The future energy system will be based on flexible and dispatchable generation and not "baseload power". “ The term “baseload” is NOT a load construct but an essential (coal fired) generation construct. The “principle” of having “wild demand” has been, and still is, about GROWTH - building infrastructure, be that generation plant or network connectivity. The challenge was that any coal plant - built to meet peak demand - had to have enough load at all times but especially overnight - hence the term “baseload” and why Electric Domestic Hot Water came into being … for generators not consumers! That consumers might use their flexibility for themselves to save on “everything” and drive Energy Cost Efficiency - was never part of the ‘plan’ … and bluntly it terrifies the traditional supply side only control construct participants… including AEMO‼️

Must-read report from The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) details how the National Electricity Market (NEM) has seen energy arbitrage revenues for battery #energystorage systems (BESS) surge by *97% year-on-year (YoY)* to AUS$25.4 million (US$16.39 million). The report also says that "Batteries’ role in supporting morning and evening demand peaks became more prominent, with average generation in those periods more than doubling since last year, reflecting the significant annual increase in NEM battery capacity." I dropped into this pv magazine Australia article despite the “disclosure” in the email headline that it was from the VEPC … hoping for the best but found the worst. @bruce mountain (still has me blocked) … proposing positively idiotic things to drive up consumer energy costs. Who funds the VEPC? BATTERIES (BUFFERS) are crucial to the future energy system but creating BTM profit systems that feed businesses and aggregators is not going to lower energy prices for consumers nor deliver Energy Cost Efficiency! The future system must have ALL FiT (wherever it is) paid ONLY that interval’s wholesale spot price (or pay to export if it is negative)! Anything else will deliver (guaranteed) distortions with higher costs for all consumers. /——- from the article …. “To make it attractive to businesses, we propose the incentive of new floor prices for electricity sold to the grid by businesses,” Mountain said, noting that it’s much less profitable to sell to the grid than it is to avoid buying from the grid. “It would cover electricity injected into the grid outside solar peak periods, before 11am or after 2pm, and from behind-the-meter batteries discharging to the grid during the evening peak, from 6pm to 9pm.” The VEPC analysis concludes that a solar feed-in floor price of $100 (USD 67.2) per MWh and battery discharge floor price of $200 per MWh is likely to deliver financially viable battery-backed solar. This massive US$94m investment from Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) will see 370 community batteries rolled out across Australia - a strong contribution to the #EnergyTransition in that market and an exemplary policy initiative other governments should emulate. Once connected to the grid, benefits of the batteries include: alleviating local network constraints, increasing rooftop solar PV capacity, reducing emissions, and lowering consumers’ electricity costs. A new report for Solar Citizens and the APVI - Australian PV Institute led by CEEM's Mohammad Dehghanimadvar and Dr. Mike Roberts found that Australian rooftops hold an estimated 45.8GW of unrealised solar PV potential, and the estimated untapped bill savings from solar could amount to a huge $9 billion. The report also shows that rental properties alongside apartment blocks and social housing hold a large amount of that potential, and residents could be missing out on huge electricity bill savings offered by solar. The authors highlight a need for targeted incentives and subsidies to unlock this potential, addressing the split between tenants and landlords. The 150MW, two-hour big battery will be built in two stages, with the first 60MW stage expected to reach mechanical completion by Q3 of 2025. A second 88MW stage is expected to be installed by the Q3 of 2026.  .................................................. Spain-based renewables developer X-ELIO will add a nearly 150MW, two-hour big battery to its Blue Grass solar farm in Queensland’s Western Downs, marking its first hybrid solar and storage project in Australia. The 200MW Blue Grass solar farm was completed in late 2022, backed by a power purchase agreement with US software company Salesforce, and has recently ranked among the nation’s top performing utility-scale PV assets. X-Elio says the decision to add a 148MW/296MWh big battery to the solar farm will transform it into a hybrid power source capable of providing essential grid services that will enhance energy reliability and grid stability. A new era for Australian reporting ‍ In September 2024, the Treasury Laws Amendment (Financial Market Infrastructure and Other Measures) Bill 2024 was passed. This legislation will initially obligate the largest of Australia’s emitters and corporations from 1 January 2025.  ‍ The main requirement is for businesses to disclose information derived from scenario analysis that considers climate risks and opportunities under at least both of the following scenarios: A low global warming scenario (1.5C) A high global warming scenario (2.5C+)  ‍ In addition, businesses need to consider the impacts of identified risks and opportunities on their strategic and forecasted financial performance. ‍ What must be reported ‍ The legislation requires businesses to report the material impacts of identified risks and opportunities associated with climate change on their strategy and forecasted financial performance. This includes disclosure of: Scope 1, Scope 2, and, after the first year, Scope 3 carbon emissions.  A company’s transition plan that is defined as - “an aspect of an entity’s overall strategy that lays out the entity’s targets, actions or resources for its transition towards a lower-carbon economy, including actions such as reducing its greenhouse gas emissions.” ‍ These disclosures must be part of a sustainability report in the annual report to shareholders, alongside the directors’ report, financial report and auditor’s report.  ‍ Critically, directors must declare compliance with the legislation regarding any climate disclosures. There are also increasing assurance requirements like those required for financial reports under the Corporations Act that ratchet up after the first year. This means that auditors must sign off on the reports. ‍ 💡 In carbon reporting, Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions refer to different categories of greenhouse gas emissions an organization must account for: Scope 1 emissions: Direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the organization, such as fuel combustion from company vehicles or on-site manufacturing.
