The value of residential construction output in the September 2024 quarter rose 1.8% from June to $23.4 billion, the highest in three years, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. This growth is expected to continue into 2025, for several reasons. First, government spending on infrastructure has begun to slow, which has freed up labour and material resources for residential work, Altus Group head of cost and project management Niall McSweeney told the Australian Financial Review. Second, dwelling commencements have hit their trough, according to Oxford Economics Australia economist Michael Dyer, who said we can expect growth in house starts in 2025. St Columba's College | Discovering the Construction Industry with Kapitol Group We recently welcomed Year 10 students from St Columba's College, Essendon to one of our data centre projects for a week-long, project-based learning experience. The students explored our site, asked questions, and gained fresh perspectives on the built environment. An engaging panel discussion with our team highlighted the variety of career paths within the industry, inspiring many who hadn't previously considered construction as a future option. Throughout the week, the students worked in groups to solve real-world challenges they observed on-site, such as safety, sustainability, or workplace culture. Last year, they impressed us with creative solutions like PPE designed specifically for women—a need often overlooked in our field. At Kapitol, we're committed to inspiring the next generation, especially young women, to see themselves in construction. We hope to see many of these students shaping the industry's future. Let’s be clear - Australia’s National Construction Code (NCC) is weak at best. Weak regulation is why homes are expensive to keep cool in heawaves or heat in winter. The standards are not to blame for rising construction costs, so let’s not ruin advancing consumer protection. Instead, there are many ways to reduce housing costs, without trashing quality: - Reduce size by 10% $ - Australia’s homes are the largest in the world. That’s not good when it comes to maintenance costs - Efficiency $ in the manufacturing process - modern methods of construction - Remove duplicates - homes do not need gas & 5 en suites. Cut out the pipework - Efficient $ by design - semi-detached & townhouses are more economical to build, use less land, townhouses are better still. Developers can do easy things to reduce costs. Now is not the time to be halting efficiency standards for another 10 years. Better homes are liveable in extreme heatwaves, and reduce energy bills all year round in a cost of living crisis. Halting National Construction Codes progress is not good for consumers - we need changes to the NCC which continue to deliver for consumers, not more delays on progress.

The Principles seek to address current sector challenges while encouraging improved collaboration between government and the construction industry and aligning efforts to deliver the $119.4 billion infrastructure pipeline for the benefit of the people of NSW. The Principles are designed to: • Deliver on the government’s priority of building more homes and essential infrastructure for the people of NSW. • Address current sector challenges while encouraging improved collaboration between government and the construction industry. • Stimulate the local construction industry, increase participation of local businesses and provide ongoing opportunities for the local workforce. • Creating a more flexible and accessible government procurement framework and system to increase opportunities for small and local businesses. • Building up local manufacturing capabilities, whilst developing a skilled workforce and promoting the use of locally produced goods. • Provide an opportunity for NSW Government to outline its key priorities and expectations for the construction sector.
