact of the 2024 Spectrum Auction on Competitive Dynamics and 5G Potential in India. In this article, I dive deep into the recent spectrum auction and evaluate how it affects the competitive landscape among India's leading mobile operators. RJIO holds a superior spectrum position in low-frequency bands, but its standalone 5G deployment means different bands are used separately. Bharti's integrated spectrum approach and VI's strong 900 MHz presence in key circles also play significant roles. However, without access to low-frequency bands like 600 and 700 MHz, the true potential of 5G cannot be leveraged or monetized effectively at the handset level. The government's role in making these frequencies available at affordable rates is crucial for realizing the full potential of 5G in India. Read the full analysis to understand how these dynamics are shaping up and what it means for the future of mobile connectivity in India. #5GAuction2024 #SpectrumAllocation #TelecomIndia #5GServices
