The Foodstuffs grocery co-ops have acknowledged today’s release by the Commerce Commission of its full reasons for declining our merger clearance application.    On 1 October, the Commission announced its decision to decline our application to merge with Foodstuffs South Island but have only provided the full determination today.    Our CEO Chris Quin said the co-ops will now take time to examine the reasonings before deciding next steps. “Our submissions showed this merger wouldn’t reduce competition in any market because we’re two co-ops in two separate islands.”    “We still firmly stand by the benefits for customers, partners, stores and our teams. Businesses across the world fight for scarce capital. Australia is one of the world’s most expensive places to manufacture food. Our ability to export is disappearing, so we rely on a small to medium domestic market. If all you’re getting is more supply side cost pressure, government red tape and you can’t recover price - you have little choice but to secure your products from cheaper offshore supply networks. Governments need to get serious about supporting Australian food production. Stop scapegoating Global food companies. Improverished consumers and what does it mean for #FMCG players? Personal savings rate hitting the all time low, while at the same time credit card debt is near all time high signals that consumers are poor and may be nearing their limits with unprecedented cost of living and assets inflation far outpacing their income growth (excl. top decile) Most of the FMCG players rely on a strong middle class, and the purchasing power of the bottom 90% of the consumers across the major economies got visibly poorer, as the vast majority of newly 'created' (printed) wealth got accumulated by the very rich (>66% of all the wealth 'printed' since 2020 ended up with the top 1%) that are unlikely to drastically increase their spend on CPG (how much more shampoo can Jeff Bezos buy?) If so far the price elasticity was low (low to no volume decline) it was driven by several forces that may well be about to expire, as many metrics are hitting the respective lows/ highs not seen since 2008/09 downturn Maintaining the pre-pandemics consumption will result tricky for many consumers.
