Ah, yes! The good old trick of dressing a power grab in the shiny clothes of "public safety." Let’s unpack this a bit, shall we? Government Control Masquerading as Safety: Yhe classic "We're here to protect you, but we're also going to control every single aspect of your existence" move. Isn't it fascinating how they manage to turn the idea of safety into a Trojan horse for surveillance? It's like saying, "We’ll protect you from your toaster gaining sentience, but we’ll also need access to every conversation you’ve had since 1998." Who’s really being protected here—us, or the government’s grip on data? Ambiguity as Power: Vague language? In a government document? Shocking! Nothing like using “flexibility” as code for “we’ll make it up as we go along.” It’s almost like they want to keep the rules open-ended so they can pounce whenever it suits them. Don’t define "high-risk AI" too clearly; otherwise, they can’t retroactively decide that your TikTok filter qualifies for full government oversight. Brilliantly sneaky, no? Faux Voluntarism: "Voluntary compliance," they say, as they hand you a roadmap straight to their desired outcome. It’s like when your boss says, "You don’t have to work on the weekend, but it’d be a shame if you weren’t a team player." The unspoken threat of future punishment is right there, smiling like a crocodile in the swamp. So, voluntary, sure—until it's not. Economic Centralization, Because Local Innovation is Just a Bit Too Free, Isn’t It? This is where it gets fun. On one hand, they’re screaming “innovation! Competition!” while on the other, they’re quietly shackling us to whatever the EU or the U.S. wants. It’s a bit like inviting someone to a party and then making them eat whatever the host brought—no questions, no complaints. Australia, a rule-taker in the global economic power play? Sure, mate, sounds like innovation… except it's not ours anymore. Corporate Capture in Disguise: “Collaboration with industry stakeholders.” Translation: “We’ve already called up Google, and they’ve faxed us their wishlist.” They love to use corporate jargon to hide the fact that the biggest players are calling the shots. How do you make regulations that “protect” us from AI, while letting the AI giants continue to do exactly what they want? Simple: you don’t. You just tell the public you’re doing it. The Safety Card—Your Favorite Backdoor to Surveillance: Isn’t it curious how the examples they pick—deepfake porn, algorithmic bias—are all things we’d unanimously agree are terrible? But then they stretch that “concern” far enough to justify a surveillance state. It’s like saying, “Hey, your neighbor set his house on fire, so we’re going to monitor all your cooking from now on—just in case.” It’s about “safety,” right? Sure… safety for whom? Building Ai skillsets Building Vertical LLMs // - Use our special knowledge of farming and unique characteristics to create a Farm focussed LLM - Build our first nations ancient knowledge and languages to create specific LLMs that continue the history and knowdge - Build the best of breed mining focussed LLMs And so on. That kind of work can create a multiplier effect.

Some startups are going ‘fair source’ to avoid the pitfalls of open source licensing - With the perennial tensions between proprietary and open source software (OSS) unlikely to end anytime soon, a $3 billion startup is throwing its weight behind a new licensing paradigm — one that’s designed to bridge the open and proprietary worlds, replete with new definition, terminology, and governance model. Developer software company Sentry recently introduced a new license category dubbed “fair source.” Sentry is an initial adopter, as are some half dozen others, including GitButler, a developer tooling company from one of GitHub’s founders The fair source concept is designed to help companies align themselves with the “open” software development sphere, without encroaching into existing licensing landscapes, be that open source, open core, or source-available, and while avoiding any negative associations that exist with “proprietary.” However, fair source is also a response to the growing sense that open source isn’t working out commercially. “Open source isn’t a business model — open source is a distribution model, it’s a software development model, primarily,” Chad Whitacre, Sentry’s head of open source, told TechCrunch. “And in fact, it places severe limits on what business models are available, because of the licensing terms.” Sentry, an app performance monitoring platform that helps companies such as Microsoft and Disney detect and diagnose buggy software, was initially available under a permissive BSD 3-Clause open source license. But in 2019, the product transitioned to a business source license (BUSL), a more restrictive source-available license initially created by MariaDB. This move was to counter what co-founder and CTO David Cramer called “funded businesses plagiarizing or copying our work to directly compete with Sentry.” Fast forward to last August, and Sentry announced that it was making a recently acquired developer tool called Codecov “open source.” This was to the chagrin of many, who questioned whether the company could really call it “open source” given that it was being released under BUSL — a license that isn’t compatible with the Open Source Initiative’s (OSI) definition of “open source.” Cramer swiftly issued an apology of sorts, explaining that while it had erroneously used the descriptor, the BUSL license adheres to the spirit of what many open source licenses are about: Users can self-host and modify the code without paying the creator a dime. They just can’t commercialize the product as a competing service. But BUSL isn’t open source. “We sort of stuck our foot in it, stirred the hornet’s next,” Whitacre said. “But it was during the debate that followed where we realized that we need a new term. Because