Having access to a bank account is vital to be able to participate in society.   In a report that Westpac New Zealand commissioned last year “Access to Banking in Aotearoa” it estimated that 1.25% of people over the age of 15 in Aotearoa New Zealand are unbanked. This equates to around 50,000 people, and having trouble accessing a bank account creates additional negative impacts and unfortunately these generally land on those who are already experiencing crises or disadvantage.   Reducing barriers for groups that find it difficult to open a bank account is very important to increase financial inclusion which helps participation in the economy and society.   Westpac New Zealand has made changes to make it easier for some of these groups to access and maintain a bank account, these include:   ✔ Young people in care Updated processes so those aged 15 – 17 who are in the care of Oranga Tamariki no longer need consent form a parent or guardian and also Oranga Tamariki can provide a supporting letter to satisfy the secondary form of ID/Proof of address.   ✔ Soon to be released prisoners Created a “new start” programme that allows soon to be released prisoners to open a bank account and debit card before they are released to help with integration back into society.   ✔ People declared bankrupt Updated policy to enable people declared bankrupt to continue to operate and open new bank accounts.   The team driving this work is the amazing Westpac Extra Care team which is lead by Louisa Brock. 🚨 Buy-now pay-later (BNPL) firm Laybuy has put itself up for sale and is hunting for potential buyers following a turbulent few years on the public markets, City AM revealed. The Kiwi FinTech firm, which launched in 2017 and once boasted around 766,000 customers across the UK, Australia and New Zealand, is looking to delist from the New Zealand’s junior stock exchange Catalist and move into private ownership, sources familiar with the matter told City A.M. Laybuy has faced a tough period since raising $80m (£40m) on the Aussie stock market in 2020 at a value of some $358m (£184m). Last January, the company scrapped its Sydney listing after a slump in its share price and said it would swap to the small business-focused market Catalist. The FinTech firm currently has a value of around £4.3m on Catalist, which is regarded as a feeder to New Zealand’s Exchange, known as the NZX.
