𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵? Well, in the US - but any time is a good time to talk about mental wellbeing. And it's the perfect excuse to share this podcast episode 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰. I think you would be hard pushed to find an Australian who doesn't know who Julie Goodwin is. And if they don't, the title of first ever Masterchef winner would be guaranteed to ring a bell. In this podcast she talks very openly and bravely about her mental health journey. Regardless of whether or not you have experienced a period of mental ill health, what she articulates is so highly relatable. And holds powerful lessons for us all. Such as? Julie talks about going back to Masterchef for 'Fans and Favourites' after a period of mental ill health. She was invited, and knew she needed a range of supports to enable her to do it without sacrificing her wellbeing. The list was 'long' including 8 hours of sleep, exercise, contact with family, etc. In the process of asking for what she needed she says "𝗜 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗼." Because the assumption was that it just couldn't be possible. The actual response? "𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁." I love so much about this conversation, but the point I'd like to reinforce here is this. 👉🏻𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗮𝘀𝗸. The conversations I have with friends, colleagues, clients, tell me that most of us are carrying around burdens that we don't have to. We are contorting ourselves to meet some erroneous belief of what is or is not possible, or reasonable or acceptable. Last week in one client call that was challenging the idea that a client deadline was immovable and sleep or sanity may need to be traded to meet it. But is it? Or will that deliverable sit in an email inbox for days? Have you asked? Other gems in this conversation: 🌟The first person you need to be loyal to is yourself - which at times means backing away from less important things you said you would do. 🌟Taking care of your mental wellbeing likely involves hard choices. But you always have a choice (another high repeat conversation theme). 🌟When you stop trying to keep all the plates spinning, other people step into the void. We aren't as essential as we might think we are. 😅 I know in that place of overwhelm, threat response, heightened stress and trying to do 'all the things', being told these perhaps trite truths doesn't land. Been there. 🙋🏼‍♀️ Which is where great stories and personal journeys have so much power. What is shared here is a very brave and very relatable one of those. Thank you so much David Watson for being my most recent guest on The Catching the Octopus Podcast. For those of you who do not know him, David is the Director, Founder and Lead Coach of NeuroLead Pty Ltd and shares some amazing insights on how understanding neuroscience is a key factor in opening us up to being successful leaders and having a successful life. David’s definition of Leadership is understanding and leading self in order to lead others and he demonstrates this through the quality content he shared in this interview. We talk about changing the questions we are asking from ‘Why doesn’t my team…” to, “How can I get my team…” in order to work out how to get the best out of the members of our team. David also discusses how impactful we are as leaders, without even knowing it most of the time, and that we not only have the power to positively impact and change the lives of our team but also how we have the potential to adversely affect them if we are not leading in effective ways. The interview does not go too deep into the intricacies of neuroscience, but he does share enough to give a good understanding of our ability to give language to our automatic processing centre to then allow us to start understanding the feelings it generates. Once we are in that position it leads us to be able to then observe what is happening, label it, then regulate it. Resulting in our ability to change to create more helpful neuroprocessing pathways in times where we would normally react.
