Our Strength and Conditioning professionals Rick Martin and Andrew Pyke will take you through a hands-on, practical session on exercise progressions for adolescents and programming appropriate MAS, speed endurance and agility programming for youths. In his presentation, Andrew answers the following questions: How do I program conditioning for adolescents? MAS is designed for elite athletes or developing athletes in elite academies - What about the rest of the sporting population in high school? Sprinting is normally a 15 min warm up-activation in team sports for adolescents. If I have a tiny amount of time, what type of work do I need to do so athletes get faster? Are drills and a few sprints enough? Agility is a skill that can be taught and learned. But how? How do I progress or regress agility so athletes get outcomes they can apply to their sport?

Last month we welcomed the inaugural 2024 Women in Sport Diploma of Governance cohort 🌟 These 23 remarkable women, all serving on boards of national sporting organisations and national sporting organisations for people with disabilities, are set to enhance their governance capabilities over the next 12 months, led by trainer Annabel Rattigan. An initiative of the Australian Sports Commission, delivered by the Institute of Community Directors Australia, the program aims to support the Australian sport sector by increasing the pool of accredited women board members nationally, creating connections between women in the sector, addressing structural barriers to leadership roles, and promoting governance practices that champion diversity and ethics in our communities. The Diploma of Governance is a highly acclaimed, practical qualification for current and aspiring board directors. For this cohort, we tailored the course syllabus with case studies exploring good (and not so good) examples of national sports governance. We look forward to working with the Commission to advance a fairer, more inclusive sector. When Jack lost his life following the NDIA's sudden change to his support plan, it was supposed to be a wake-up call to our leaders. The disability community had been raising concerns for years about the dangers of removing choice and control from participants, yet Jack’s story was a heartbreaking confirmation of their fears. Now, Kevin—a close friend of Jack’s and another person with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)—is living in fear. For over a year, Kevin has been denied the 1:1 support that would allow him to live safely and independently. Instead of receiving the care he urgently needs, he is being left at risk—just as Jack was. In the face of this systemic neglect, I’ve written another open letter to Minister Bill Shorten, calling for immediate action. The NDIS must return to its core mission: to protect the lives of people with disabilities, not place them in harm’s way. It saddens me deeply to write this again so soon after Jack’s death, but I feel I have no choice. Council Elections? Vote, it matters to sport + it matters for our planet + it matters to all of us. Victorian Council Elections are taking October by storm. Local council elections will take place for every municipality. These councillors will be governing strategy and budgets for their council or shire for a 4 year term. The people we vote into political seats at local, state and federal level develop laws, polices and strategy. If we elect councillors who care, are curious and who are committed to people, place, planet and nature IMAGINE the SHIFT in 4 years we might see in our climate response at a local level. If you’re involved in sport and recreation, early childhood education, out of school hours care and health, Jobs & Skills Australia is keen to hear from you. Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) is currently consulting on its draft recommendations for the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) which will advise the federal government on targeting skilled migration to Australia’s workforce needs. The CSOL draft lists include “confidently on”, “confidently off” and “for further consultation” and are open to stakeholder feedback until 31 May. Roles in sport and recreation, early childhood education, out of school hours care and health are currently included in the draft lists. Apparently, the nation needs an Australian Sports Commission in 2024, because .... well, because sport seems to need a Canberra bureaucracy like every other facet of life in the 21st century. After all, without a #Sports #Commission who would allocate and receive sporting grants, report on those grants to other managers, record and evaluate that data, and then work on allocating and receiving next year's grants? Never mind that Australia's sporting #culture and legacy was established 150 years ago when nobody imagined, in their wildest dreams, that running around and hitting balls would ever need a #managerial class and career paths and financing mechanisms and communications strategies, since we managed, somehow, to build a global #reputation as a nation of #bronzed athletes without any bureaucracy in sport at all. None whatsoever. How did that happen? How did we ever manage to learn to #hop, #skip and #jump without an Australian Sports Commission in Canberra?

Interesting report data: Mental Health Australia's 2023 Report to the Nation shows that those in regional and remote areas feel significantly less confident about meeting monthly living expenses (54 per cent down from 61 per cent in 2022). The latest Suicide Prevention Australia Community Tracker also reveals cost-of-living was also a main cause of elevated distress amongst people reporting suicidal behaviours (58 per cent), as well as from those seeking help from frontline suicide prevention services (54 per cent), and clinical services (64 per cent). Yesterday's data on disability prevalence tells a disappointing story, with increases in severe and profound impairment rates in older age groups from 2018 to 2022 I suspect this is driven by collection method changes as this is the first time an online survey has been offered (or possibly the impact of COVID) as there are similar increases across all age and sex-cohorts. However, it does mean we'll need to be more cautious interpreting the previous downward trend. Another interesting finding is that the extent to which people feel their needs are being met has dropped significantly for the second consecutive survey in a row. Noting that most people in the survey are living in the community it does raise some questions about how well home care is working since the move to individual budgets, and the emphasis on additional investment into home care packages rather than commonwealth home support. I don't draw any definitive conclusions from these results, since the answer to this sort of question can be heavily influenced by changes in expectations. But it should prompt some further investigation of what is going on.