we’re not closed source, and clearly, the community does not accept that we’re open source. I wasn’t aware of the term ‘micro-factories’ (apparently ‘does what it says on the tin’) until I tripped across construction-tech startup, Automated Architecture (AUAR) (pronounced ‘our’). AUAR was originally established as a consultancy back in 2017 by Mollie Claypool (CEO) and Gilles Retsin (CTO), both Associate Professors at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. Their objective is to combine robotics with algorithmic design in order to radically simplify the construction of affordable, energy-efficient, pre-fabricated housing at scale. Simply put (and believe me, there is a far more verbose explanation), AUAR's proposition is based on licensing ‘pop-up’ micro-factories – essentially industrial robots and associated kit housed in standard shipping containers – to housebuilders so that pre-fabricated components can be manufactured and assembled pretty much on site. The robots are provided through AUAR’s partner (and backer) ABB Robotics, part of Swiss industrial manufacturing giant, ABB, whose venture arm participated in a £2.6m seed funding round for the startup in March this year. The round was led by Ghent-based deep-tech and AI fund Miles Ahead. AUAR has also developed a software platform, MasterBuilder, that architects and developers can use to create designs that take advantage of the micro-factory approach to streamline ‘design-to-manufacture’ housebuilding. As best as I understand it, AUAR has one micro-factory installed in Belgium with construction group Vandenbussche NV - Bouwonderneming Aalter (also one of AUAR’s backers), and recently announced its first shipment to North America. AUAR has also just announced it has received a £341k grant from Innovate UK to run a 14-month project to develop a micro-factory suitable for building mid-rise timber housing up to six storeys high. All good stuff, but I’m struggling a bit to understand AUAR’s business model. According to Prof. Claypool, AUAR's micro-factories cost £250k (though I assume the price would vary depending on number of robots and other kit included). AUAR offers the both the micro-factory and software platform as a service. I would also imagine there’s a ton of consultancy and associated customisation services involved. And it’s this I see as AUAR’s main challenge to scaling up. When all’s said and done, AUAR is selling a mobile factory complete with an automated manufacturing system. I suspect this is a bespoke sale for each and every customer. If so, their success, to my mind, will depend on the extent to which Profs. Claypool and Retsin can concentrate on design and development, and outsource the heavy lifting (literally) to a network of construction and systems integration partners. And wrap it all up in a profitable financial model!

📢 Big news: Twitter (X) has officially announced that they will allow sexual and violent (NSFW) content on their platform. This marks a significant shift in the platform's content policies. Two months ago, Promptech partnered with New Zealand Skills & Education Group on a research project and noticed a significant gap: the lack of age grading systems for text. Unlike video platforms like Netflix, which show R-rated badges for inappropriate content, social media platforms have lacked similar tools. This gap is likely due to the previous lack of capabilities to analyze text at a large scale. With the advancement of large language models, we are now able to conduct such analyses. Interestingly, we were discussing shifting to multimodal models for our future research. It seems we need to move to models capable of grading text, photos, and videos simultaneously, thanks to X! Interoperability in data, ai, rules and decisions is N🚫T just a fancy marketing jargon, it helps everyone. No joke! I'm going to demystify the role of interoperability as it seems many are not understanding it correctly and the impact of it is underestimated. ⭕ne of the benefits of using open standards is interoperability. All the open standards👇 bring interoperability in the age of #ai. This means you can leverage the power of decisions, data, and AI in your application without building a data and #ai platform! 🔹Decision Model and Notation (DMN) 🔹Predictive Model Markup Language (PMML) 🔹Open Neural Network Exchange (ONNX) These are all open standards that give the end user, vendors in #data #bi, and the IT software development team a great deal of power. How? For instance, imagine you are a #data #bi vendor that needs to bring systematic decision-making to your data platform. This is a very big capability. In fact, there are vendors around the world, and all they do is provide decision management without even a data dashboard or reporting capability. It is a very complex job to allow users to manage business rules and business decisions. From creation, updating, and testing to operationalizing. Not only that, but also building debugger, tester, CLI toolkit, version control, permission and role access management, SDK integration, etc. 💥But here is the winner! You don't need to do any of that to empower your users. You don't even need to create a scrappy and hacky if-then-else engine and UI. 🚀By a simple integration to a DMN Engine with Conformance Level 3, you empower your users to leverage the full power of business rules and business decisions inside your own data platform or application e.g. #dataproduct. The same principles apply to other standards, such as PMML and ONNX. How? Allow execution of DMN, PMML and ONNX at runtime so that with a simple file drop (e.g. upload or whatever) you will open to your users the whole new world of #ai #machinelearning #predictiveanalytics and etc. 💣This is the delivery of ⭐business value on steroids! At heart, interoperability means giving the power to the end-users and delivering value to your customers.
