Since then, the bank has poured over $20 billion into the fossil fuel industry. $12 billion of that has gone directly to companies building new coal, oil and gas projects – making climate change worse. Using Future Foresight in Policy Design: A New Approach for Policymakers I've been digging into the Australian Government's approach to strategic foresight, and it's got me thinking about how we could shake things up here in the UAE. The Aussies have put together this brilliant primer on using "Futures" in policymaking. It's not about crystal balls and fortune-telling - it's about being smart and prepared for whatever comes our way. Why bother with all this future stuff? Well, it's pretty simple: 1-Stay Resilient: Craft policies that can weather multiple possible futures. 2-Be Innovative: Unlock a treasure trove of better policy choices. 3-Design Anticipatory Policies: Get ahead of the curve and stay there. This approach is not about predicting the future but about preparing for it, ensuring that we can navigate uncertainties with agility and informed confidence. This document provides pragmatic advice drawn from the experiences of the Policy, Project and Taskforce Office at PM&C delivering Futures projects across a range of agencies and policy portfolios - and the lessons learned by many experienced practitioners from inside and outside the Australian Public Service (APS).

Proud to be involved with a superannuation fund that understands long term investing requires a broader view than just market movements, it requires a prosperous and sustainable environment, economy and society. When our members retire with the best financial outcomes possible it should be into a world that matches their hopes and aspirations not one ravaged by climate change, not one where women are disproportionately disadvantaged, or where the food is inedible because it is all factory farmed, or where there are no places to walk because everything has had concrete poured over it and, in my view, most importantly their work paid into their super, their kids have decent employment and the workers their interact with can focus on their health, meals or transport without being distracted by whether or not their gigs for the month will be enough to pay the rent! Short term profiteering or executive bonus hunting that puts the future of our members at risk should not, and will not be, tolerated by us or any major investor. #superannuation #investments #TheFutureIsWhatWeMakeIt

DOOMSDAY DUTTON : CEO of the Climate Council Amanda McKenzie said, ‘Peter Dutton could cook the books with some creative accounting to sell this fantasy. The Climate Council has identified seven furphies (posted below) that Australians are likely to see in the LNP’s nuclear costings. Australians are being kept in the dark about the true costs of the federal Coalition’s risky and expensive nuclear scheme, saying heavy reliance on the first of two Frontier Economics reports paints a damning picture of the methods they may use to fudge the nuclear numbers and mislead Australians. Climate Councillor & Economist Nicki Hutley said, ‘The federal Coalition’s nuclear scheme would cost Australians a bomb. Policy Insights from LETA: The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Guide for Large Emitters. Under its Climate Change Policy and Action Plan, the NSW EPA has a role in supporting the NSW Government to meet its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. This includes public consultation on the draft Guide for Large Emitters. Why Guide for Large Emitters Matters: - It outlines the requirements project developers will need to meet in their Environmental Impact Assessments. - It requires detailed emissions information from large-emission projects. - It provides the community with information about emissions from new projects. As an organisation committed to advancing low emission technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Australia and globally, and as a member of the EPA, LETA recently submitted feedback on the draft Guide. LETA’s Submission in a Nutshell: - We called for framework simplification: Stating that the Draft Guide complicates the existing regulatory framework and duplicates a national approach. We recommend simplifying it to ensure project developers clearly understand the requirements. - We called for clarification of requirements: Stating that clear guidelines are needed for conducting a Greenhouse Gas Assessment and creating a Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Plan. The lack of proper #fauna and #flora studies and inadequate #community #engagement has led to massive opposition against large-scale renewable projects (83% are against these projects in the Have YourSay survey: https://lnkd.in/gp_SCbzC). It should not come as a surprise because altering the #environment and #lifestyle of communities and #FirstNations peoples, and interfering with #nature inevitably triggers backlash. When projects of such magnitude are proposed without thorough consideration of their impact on local #ecosystems and without involving the affected communities in decision-making processes, it disrupts established ways of life. It raises valid concerns about #environmental degradation and loss of #cultural #heritage. This resistance reflects an instinct to protect the #environment and #traditions, especially when they feel their interests and voices are not adequately represented or respected in the planning and implementation of these projects. To address these challenges, The Community Engagement Review led by Andrew Dyer made recommendations including establishing independent rating schemes for #developers, implementing clearer project zoning, and prioritizing genuine community benefit sharing and communication programs, underscoring the crucial role of building trust and integrating community engagement efforts into project development. While miles away from the US election, NAB's policy update today is relevant in terms of climate action and pressure on ESG-minded investors. A curious feature of bank approaches to climate change is that some aspire for leadership, some are intent to fall behind, while NAB insists on staying in the middle of the pack. There's some encouraging news in that the bank will include capital markets activities such as bond facilitation in its targets and transition plan assessments, and will not refinance customers who have no or limited transition plans - in contrast to Westpac who issued their update on Monday, yet it's not clear how these plans are assessed. NAB has also further tightened their lending restrictions to coal, oil and gas expansion, a further signal to companies threatening our climate that the writing is on the wall for fossil fuels. Yet it is bitterly disappointing that Australia's largest agribusiness bank is taking very little action on deforestation beyond improving their analytical capabilities. As the United Nations has said, banks who finance fossil fuel expansion and deforestation while claiming to be committed to net zero emissions lack integrity. Momentum continues but needs to dramatically accelerate if we are to avoid the worst effects of the climate and biodiversity crises.

There's a lot of UK #election commentary focused on which of our many social and climate challenges the new government should prioritise. But few are talking about the how of change. As important as any one issue is the need to join the dots between them all. What's needed is a government that understands the root causes (not symptoms) of the challenges we face and galvanises joined-up action well beyond the usual suspects. One that embraces innovation and the routes needed for those innovations to scale. One willing to ask hard questions of where we've gone wrong to date, and to fundamentally shift policies, taxes and subsidies in ways that enable a more socially just and ecologically regenerative UK to emerge. There's an opportunity to do things differently - and the how will be as important as the what.
