Striving to work as an ‘ecosystem organizer’ I so appreciate the resources of the Griffith Centre for Systems Innovation. This article on the role of “interemediaries” is super helpful in explaining functions/roles that are often taken for granted (or hard to describe.) “The quest to catalyse large-scale change or shift systems often begins with or is supported through organisations — that is, containing structures that enable a group of people to work collectively in a coordinated way for a shared purpose. With coordination at the heart of these efforts, increasingly, many of these organisations are taking on ‘intermediating’ and/or ‘platforming’ roles, with some combination of the following aims: ✔️providing the mediating and organising mechanisms needed to draw together diverse groups of people, ✔️catalysing collective sensemaking and initiating collaborative action; increasing the flow of resourcing (funds, etc) across ecosystems; and/or ✔️generating learning, knowledge and other forms of resourcing across an ecosystem to support transformative change.” Thanks for lifting up Joss Colchester 🙏🏼 🔗 in comments

Economic pressures are testing a key pillar of our national identity: multiculturalism. Historically, tough economic times have often led to misplaced blame, with migrant communities often unfairly targeted. But through our work SSI, we know migrants are part of the solution, not the problem. Thanks Alison Croggon for sharing this. We need to hear the ways to find real living wages for artists and in the meantime while we look at big systems. We also have to look at the small structures in existing systems too. The grant making structures that think that a 9% funding rate is a thing that is supporting excellence- it’s a number demonstrating wasted effort, despair and in economic terms lost productivity. Also structures that count artists subsidising their own work as “investment” when we know the market doesn’t financially return on that investment so what we mean is underpayment. And that’s only where the work intersects with grant structures - then there’s all the other disruption and market concentration… but looking forward to hearing this information.

👏🏻This week we kicked off our Communicating with Impact Program with Steve Hassett and his amazing team at Foundation Technologies Australia! An brilliant first session, great team and contributions! Communication is key, especially in the new world of AI & remote work. Now more than ever we need to ramp up the human side and create communication that cuts through both internally and with external suppliers, stakeholders and our customers. Communication is the response you get. In the 1st session we unwrapped communication styles and preferences and the importance of body language and looking at what is not being said. We looked at strategies, tools and tips of paying attention to non verbal cues and the importance of listening & questioning and so much more. Lots of hands on activities to bring learnings to life a d time for each person to share their OOV and workshop team norms & wants and needs. The next session will be about rapport building to influence and communicate through negotiation along with building a culture of gratitude. 📢 A way to measure AI impact, codesigned by Australian industry leaders for Australian companies launched today! It was an honour to design this framework in collaboration with Judy Slatyer and RAI at Scale Think Tank members at National AI Centre. Our vision is Australian companies are known and respected for their responsible and impact led deployment and use of AI systems. Numerous frameworks and standards address the internal governance of AI applications and technologies. However, until now, there hasn't been a shared vocabulary to discuss the real‑world social, environmental and economic impacts that occur from companies' use of AI systems. This year Rosella Street have been developing a #DigitalProductPassport (DPP) solution for council, government and industry. A DPP is a digital file that contains vital information about a product’s material breakdown, the percentage of recycled content, and the origin of the materials. It also includes technical data to assess how recycled products or materials can be applied, their local availability, alignment with standards, and any sustainability or recycled content certifications. This project is part of the Recycled Content Verification Challenge by NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, under the NSW Small Business Innovation and Research (SBIR) Program run by the Office of the NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer. We are running a pilot and testing program between November 2024 and April 2025. I know there's a lot of unwarranted #hype and #noise around #AI, but AI is certainly not a fad. Science and Nobel Prizes don't lie. This year's Nobel Prizes are big on AI. The #NobelPrizeInPhysics goes to AI/Deep Learning pioneers Geoffrey E. Hinton and John J. Hopfield, while the #NobelPrizeInChemistry featured Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper from Google's AI arm, DeepMind, for their outstanding work on applying the best AI models to solve 3D structures of proteins - the building blocks of life. I believe it's time for all of us from different backgrounds, professions, and communities to come together and have a serious discussion about AI. We need to clear up the myths surrounding the good and the bad, and identify its ongoing and potential impacts on our families, careers, businesses, communities, and society as a whole. I'm excited to see that Privacy by Design is such a focus of Australia's Privacy Awareness Week beginning May 6th. It features The Privacy by Design Awards shining a spotlight on the great work of Australian organisations in this space. I am also thrilled to see that Transparency and Accountability feature in the three core principles that the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner put forward for businesses. These are critical areas where so many organisations are really struggling to move from privacy being a technical and legal hurdle towards a central consideration for trustworthy products and services. "TRANSPARENCY If your business is collecting personal information from people, you must be open and transparent about how you will handle it. Seek informed consent Make sure your privacy information is clear, accessible, and accurate when seeking consent. Apply privacy by design Embed good privacy practices into the design of products and services from the beginning. Privacy impact assessments will help you adopt a privacy by design approach, including when looking at new technologies." ACCOUNTABILITY Embed a strong privacy culture Make privacy a leadership priority and foster a strong privacy culture at all levels. Empower staff to be strong custodians of privacy." It's going to be a long road to bring this to life for many organisations, but it's heartening to see that Australia's regulator is shining a light on the role of design in privacy to help us get there.
