Change practitioners are often looking for the right kind of professional development. It can be such a multi-faceted role at times, and there are offerings out there, but one key pain point has gone under-nourished for way too long. People who work in change work with people and we are often naturally equipped with empathy, compassion, and a desire to make a difference. Change practitioners know that when others are experiencing change they need to feel uplifted and supported. Under the stress of change, people can demonstrate all kinds of behaviours and reactions. Let's follow the famous bell curve for a minute. The apex of the curve is populated by the majority of people who understand change is inevitable and regard it as slightly inconvenient at most. Some people at the front of the curve see change as exciting, like opening a surprise gift, they can't wait to see what's coming next. But on the downhill, there are other stakeholders for whom change provokes more extreme reactions from a controlling response to a sense of hopelessness, inability to think clearly; and even sabotage. When change practitioners find themselves dealing with the tail-enders for prolonged periods of time, the job suddenly scales up in its demands. It can feel like a sprint and a marathon combined, and take great chunks of willpower to maintain equilibrium. The more hierarchical organisational cultures tend to bring out vocal and active tail-enders, so sometimes there's not much support around. Many adverse change responses are so strong because they're driven by fear and misunderstandings. In the worst cases, the egos come out and the street-fighting begins. Too many times we see an excellent, well-functioning and high performing change team become the target of powerful resistors.
