This new report by Prof Leslie Loble AM and Dr Kelly Stephens from University of Technology, Sydney makes a case for a greater level of quality assurance of educational technology (edtech) products in use in schools in Australia. It proposes the following quality assurance domains/criteria: - Aligns with curriculum - Supports quality teaching practice - Has a robust evidence base - Is accessible and inclusive - Values usability, including support for quality teacher use - Safeguards the privacy, security and ethical use of user data and information One of the international examples described in the report is the Safer Technologies for Schools (ST4S) initiative that NZ participates in alongside Australia. While narrower in its focus it does provide a base level of assurance for NZ schools and kura around the security and privacy of edtech products. This is a good example of using generative AI tech to improve the student experience, with a project that probably wouldn't have been attempted before. By standardising 1,200 courses and 60,000 web pages, they were able to fix the kind of things that annoy students (like making sure a course video is right at the top of the web page, so that it's easy to find; and making it mobile friendly) and which become barriers to learning. We've become so used to 'slightly broken' learning experiences that are the result of internal systems, but fixing them makes a big difference to the fluidity and accessibility of the learning journey. #generativeAI #learningtransformation

The Select Committee on Adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) presented its extensive 222-page report to the Senate. This document outlines how they think AI can shape Australia's industries, workforce, and communities. By using Teams transcriptions and recordings, I can easily and confidently generate meeting notes using Copilot. The message in this article is that technology is not prioritised in schools in the way that traditional core subjects are. This is because the school and university systems were designed by business leaders to pump out a workforce with consistent skills almost 200 years ago and not much has changed. Schools and their curriculum prepare children for the requirements of buisiness and society in general. Until business treats technology as a core requirement for the majority of its employees, like language and maths then the school system would be doing a disservice to their children to prioritise technology. It’s not enough to pay lip service by merely stating technology is crucial to business. Business has to start to embed technologists throughout its organisation structures. Technology Leaders, Technical Experts, Functional Subject Matter Experts, Executive Sponsors, etc need to be integrated into the DNA of a business on a truly equal footing to People, Sales, Marketing and Operational functions, etc. Until this happens consistently across business then I can’t see technology reaching an equal footing with other core subjects.
