📢 GRANT ALERT | Social Enterprise Development Initiative (SEDI) grants now available Do you know a social enterprise looking to grow their impact? Social Enterprise Development Initiative (SEDI) capability building grants, valued at up to $120,000 each, are available to eligible social enterprises, including Indigenous owned or controlled organisations with a defined social benefit, working to support Australians experiencing entrenched disadvantage. Grant funds are to be used to purchase business and impact capability building services provided by intermediaries, such as financial services, evaluation and impact measurement, business consulting and legal advice. The SEDI Grants program will run through to June 2026. There will be rolling grant rounds, ensuring ample time for submissions by eligible social enterprises. Grants will be awarded based on the merit of the enterprises/projects, not on the order of application.   SEDI Grants are administered by Impact Investing Australia and funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services. Most of the value created by startups that grow to be successful is captured by founders and shareholders. If community building events (like those organised by KiwiSaaS) are important inputs to that eventual success then those founders and shareholders should surely be willing to pay for them directly, rather than expecting everybody else to cover that cost. I strongly advise all the founders I work with to spend *less* time at “ecosystem” events and *more* time focused on making their own ventures one that counts. That is by far the biggest contribution that any individual can make to actually growing an ecosystem. It requires founders to engage in the sector where their customers are, rather than the “ecosystem” where other founders are, and many are reluctant to do that because those are much harder conversations. It’s easy for those who love the vibe of the so called “innovation sector” to dismiss me as a hater, as they have done in the past when I’ve made comments like these. But these are the hard truths.

Cooperative Research Australia recently released the report from their National Innovation Policy Forum, which was held in Canberra late last year. The forum brought together Australian innovation leaders from business, research and boundary-spanning entities that foster industry-research collaboration with policymakers and parliamentarians to tackle common challenges. A number of discussions centred around the importance of collaboration between industry and university research. Several of the key themes covered on the day we think about at CAA, like how companies can scale in Australia and how we can build efficient frameworks for innovation so companies want to stay here as well as move here. A common sentiment amongst participants was that universities tend not operate in ways that work for industry. This is often driven by slower university timeframes, and differing KPIs compared to industry. It was emphasised that these differences must be bridged if industry and academia are going to be able to best collaborate for innovation going forward. It’s pleasing to see that changes are happening, albeit slowly, as this is of great importance to the cell ag sector in Australia—for the sector to thrive, all parts of the innovation ecosystem, including academia and industry, must work together. A useful new report from A New Approach (ANA) looking at arts and culture funding in Australia. With inquiries at federal and state level at the moment looking at local government sustainability/funding there are some really interesting figures looking at the breakdown between levels of government, subsectors and capital/ongoing expenditure. There's some positive news there as well, with funding, still down over the long term, starting to grow again - which in a time where communities are looking for joy and social cohesion and creativity and all the things that make life worth living, is good to see:) #LibrariesTransform #Libraries #Research

