Just over one million new vehicles were sold in Australia during the first 10 months of 2024. The latest data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) recorded 98,375 new vehicle sales in October, taking sales beyond the one million mark. Despite this being the second-best October result on record, vehicle sales are down 7.9% compared to the same month last year. The private buyer segment, in particular, is taking strain – down 14.2% in October and 17.2% in September. Electric vehicle (EV) sales also remain subdued, despite more brands entering the market and substantial tax benefits available to eligible buyers. So which cars are selling well? SUVs and utes, with Toyota in the lead. You’ve probably heard plenty about the driver shortage, so now it’s time to look at what’s being done remedy the situation. 🙌🙋 The Australian Trucking Association has recently launched its InRoads Diversity and Inclusion program, which looks to attract under-represented groups to the trucking profession. 🤝 Following its launch in late July, the program soon received 1,100 licence requests from 45 companies in just 24 hours, so it’s off to a strong start. 💪 A more diverse trucking workforce means improved standards for everyone and a stronger, more resilient industry. It is an absolute pleasure to be part of PMB Defence, which Defence Connect has named "Export Business of the Year" for the second year in a row. From an industry perspective, I understand how challenging exporting can be. Navigating time zones, language barriers, and the complexities of establishing sustainable and maintainable capabilities within foreign nations' sovereign frameworks make defence exports one of the most intricate markets to operate. In the Australian context, I've observed that we often focus on complex commercial frameworks (ASDEFCON) with convoluted risk assessments to justify procurement value for money. This approach aims to satisfy government expectations of a system's deliverables but does little in terms of measuring sovereign capability. The ADF needs to focus on defining sovereign requirements derived from strategic analysis at the start of projects, ensuring the Australian Defence Force is equipped to defend our nation above the commercial mechanisms defined in the current set of commercial documents; this needs to include a greater focus on the role of Australian industry across the duration of the capability.

Last month, records for July vehicle sales were smashed, with 99,486 cars hitting the road across Australia, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries. That’s a 2.7% jump from the previous record set last year. Hybrids are more popular than ever, with sales soaring 88.4% in the month alone. Leading the charge was the Toyota RAV4, with a whopping 5,933 sales – up 115% from last year. It’s an all-time high for the SUV, with most buyers opting for the hybrid version. It looks like now is a great time to buy a used car in Australia. Recent data from the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) shows that the number of second-hand car listings increased by 7.2% in May compared to April. This surge in listings is driving down prices and boosting sales, with over 191,000 used cars sold in May, up 4.4% from the previous month. Interestingly, the data also shows that fewer used cars are being sold through dealers as more Australians choose to sell their cars privately. Now, if you're wondering whether you can finance a privately bought used car, the answer is yes. If you opt for a secured loan, keep in mind there might be age limits on the car you can buy. Alternatively, you could consider an unsecured loan. Australian transport and logistics insurance specialist NTI recently presented at Transport Women Australia Limited’s Living the Dream Conference, highlighting the risks associated with dairy transportation. The presentation, titled ‘Spilt Milk: A National Crash Reduction Program for the Dairy Industry,’ focuses on reducing dairy tanker crashes through workshops and education. In addressing this pressing issue, Dr Wren highlights the significance of illuminating trains to prevent collisions, citing data from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB). He stresses the need to contextualize safety issues, noting that collisions with road vehicles at level crossings are more common and pose greater risks, particularly for heavy vehicles. Furthermore, Dr Wren underscores the over-representation of heavy vehicles in collision statistics, emphasizing their increased involvement in level crossing incidents on both a per-vehicle and per-kilometre basis. This often occurs on rural routes with passive level crossings, where the absence of active safety controls heightens the risk of collisions and associated damages. This is really really important! TWICE if maybe my 6 th Sense had NOT alerted me; once in Milton, Brisbane and once in my own suburb, I was about to step out from stairs off a terrace on to the pavement and in the 2 nd instance, out of the local fish n chippery. The first case was a BIG Bloke 120.0 kg doing say 15.0 km / hr 1800 kgm / s; in the second instance bloke of 90.0 kg doing 20.0 km / hr = also 1800 kgm / s. If my 90.0 kg mass doing ZERO kgm / s was collected from the side their combined force = 20.0 mine! Bugger the rider; I am the innocent victim. Serious damage could have been done to me eg. thrown into someone eating at sidewalk table; thrown into pole holding up sidewalk roof, etc. etc. #MedicalPractitioners are seeing more and more cases in Australia alone. I believe that Melbourne City Council are showing Leadership. These risks were reasonably apparent to anyone starting up a business like this. People riding these dam things need to be heavily fined and or face the consequences of hurting other people.
