🚨 Warning: Brand vs Performance marketing noise 🚨 Mr Ritson and MarketingWeek hits the nail on the head, again. Credit to ANZ brand (in NZ) and Astrud Burgess for leading the way. The brand ad had me tearing up. Just lovely 😍 Congrats on the award. So have people really been trying to do both long term brand building and short term sales in one advert? Most likely. I should stop being so naive. Then labelling it as some new amazing church we should worship. Welcome to the holy saint of “brand performance” or cathedral of “performance branding”. Apparently so. We do love a trendy new name on this platform. Eek. “When you have two masters,” Burgess observes, “and you try to build brand and achieve customer acquisition all within the same ad, you end up not doing either one particularly well.” (source: ANZ CMO, Astrud Burgess) Case in point: The recent Nike troubles. Truthfully the answer is never crystal clear. We seem over obsessed with data and attribution in today's modern marketing (ah, the promise of digital). It would seem ANZ have a sensible grown up approach to this whole nauseating debate. TOFU brand-building best with a new series of long-form, super-effective ads that she refers to as her ‘preference’ campaign. And on the other side investing in more basic, rational, targeted ads, united with the brand work through the ANZ brand codes, that pushed the different products that the bank offered for immediate sales. The ‘pathway’ work as she calls it. Call it TOFU or BOFU or to be honest, whatever you want. Just don't try to do it all in one ad or spend all your money in one camp. And you will be attracted to shiny new channels and technologies (yes, looking at you AI) but be focused on their use. And definitely measure it. But first be clear on what you are trying to achieve with your marketing dollars. Credit to ANZ and Mark R. I have a pet theory that over the next decade we're going to see a rise in the commitment to long-term brand building corresponding with a flight to quality and durability as the underpinning of true sustainability. ❓ Qsday Tuesday >> Are URLs required on advertising? With the rise of google, chatgpt etc, do we still need to tell people how to find our website? Case in point: I’m driving along a major Melbourne road and see a White Fox billboard and I despise it for many reasons: 😣 The overtly sexualised imagery 😣 The cheap fast fashion clothing 😣 I really have no idea who they are 😣 OR what they want me to buy I find this unsettling as I really ❤️ billboards, they are probably my favourite kind of advertising. I truly love them so much because you have to be REALLY clever and purposeful because you’ve got about 5-10 seconds to capture your audience’s attention. They are also 💲 💲 💲 so the danger is wasting these using too many words that never get read. BUT – after I give it more thought I start to think that that maybe it is actually clever. 👀 Because later that day, I google them. I do this because there was no URL on the site and realistically I probably wouldn’t have remembered it anyway. I find out they are actually a fashion retailer (and NOT a ❌❌❌ club like I first thought! ) and have a huge following (2m+ tiktok followers). I also am relieved to see on reddit that others were just as confused as I was! So, even though I hated their advertising, had no idea who they were, I STILL went away, googled them! ❓ So what do you think - do we still need URLs on advertising? ✔ ❌ Or, are you (like me) just googling anyway?

Retailing in a downturn: What can we learn from the past? My latest feature for Inside Retail Australia. Whether we define it as a formal 'recession', a 'downturn', or just a rough patch, it's pretty clear that retailers are doing it tough amid inflationary pressures, cost of living pressures, and fluctuating consumer confidence. So when Heather McIlvaine asked if I could write a feature on strategies to help retailers I was keen to help BUT conscious of not telling brands what to do when I'm not living the realities day to day. Thankfully (or maybe not!?), we have quite a bit of research from past downturns about how consumer behaviour changes during and even after, and the kinds of strategies that can still be successful for retailers. For the article, I focused on three main ideas: 1. Learning about how consumers adapt 🛍 With a link to Maria Sarmento's work tracking consumers during and after recessions 2. Continuing marketing efforts, and even opportunities of new launches Linking to the analysis from M. Berk Talay and colleagues on the success of product launches in recessions 3. The data received from the Franchising NZ survey is incredibly valuable for the advocacy work FANZ does and provides the NZ franchising community with powerful franchising data. The previous 2021 Franchising New Zealand Survey identified: - 590 franchising brands and an estimated 32,000 franchisees in New Zealand. - Business Format Franchising turnover of $36.8 billion, up from $27.6 billion in 2017 – an increase of 33%. - Total franchise sector turnover (including Motor Vehicle Sales and Fuel Retail) up 27% from $46.1 billion to $58.5 billion. - Total Business Format Franchising employment grew by 32,620 (or 26%) to 156,820. This podcast was outstanding, and I gained valuable insights into customer loyalty, including the various types of loyalty programs and how to set the right objectives, such as increasing traffic, spend, and frequency. It was also enlightening to learn about the future of customer loyalty, particularly around value, simplification, and personalisation. Thanks Sue Temple GAICD!!