NEW REPORT 📢 City and regional deals could be a key to unlocking New Zealand's economic potential and boosting living standards across the country.   This research note, "City and regional deals" by Nick Clark, draws on the Initiative's previous work on localism and international best practices to explore how partnerships between central and local government can empower communities to tackle their unique challenges and seize opportunities for growth.   "For too long, our councils have borne the costs of growth while the benefits flow almost entirely to central government in Wellington," says Dr Oliver Hartwich, Executive Director. "It's no wonder many seem unwilling or unable to embrace much-needed development, reinforcing perceptions of incompetence and lack of focus."   One solution lies in the localist approach embodied in city and regional deals. These formal agreements align various stakeholders - central and local government, businesses, tertiary institutions, iwi - around shared strategies and investments tailored to a specific area. Crucially, they provide a pathway for devolving powers and funding to the local level.   "International experience shows the transformative potential of city and regional deals done well," says Nick Clark, senior fellow and author of this research note. "They've enabled coordinated investments in infrastructure, skills, and economic development, catalysing growth and improving quality of life."   However, making local deals work in New Zealand will require rebuilding trust between central and local government after years of top-down impositions and unfunded mandates. Capability and capacity gaps in many areas pose additional challenges.   "We need to give councils skin in the game by letting them share in the benefits of growth through better funding tools," says Clark. "But in return, deals must be carefully designed with strong accountabilities to keep all parties focused on delivering results."   The New Zealand Initiative believes localism, embodied in the form of city and regional deals, is the key to unlocking New Zealand's potential. Victorian councils understand the urgent need for all levels of government to address the deepening housing crisis in Australia. Because every single Victorian deserves access to affordable and suitable housing. We acknowledge that targets, as part of a range of responses, can be a useful tool in driving the creation of new homes in our State. But the road to target-driven outcomes must be paved with collaborative planning and the recognition of local realities. Today’s news that the State Government could remove planning powers from councils that fail to meet targets is worthy of discussion, but a more constructive idea is to recognise the value of partnership and collaboration.    Local governments hold invaluable local knowledge and insights that are an essential input into effective housing strategies. As the closest tier of government to the community, councils are uniquely positioned to translate housing targets into meaningful local developments that respect and enhance the character and needs of each area. We steadfastly believe the community is best served by a shared approach, where the State Government and councils work hand-in-glove to address the housing deficit together.  Stripping councils of their planning powers is not the solution. Instead, we should focus on strengthening the capabilities of local councils to work in line with the State Government’s objectives, bolstering their role in planning decisions and ensuring there is meaningful community engagement in the process. As we move forward, the MAV is committed to this partnership model as part of an approach that champions the expertise of local governments and nurtures the cooperative spirit that has always been present when we have solved big problems like this in the past. Join us to co-design a Rural Social Enterprise Network!!   There is a need to rapidly accelerate change in rural Australia to alleviate disadvantage.   Despite significant progress from focused efforts, 70% of rural inland towns in Australia have suffered severe decline over the past 50 years (SEGRA).   Which is why we’re inviting the rural social enterprise community nationwide, to join us in co-designing a Rural Social Enterprise Network for Australia.   The network is forming around the momentum created by the Manifesto for Rural Social Enterprise – a policy and advocacy campaign built by policy makers and practitioners, going global.   We have initially identified four purposes of the network: 1. To enable social enterprises and other stakeholders to exchange knowledge and experiences about the unique needs of rural communities. 2. To be a strong voice for rural social enterprise in policy discussions at national, state and local levels. 3. To collaborate with state and national social enterprise peak bodies to enable them to most effectively fulfill their missions in rural contexts. 4. The deep divide over whether community organisations should be political or not is a conversation I have had with so many for-purpose leaders over the last couple of years. It is a hard line to walk, and when 56% of people in this study see advocacy on social and political issues as an important function of community organisations but 49% think community organisations should stick to serving their communities and stay out of politics (and no, I don't know how there's a 7% crossover there, but perhaps those 7% think that you can advocate but still stay out of politics?), it will remain a source of contention. I look forward to more conversations on this topic while we figure out how to strike a balance.

"For many digitally excluded Australians, access to an appropriate device is not only a luxury, but also a prohibiting factor when it comes to fully participating in contemporary society," says David Spriggs in the Australian Digital Inclusion Alliance new report, ‘A Digital Inclusion Approach to Device Donation and Reuse’. The report states that lack of access to a suitable device has a strong correlation with digital exclusion. Mobile only users have a digital inclusion score of 57 as opposed to the national average of 73.2, according to the latest Australian Digital Inclusion Index data. 10.5% of the Australian population only has access to a mobile device. Single persons and public housing renters are overrepresented in this group, with 25% being reliant solely on mobile devices. One avenue to meet the demand for devices is encouraging appropriate device donation and reuse. Through an increase in device donation, there is an opportunity to significantly increase the number of devices available to vulnerable Australians.
