The Australian Citizen Science Association are writing a discussion paper which aims to identify and strengthen linkages between citizen science and university research to benefit society. In particular, we want to explore how to improve citizen science outcomes and applications, by supporting connections between citizen science programs and early-to-mid-career researchers in Australia. We are interested in hearing from everyone - including people who have been involved in citizen science, professional researchers and the general public. As well as collecting data from the public, we are seeking to co-create the discussion paper with multiple stakeholders, and involvement and co-authorship is open to anyone who is able to volunteer their time. I have been nominated as a candidate for the ITS Australia Board of Directors and to represent the University of Technology Sydney from 2025 onwards. Over the years, I have organised several presentations and special sessions and invited renowned speakers from all around the world. I have also held demonstration booths and served as chair reviewer and chair organiser for several ITS Australia summits and various national conferences. I was a co-organiser of the Data Community of Practice and represented scientific progress on various mobility issues several times. In 2024, I was part of the ITS Australia Summit, organised demonstrations of our AI and transport capabilities at UTS, and also helped to organise the ITS Career Expo for NSW students to join the summit for free and engage with industry. That was really well received: more than 100 students joined, and I was so happy to receive so much positive feedback after this. What’s my plan if I get elected? For the next 2 years, if I get elected as an ITS Australia Board Director, I plan to leverage my scientific position and knowledge in the ITS field and: -         Contribute to organising and holding a joint event between two large conferences on the Gold Coast in 2025, such as the IEEE ITSC conference and the ITS Australia Summit. As a scientific representative, I will be part of both organising committees and work towards leveraging joint plenaries/demonstrations/presentations that can benefit both the international A* representatives in transportation science that will come to Australia and the Industrial Australian landscape via our national industry and government representatives that will come to the event. -         Help the Next-gen community by expanding the free student access to ITS Australia events for internships and industry -         Organise joint scientific and innovation events across academia and the industry sector to promote ongoing collaboration and idea generation. -         Promote the ITS Australia events and its benefits to members and new emerging industries. Cooperative Research Australia recently released the report from their National Innovation Policy Forum, which was held in Canberra late last year. The forum brought together Australian innovation leaders from business, research and boundary-spanning entities that foster industry-research collaboration with policymakers and parliamentarians to tackle common challenges. A number of discussions centred around the importance of collaboration between industry and university research. Several of the key themes covered on the day we think about at CAA, like how companies can scale in Australia and how we can build efficient frameworks for innovation so companies want to stay here as well as move here. A common sentiment amongst participants was that universities tend not operate in ways that work for industry. This is often driven by slower university timeframes, and differing KPIs compared to industry. It was emphasised that these differences must be bridged if industry and academia are going to be able to best collaborate for innovation going forward. It’s pleasing to see that changes are happening, albeit slowly, as this is of great importance to the cell ag sector in Australia—for the sector to thrive, all parts of the innovation ecosystem, including academia and industry, must work together. Last measured in 2016, Australia ranked 29th and 30th out of 30 #OECD countries for #collaboration between industry, higher education and public research institutions on innovation. #PSN polling results have shown some very popular #roadblocks to collaboration in our public sector - practical integration of academic research and partners, difficulty identifying the right partners, limited access to research, administrative burdens and more (read on for those). But although these challenges linger, there are inspirational councils and departments within our borders who have collaborated successfully - joining forces, facing these #barriers head on and finding innovative #solutions to provide improved services for Australian citizens. 🚀 Exploring CRC Alumni Entrepreneurial Dynamics 🚀   At the Collaborate Innovate 2024 conference last month, Rozetta Institute and Cooperative Research Australia were thrilled to launch the project report on Mapping Entrepreneurial Alumni from the Cooperative Research Australia's Centres Program. This study delves into the entrepreneurial journeys of CRC alumni, shedding light on their successes, challenges, and future potential. When will Round 26 of the Cooperative Research Centres program start? For Round 25, the official open period was only 57 days (8 January to 5 March). The program guidance for future rounds is "Future rounds of the CRC Grants Program are determined by the Minister. CRC Grant rounds have been held annually over recent years". In reality, bids for Round 26 are underway, or at least under discussion. It tends to be hard to get stuck in until the shortlist for Round 25 is known (soon, I expect), but delay is the enemy of a quality bid. Bids take time to develop. Participants in bids take a long time to decide to participate (not too many people are in a position to think and act on a 10-year horizon). Then they have to seek approvals. That may involve approvals from HQ out of the country and the inevitable response "What the duck is a CRC?" Starting early saves money. Those that start later often need to bring on more assistance and therefore cost in their bid. I argue that the application forms are not very difficult to complete. A minimal amount of external guidance is needed to address the issues the CRC Advisory Committee wants to know about. Building the trusted relationships that lead to participants deciding to join a CRC can't be outsourced. But rushed bids will resort to using consultants to source participants - a recipe for more cost now and member churn down the track. Start early and run your bid much like you intend to run your CRC. Your expertise, efficiency and networks are the best path to a high-impact CRC. Peacock Consulting doesn't write bids. Innovation is simple at its very basis. Last week we joined public servants, startup owners and others at the Australian Innovation Management Institute (AIMI) Public Sector Innovation Event at Perth City Library. We might have a had a vested interest, as our own DG Jodi Cant was one of the keynote speakers, but when you work for one of the most recognised and inspiring leaders of innovation in the WA public sector you’d be mad to miss out on hearing her thoughts, opinions, ideas – and jokes. Jodi had the crowd completely engaged right from her first slow-motion step up to the podium (you had to be there!) as she shared two simple things that agencies and staff need to be innovative: ✅ Permission – It’s our job to think differently, so when you give staff permission to do this, they can do anything. ✅ Culture – When you have buy-in from the top and staff know that their leaders have their back, you create a culture where staff feel safe and trusted to try new things. Other key takeaways from Jodi, fellow keynote speaker Charlie Gunningham (JTSI) and panellists Michelle Crean (Department of Education and @WAPSIN) and Jodie Mead (WAPolice) include: - Challenge people. Challenge your teams. Don’t accept the status quo. - Every little event, step, warm and fuzzy project is another step towards the big change that adds significant value. - Be smarter with less, do better with less. Not do more with less. - Communicate clearly and bring people together who will get things done. - By being in the room, you might be able to affect change by 180* - but sometimes it’s just about being in the room.
